For any woman who is pregnant, it is advisable to maintain a slightly cool state and avoid being too warm. Neither the heated kang (brick bed with flue) of the North nor the heated box of the South is suitable for sleeping. In cases of threatened miscarriage or fetal restlessness, deficiency patterns account for only two or three parts, while heat patterns account for eight or nine parts; one must be extremely cautious.
Ten days or half a month after conception, the pulse is subtle and difficult to distinguish. Before a full month has passed, the woman herself may not even be aware. If she feels unwell and the physician is unaware, mistakenly administering abortifacient drugs can cause significant harm. Ancient sages said that people know that miscarriage often occurs in the second or third month, but few realize how many women suffer fetal injury within the first month.
After conception, one must avoid fright and shock. One should strictly avoid dangerous situations, watching Nuo spirit rituals, or entering temples to see strange images of ghosts and deities. This ensures the Liver can nourish the Hun (Ethereal Soul), preventing the seeds of fetal toxicity or fetal惊 (fetal fright).
From the third or fourth month after conception, the abdomen should be bound tightly to prevent excessive fetal movement, which facilitates easier delivery. However, it must not be bound too tightly, lest it hinder the fetus's normal growth. By the sixth, seventh, eighth, or ninth months, if the fetus suddenly moves restlessly, with pain coming and going over two or three days, accompanied by fluid discharge but without severe lower back pain, this is called "turning the fetus" (transverse lie or malposition where the fetus has not yet engaged). The mother should keep her body straight when sitting, lying, walking, or standing, avoiding panic and distress. Regarding the timing of labor, lower back pain is the key indicator. As the ancients said, "contractions connecting to the waist mean the fetus will immediately detach," referring to the urgency of lower back pain occurring in waves.
Ordinary people enjoy good health and abundant Qi and Blood due to harmonious Spleen and Stomach function and regulated diet. For pregnant women, the Spleen and Stomach are particularly crucial. The fetal origin relies entirely on Qi and Blood for nourishment, and Qi and Blood are generated through the Spleen and Stomach's digestion of food. If dietary habits are irregular, the Spleen and Stomach will inevitably be depleted. Coupled with emotional injuries, Qi and Blood will gradually diminish, leading to rampant Phlegm-Fire and diseases such as morning sickness (Em Zu) and convulsions. Therefore, a skilled physician, upon seeing disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach in a pregnant woman, will prioritize regulating them. Even if other symptoms exist, they are treated as secondary. However, during the second to third months and the sixth to seventh months of pregnancy, appetite may decline. It is acceptable to consume small amounts of palatable foods to support Stomach Qi. New rice, new flour, and sticky or hard-to-digest foods severely damage the fetal origin and must be strictly avoided. One should not eat until completely full at one meal; if one intends to eat ten portions worth, only eat six or seven portions. Eating frequent small meals is the essential method for regulating the Spleen and Stomach.
