Low back pain is mostly related to Kidney disease, yet low back pain is not solely caused by Kidney disease. While Kidney disease is indeed often due to Yin deficiency, it can also involve Yang deficiency. In cases of Yang deficiency, the lower back must feel cold as ice; upon exposure to cold, the pain will inevitably worsen, making it impossible to bend forward or extend backward. Consuming cold water, cold rice, and other cooling foods will inevitably cause severe and unrelenting pain. In contrast, in cases of Yin deficiency, although the pain may be severe, there is no intense sensation of freezing cold; drinking iced beverages, cool tea, or eating cold rice does not cause particularly intense pain. Distinguishing between Yin and Yang through these methods is crucial, and the treatment methods differ slightly. I now establish a formula to treat this comprehensively, with minor modifications as needed, which yields miraculous effects. It is named *Jian Yao San* (Strengthen Waist Powder). For Yang deficiency, add one qian of Rou Gui (Cinnamon Twig); for Yin deficiency, add one liang of Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root). Each patient should take according to the prescription, and the illness will be completely cured, typically requiring no more than four doses.
There is another type: patients with Yang-pattern low back pain who are most unaware of its cause. Suddenly, wind-dampness invades the waist, causing severe pain that prevents turning the body sideways. Bending forward or bowing feels as heavy as having a thousand coins tied around the waist. This occurs when Yang energy is excessive and wind-pathogen acts maliciously. The method should be to dispel pathogens and eliminate dampness, after which the illness will recover immediately. Use *Qu Dang Tang* (Dispel Sweeping Decoction): one dose alleviates symptoms, two doses make the illness vanish. This formula purely dispels wind and sweeps away dampness without damaging healthy Qi, thus earning the title of miraculous efficacy. If mistakenly diagnosed as a deficiency pattern and treated with Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) to nourish Yin/water, the dampness, abhorring further dampness, will remain lodged in the lumbar spine and fail to depart, inevitably leading to kyphosis (stooping). If kyphosis has already formed, I have a miraculous formula to gradually restore posture: take one dose daily for three months, and the stooping can be corrected to allow standing. This is the divine formula.

[Latter Formula] (For treating kyphosis)
Yi Ren (Coicis Semen, 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 5 fen), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus, 2 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 5 fen), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
The syndrome of Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder) is caused by contracting summer-heat qi. Because individuals' Yin and Yang have deficiencies and excesses, the symptoms divide accordingly. Generally, although Huoluan is categorized into dry and wet types, they all involve summer-heat pathogen. Therefore, one must distinguish between Yin/Yang and Deficiency/Excess to prescribe medication. In Yang-pattern Huoluan, the abdomen suffers severe pain bordering on death, but the limbs do not undergo opisthotonos (reverse stretching). Symptoms may include vomiting without diarrhea, diarrhea without vomiting, or simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea that cannot be stopped. This differs from Yin-pattern Huoluan, where there is an urge to vomit but inability to do so, and an urge to defecate but inability to do so. The best formula is *Xiang Ru Yin* (Mosla Decoction). However, *Xiang Ru Yin* is often misused by the public who fail to follow correct protocols. I hereby redefine the formula as "Xiang Ru Zhi Yin." Since Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba) is hot in nature, it must be combined with hot herbs and taken cold (like an iced beverage) to align with its nature and achieve efficacy. My prescribed formula differs from those commonly used by others. For anyone suffering from Huoluan during summer, using my decoction ensures immediate relief upon ingestion. For Yin-pattern Huoluan, this formula can also be used, preferably supplemented with 3, 2, or 1 qian of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma). Do not consume it in one gulp; instead, sip it slowly. This allows summer-heat to dissipate naturally and healthy Qi to recover. Whether through vomiting or diarrhea, recovery can be celebrated. If one were to use hot formulas containing Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) or Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) to forcibly purge, although there may be temporary success, the condition will relapse after stabilization, often generating other syndromes. This must not be overlooked.
[Xiang Ru Yin] (Redefined Formula)
Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 1 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba, 5 fen), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus, 1 grain). Decoct in water, let cool to temperature of iced beverage, then take.
