In the moment of sexual intercourse, sudden flaccidity (Yin Wei) and inability to erect occur. Despite trying every method to stimulate arousal, one ultimately fails to summon the courage to engage in coitus. People attribute this to the decline of Mingmen Fire (Fire of the Gate of Life), but who would know that it is actually due to insufficient Heart Qi? Those who can engage in prolonged sexual activity without fatigue do so because Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) is abundant and provides strength. Flaccidity and inability to erect naturally belong to the decline of Mingmen Fire; why is it said to be insufficient Heart Qi? One must understand that when Junhuo (Monarch Fire, i.e., Heart Fire) moves, Xianghuo responds swiftly. If Junhuo is vigorous and Xianghuo does not decline, one can engage in prolonged intercourse without ejaculation. Otherwise, if Junhuo declines first and loses autonomy, Xianghuo will incite from the side. Without a resolute intention in the heart, how can the Pericardium (Baoluo) rouse itself? Therefore, treating flaccidity requires tonifying the Heart above and the Kidney below. Only when both Heart and Kidney are vigorous, followed by tonifying the Ministerial Fire of Mingmen, can flaccidity be cured. The prescription is Qi Yin Tang (Rise Yin Decoction):
Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, 1 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Membranacei Radix, 5 qian), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 1 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, 1 qian), Bai Zi Ren (Platycladi Semen, 1 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After four doses, erection occurs; after another four doses, Yang energy becomes vigorous; after another four doses, prolonged intercourse without defeat is achieved. If taken continuously for three months, one feels like a new person, as if bones have been re-solidified and the body reborn.
This formula greatly tonifies Heart and Kidney Qi. It does not excessively warm Mingmen Fire, yet the fire naturally becomes vigorous. People of the world do not understand that tonifying the Heart generates fire; if Heart Qi declines and fire becomes too strong, it will burn the Heart. They do not understand that tonifying the Kidney generates fire; if Kidney Water is depleted and fire becomes too strong, it will damage the Kidney. If the Heart burns and the Kidney is damaged, what benefit is there in strong fire? When Yin Blood is eventually dried up, Yang will prevail and Yin will diminish, leading to an incurable state.
For this syndrome, Ji Yang Wan (Relieve Yang Pill) is also excellent.
Ren Shen (6 liang), Huang Qi (0.5 jin), Lu Rong (one piece, soaked in wine, sliced, cut into small pieces, stir-fried with rice flour), Gui Gao (Testudinis Carapacis et Plastratis Colla, 0.5 jin), Ren Bao (one piece, roasted dry), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 4 liang), Bei Wu Wei (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 1 liang), Chao Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 3 liang), Yuan Zhi (2 liang), Ba Ji Tian (0.5 jin), Rou Gui (3 liang), Bai Zhu (8 liang), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, 1 jin), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 5 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 8 qian), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, 1 liang).
Grind each herb into powder, form pills with honey. Take 5 qian daily with plain boiled water. After one month, erection occurs, and sexual prowess improves.
Some individuals have thin and cold semen. Although they can engage in intercourse, they fail midway or ejaculate immediately upon approach. People attribute this to Mingmen Fire decline, but who knows it is actually due to weak Spleen and Stomach Yang? The Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth, and Earth is born from Fire. Weak Spleen and Stomach Yang ultimately stems from Mingmen Fire decline. Mingmen Fire is the congenital fire, while Spleen and Stomach Earth is the acquired Earth. Acquired Earth originates from congenital fire; if congenital fire is weak, acquired Earth cannot generate. However, although Spleen and Stomach Earth is acquired, it contains congenital Qi. If Mingmen Fire is cold, how can the congenital Qi within the Spleen and Stomach arise? Since Mingmen cannot generate the congenital Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, the acquired Qi of the Spleen and Stomach becomes increasingly weak. How can it be strong enough to secure essence and make it thick rather than thin? The treatment must tonify the congenital Mingmen Fire and simultaneously tonify the acquired Spleen and Stomach Earth. When Earth Qi is strong and fire does not decline, warmth and thick essence can be achieved. The prescription is Huo Tu Ji Ji Dan (Fire-Earth Mutual Completion Elixir):
Ren Shen (1 liang), Bai Zhu (1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (1 liang), Tu Si Zi (1 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Ba Ji Tian (1 liang), Rou Gui (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After ten doses, semen becomes thick; after another ten doses, semen becomes warm; after three months of continued use, weakness never returns.
This formula strengthens Spleen and Stomach Earth, which still relies on tonifying Mingmen Fire. Dampness removal purifies essence; cold removal warms essence. With cold-dampness eliminated and vital Qi preserved, Yang energy becomes vigorous, preventing timidity and weakness.
For this syndrome, Wang Tu Dan (Strengthen Earth Pill) is also very good.
Ren Shen (6 liang), Bai Zhu, Huang Qi (each 1 jin), Ba Ji Tian (1 jin), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 liang), Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus, 0.5 jin), Tu Si Zi (8 liang), Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen, 2 liang), Bei Wu Wei (1 liang), Rou Gui (3 liang), Po Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus, 4 liang), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 8 liang), Shan Yao (8 liang), Qian Shi (Euryales Semen, 8 liang), Shen Qu (3 liang). Grind into powder, form pills with honey. Take 5 qian daily with plain boiled water. After one month, sexual function improves, and semen is no longer thin or cold.
Some young people suffer from depression and frustration due to unfulfilled desires, leading to impotence and weak erections. People attribute this to Mingmen Fire decline, but who knows it is due to obstruction of Heart Fire? The Kidney is the official of strength, producing skill and storing essence and Zhi (Will). Unfulfilled Zhi leads to stagnant Yang Qi. Yang Qi is the True Fire within the Kidney. This True Fire obeys the command of the Heart; when Heart Fire moves, Kidney Fire responds. If Heart Fire is depressed and obstructed, Kidney Fire, though potentially vigorous, cannot respond, appearing weak when it is not truly weak. Treatment should not boost Mingmen Fire directly; doing so would cause fire to flare at the lower jiao while stagnant Qi remains unvented, leading to Yang excess and Yin depletion, potentially causing abscesses and ulcers that are incurable. Instead, one should vent the depression in the heart, allowing Zhi to relax and Yang Qi to open, thereby curing impotence immediately. The prescription is Xuan Zhi Tang (Vent Will Decoction):
Fu Ling (5 qian), Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Bai Zhu (3 qian), Sheng Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 5 qian), Yuan Zhi (1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Ren Shen (1 qian), Shan Yao (5 qian), Ba Ji Tian (3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, heart-mind relaxes; after another two doses, erection occurs. No need for many doses.
The root cause of this disease is fire obstruction stifling Qi, not fire cold extinguishing embers. Thus, lifting fire immediately cures impotence.
For this syndrome, Qi Yang Yu Xin Dan (Raise Yang and Entertain Heart Mind Pill) is excellent.
Ren Shen (2 liang), Yuan Zhi (4 liang), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood, 5 liang), Chang Pu (1 liang), Gan Cao, Ju Hong, Sha Ren, Chai Hu (each 1 liang), Tu Si Zi, Bai Zhu (each 8 liang), Sheng Zao Ren, Dang Gui (each 4 liang), Bai Shao, Shan Yao (each 6 liang), Shen Qu (3 liang). Grind into powder, form pills with honey. Take 5 qian daily with plain boiled water. After one month, Yang obstruction resolves.
Some individuals have the weakest constitution, feeling cold without wind and chilly before autumn. Even in severe winter snow, wearing heavy fur does not warm them. Upon sexual contact, after a few thrusts, they ejaculate prematurely. This indicates extremely weak Mingmen Fire. Although Mingmen is congenital fire, its acquired functions can be heavily cultivated. Mingmen resides in the Kidney and is formless fire. Formless fire should be guided by water, whereas formed fire is guided by fire. Guiding fire with fire makes fire less vigorous; guiding fire with water prevents fire from declining. Thus, tonifying Mingmen Fire differs significantly from tonifying other fires. The prescription is Fu Ming Sheng Huo Dan (Support Life Generate Fire Elixir):
Ren Shen (6 liang), Ba Ji Tian (1 jin), Shan Zhu Yu (1 jin), Shu Di Huang (2 jin), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 2 pieces), Rou Gui (6 liang), Huang Qi (2 jin), Lu Rong (2 pieces), Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, vinegar-processed, 1 liang), Sheng Zao Ren (3 liang), Bai Zhu (1 jin), Bei Wu Wei (4 liang), Rou Cong Rong (Cistanches Herba, 8 liang), Du Zhong (6 liang). Grind into fine powder, form pills with honey. Take 5 qian morning and evening. After three months, hardness and endurance are natural.
This formula fills essence by supplementing water to tonify fire. Why add Qi-tonifying herbs? Because Qi must be strong for essence to generate. If only fire is tonified without Qi, the rootless fire only brings fleeting pleasure, not lasting joy. Only when Qi is strong is essence abundant; when essence is abundant, fire has roots and generates endlessly. Moreover, Qi is formless; using formless Qi to tonify formless fire is most appropriate, facilitating easy generation of essence and growth of fire.
For this syndrome, Zhuang Huo Dan (Strengthen Fire Pill) is also very good.
Ren Shen (5 liang), Ba Ji Tian (8 liang), Bai Zhu (stir-fried), Shu Di Huang (each 1 jin), Shan Zhu Yu (8 liang), Rou Cong Rong, Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, each 8 liang), Fu Zi (one piece, soaked in decoction of 3 qian Gan Cao, sliced, stir-fried cooked), Rou Gui (3 liang), Po Gu Zhi (stir-fried), Fu Ling (each 4 liang), Bei Wu Wei (1 liang), Chao Zao Ren (3 liang), Bai Zi Ren (2 liang), Shan Yao, Qian Shi (each 5 liang), Long Gu (vinegar-processed, powdered, 1 liang). Grind into powder, form pills with honey. Take for two months; hardness and endurance are achieved.
Middle-aged individuals may experience impotence where even manual stimulation yields no change, or if erection occurs, it quickly fades. This is due to significant decline of Pericardium Fire. Pericardium Fire is Ministerial Fire. When Pericardium Fire is strong, it assists the Monarch (Heart); if weak, even if Heart Fire moves, it is like a sick minister, breathless and unable to serve diligently. Furthermore, Pericardium Fire communicates directly with Mingmen Fire; it is unheard of for Pericardium to be cold while Mingmen is hot. Thus, slight support is needed for weak Pericardium Fire. Treatment should warm the Pericardium, not necessarily Mingmen. The prescription is:
Ren Shen (1 liang), Ba Ji Tian (1 liang), Rou Gui (3 qian), Chao Zao Ren (5 qian), Yuan Zhi (2 qian), Fu Shen (1 qian), Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, 1 qian), Fu Zi (1 qian), Bai Zi Ren (2 qian), Huang Qi (5 qian), Dang Gui (3 qian), Tu Si Zi (2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After ten doses, interest arises spontaneously; after twenty doses, Yang stands firm.
This formula, named Jiu Xiang Tang (Save Minister Decoction), specifically treats Pericardium deficiency-cold, not just promoting erection. Although it treats the Pericardium, it essentially governs the Heart. Tonifying the Heart Monarch enriches the ruler, strengthening the minister to assist in governance.
For this syndrome, Fu Xiang Zhen Yang Wan (Assist Minister Raise Yang Pill) is also good.
Ren Shen (5 liang), Ba Ji Tian (10 liang), Chao Zao Ren, Mai Dong (each 5 liang), Tu Si Zi (10 liang), Yuan Zhi, Bai Zi Ren, Rou Gui (each 2 liang), Fu Shen, Gou Qi Zi (each 3 liang), Huang Qi (8 liang), Dang Gui, Xian Mao (Curculiginis Rhizoma, each 4 liang), Bai Zhu (6 liang), Ren Bao (one piece), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 qian), Yang Qi Shi (Activating Stone, calcined, vinegar-processed, 1 liang). Grind into powder, form pills with honey. Take 4 qian morning and evening with boiling water. After three months, sexual function revives.
