Treating chronic dysentery.
Xianglian Wan added with He Zi (Chebula Fruit), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), and Wu Mei (Mume Fruit).
Xianglian Wan treats red and white dysentery; it uses Zhuyu-coated Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Muxiang (Costus Root). Treating dysentery requires bitter, acrid, and cold herbs; Li Jiang's formula captures this principle accurately. (Liu Wansu, *Suwen Xuanji Yuanbing Shi* annotation: Dysentery is suitable for purging, while chronic dysentery is suitable for astringing. Huanglian is bitter and drying, capable of thickening the stomach and intestines and astringing the bowels. If dysentery has just begun, its use is contraindicated. Jin's annotation: This comment needs revision. The preceding eight characters are Wang Jun's original self-annotation, which is very correct, very correct. The claim that Huanglian thickens the gastrointestinal tract is erroneous according to the *Shennong Bencao Jing* and should not be followed. It can be used if damp-heat is abundant in the stomach at the onset of dysentery, but it is contraindicated if the middle jiao is deficient after prolonged dysentery.) Adding Binglang (Areca Seed) and Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), named Zhili Sishen Wan (Four Divine Pills for Treating Dysentery), pushing out the old and eliminating filth without fear.

Xiao Xianxiong Tang (Minor Chest-Piercing Decoction) drains phlegm-heat, composed of Huanglian, Banxia, and Gualou. (Cheng Yingmao, *Shanghan Lun Hou Tiaobian* states: "Huanglian clears heat, Banxia guides fluid retention, Gualou moistens dryness; combined they open stuck qi. Also called 'Xianxiong' [Piercing the Chest], although the attack is not severe, it directly drains excess in the chest, so the pathogen also...")

Treating abdominal distension and fullness after sweating.
Houpo (Magnolia Bark) (roasted) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (each eight liang, sliced) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (half sheng, washed) Gancao (Licorice Root) (two liang, roasted) Renshen (Ginseng Root) (one liang). One dou of water, decoct to obtain three sheng.
Houpo Jiangxia Caoren Renshen Tang (Magnolia Bark, Fresh Ginger, Pinellia, Licorice, and Ginseng Decoction) regulates qi, harmonizes the middle, and combines tonification with purgation. After sweating, deficiency pathogens cause abdominal distension; this formula is excellent for tonifying deficiency and draining fullness. (After sweating, the pathogenic qi has already...)
