[Song Verse]
Determine the position of Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler) on the upper part of the middle finger; determine the position of Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler) at the root crease of the middle finger. Proceed sequentially to the index finger for the first and second positions, and extend to the fourth and fifth positions on the ring and little fingers for further deduction. Si Tian corresponds to the position of the Third Qi (San Qi), while Zai Quan naturally corresponds to the position of the Sixth Qi (Liu Qi). The Host Qi (Zhu Qi) follows the sequence of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, whereas the Guest Qi (Ke Qi) varies according to the order of Yin and Yang (One, Two, Three).
[Annotation]
With the left palm facing upward, use the tip of the middle finger to mark the position of Si Tian, and the root crease of the middle finger to mark the position of Zai Quan. Moving sequentially along the index finger, the third joint crease marks the position of the First Qi (Chu Zhi Qi), and the first joint crease marks the position of the Second Qi (Er Zhi Qi). The tip of the middle finger marks the position of the Third Qi, which is also the position of Si Tian. The first joint crease of the ring finger marks the position of the Fourth Qi (Si Zhi Qi), and the second joint crease marks the position of the Fifth Qi (Wu Zhi Qi). The root crease of the middle finger marks the position of the Sixth Qi, which is the position of Zai Quan. The designation of Host Qi by Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water refers to the five stages formed by the sequential distribution of the Five Elements. Thus, the First Qi is Jueyin Wind-Wood; the Second Qi is Shaoyin Ministerial-Fire; the Third Qi is Shaoyang Ministerial-Fire; the Fourth Qi is Taiyin Damp-Earth; the Fifth Qi is Yangming Dry-Metal; and the Sixth Qi is Taiyang Cold-Water. This represents the unchanging order of mutual generation: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood again. The designation of Guest Qi by "One, Two, Three" refers to the superposition of the Six Qi of Three Yin and Three Yang. Therefore, Jueyin is called One Yin, Shaoyin is Two Yin, and Taiyin is Three Yin; Shaoyang is One Yang, Yangming is Two Yang, and Taiyang is Three Yang. This reflects the principle that One generates Two, Two generates Three, and Three returns to One; when Yin reaches its extreme, it generates Yang, and when Yang reaches its extreme, it generates Yin. This sequence of the six steps of Qi ascent and descent is arranged annually in this manner. By using this method for positioning, both Host Qi and Guest Qi become clear within the palm.
[Song Verse]
Tian Fu (Heavenly符) occurs when the Central Yun (Middle Transport) shares the same Qi as Si Tian. Sui Hui (Year Meeting) occurs when the Central Yun occupies its corresponding Earthly Branch position. Both the Four Cardinal Directions (Si Zheng) and the Four Intercardinal Directions (Si Wei) are Sui Hui years. Tai Yi Tian Fu (Supreme Heavenly符) occurs when Tian Fu and Sui Hui coincide. Tong Tian Fu (Same Heaven符) and Tong Sui Hui (Same Year Meeting) occur when the Zai Quan Qi (Earthly Ruler Qi) is identical to the Central Yun Qi. Yin years are named Tong Sui Hui, while Yang years are named Tong Tian Fu, from which one can understand the distinction.
[Annotation]
Tian Fu refers to a year where the Central Yun Qi is identical to the Si Tian Qi. For example: Wood Yun with Wood Si Tian, such as Ding Si and Ding Hai years; Fire Yun with Fire Si Tian, such as Wu Zi, Wu Wu, Wu Yin, and Wu Shen years; Earth Yun with Earth Si Tian, such as Ji Chou and Ji Wei years; Metal Yun with Metal Si Tian, such as Yi Mao and Yi You years; Water Yun with Water Si Tian, such as Bing Chen and Bing Xu years. These total twelve years.
Sui Hui refers to a year where the Central Yun Qi coincides with its corresponding Earthly Branch position. For example: Wood Yun over Mao, i.e., Ding Mao year; Fire Yun over Wu, i.e., Wu Wu year; Metal Yun over You, i.e., Yi You year; Water Yun over Zi, i.e., Bing Zi year. These constitute the Four Cardinal Directions. Earth Yun over the four seasons' final months (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei), i.e., Jia Chen, Jia Xu, Ji Chou, and Ji Wei years. These constitute the Four Intercardinal Directions. These total eight years.
Tai Yi Tian Fu refers to a year that is both a Tian Fu year and a Sui Hui year, meaning the Heavenly Qi, Yun Qi, and Earthly Branch all converge. For example: In Ji Chou and Ji Wei years, the Central Yun is Earth, sharing the same Qi as the Earth Si Tian, and Earth Yun resides over Chou and Wei. In Yi You year, the Central Yun is Metal, sharing the same Qi as the Metal Si Tian, and Metal Yun resides over You. In Wu Wu year, the Central Yun is Fire, sharing the same Qi as the Fire Si Tian, and Fire Yun resides over Wu. These total four years.
Tong Tian Fu and Tong Sui Hui refer to years where the Zai Quan Qi is identical to the Central Yun Qi. Yang years are named Tong Tian Fu; for example: Wood Yun with Wood Zai Quan, such as Ren Yin and Ren Shen years; Earth Yun with Earth Zai Quan, such as Jia Chen and Jia Xu years; Metal Yun with Metal Zai Quan, such as Geng Zi and Geng Wu years. Yin years are named Tong Sui Hui; for example: Water Yun with Water Zai Quan, such as Xin Chou and Xin Wei years; Fire Yun with Fire Zai Quan, such as Gui Mao, Gui You, Gui Si, and Gui Hai years. These total twelve years.
These variations in Qi and Yun convergence must be known. In summary: there are twelve Tian Fu years, four Tai Yi Tian Fu years, eight Sui Hui years, six Tong Tian Fu years, and six Tong Sui Hui years. However, the four Tai Yi Tian Fu years are already included within the twelve Tian Fu years. Among the eight Sui Hui years, four are also included within the Tian Fu years. Taken together, out of sixty years, only twenty-eight years fall into these specific categories.
