The creation of humans by Heaven and Earth has been no different from ancient times to the present. People in ancient times often lived long lives, while people today often die young. Is this solely due to differences in moral conduct and behavior? Ancient sayings state: "Among all evils, lust is the foremost." And also: "I do not defile another's wife, so others do not defile my daughter." The warning against illicit sexual desires is known to all. However, between husband and wife lies the great ethical bond, what is called proper sexual conduct. Yet, excessive indulgence leads to disease and death. This is largely due to ignorance of how to seek auspiciousness and avoid danger, secretly violating taboos. Light violations bring disaster; heavy ones shorten life. One must be extremely cautious. The *Yangsheng Lu* (Record of Nourishing Life), *Baoming Jue* (Secrets for Preserving Life), and dates of taboos are appended below.
If a boy engages in intercourse before his essence is sufficient (his physical body is not fully developed, he will inevitably suffer from obscure diseases.) If a woman engages in intercourse shortly after her first menstruation (her yin qi leaks prematurely, leading to early death.) If a man suffering from impotence forcibly takes cinnabar and sulfur pills (depletes kidney water, leading to sudden exhaustion or death.) If one forces sexual activity while fatigued (results in nocturnal emission, turbid urine, impotence, and lower back pain.) If one engages in intercourse while exhausted from travel by boat or cart (leads to the five labors and deficiency injuries.) If one engages in intercourse immediately after strenuous labor (frequent intercourse leads to acute illness and death.) If one engages in intercourse with red eyes (leads to internal miasma.) If one engages in intercourse when drunk and full (causes repeated damage to the five zang organs.) If one engages in intercourse while angry (causes stagnation of essence and blood.) If one engages in intercourse while fearful (causes imbalance and deficiency of yin and yang.) If a woman engages in intercourse before her menstrual period has completely ceased (leads to metrorrhagia/hemorrhage.) If a man holds his urine during intercourse (leads to stranguria/dysuria.) If one bathes immediately after intercourse (prone to various illnesses.) On the days of Si Li (Four Separations), Si Jue (Four Extinctions), Si Li (Four Beginnings), Er Fen (Two Equinoxes), and Er Zhi (Two Solstices), sexual abstinence is especially required.
