Treats Taiyang disease (Exterior syndrome of the Taiyang channel) after five or six days, presenting with vomiting and fever. This indicates that the Shaoyang syndrome (Shao Yang pattern) is fully present. If a physician mistakenly applies purgation (downward-draining method), and the Shao Yang pattern persists, yet the patient experiences epigastric fullness without pain, this is termed "Pi" (Glomus/Stagnation). In this case, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is contraindicated; instead, Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang (Pinellia Decoction to Drain the Epigastrium) should be used.
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, half sheng, washed) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, one liang) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, three liang each) Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, twelve pieces) Water ten dou.
Treats post-sweating phase of Taiyang disease where Stomach Qi is disharmonious, resulting in epigastric glomus hardness, dry retching, fetid eructation (smell of food decay), fluid retention under the hypochondrium, borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), and diarrhea.
Treats Taiyang disease or Wind-stroke where, following mistaken purgation, the patient suffers from frequent diarrhea (dozens of times daily) with undigested food, borborygmus, epigastric glomus hardness and fullness, dry retching, and mental restlessness. The physician, seeing the epigastric glomus, assumes pathogenic factors remain and applies purgation again, worsening the glomus. This is not heat accumulation but rather deficiency of Stomach Qi causing hardness. Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang should be used, removing Ren Shen and Gan Cao, increasing the dosage by one liang, while other ingredients follow the previous method.
Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang consists of Huang Lian, Huang Qin, Gan Jiang, Gan Cao, Da Zao, and Ren Shen. ("Xie Xin" literally means draining the Heart, but actually refers to draining the Stomach, as the Stomach is located below the heart region. The "epigastric glomus" is caused by rebellious Stomach Qi rising upward; thus, Sheng Jiang (Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma) is used to descend rebellious Qi and stop vomiting, and Gan Cao is heavily used to moderate urgency and tonify.)
Treats Taiyang disease where the patient originally had chronic cold-type diarrhea. If the physician mistakenly applies emesis or purgation, it leads to Cold-Heat Gridlock (Han Ge), where food is vomited immediately upon entering the mouth.
Gan Jiang (Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma) Huang Lian Huang Qin Ren Shen (three liang each) Water six sheng, decocted to obtain two sheng of liquid. Remove dregs, divide into two warm doses.
Jiang Lian Qin Shen Tang treats vomiting. The principle that bitter flavor overcomes the Heart requires analysis. (This is not a method for harmonizing cold and heat, but a formula for treating Cold-Heat Gridlock where heat rebels upward.) When Cold-Heat gridlock occurs... [Text fragmentary] ...therefore, in such cases, purely acrid-hot herbs may be suitable to unblock Yang and scatter cold, or bitter-cold herbs to descend rebellion and clear heat, depending on the specific pathology.
