Tongue: The tongue is the external manifestation of the Heart (Xin). Its central color is yellow, internally connecting to the Spleen (Pi), and opening into the mouth; therefore, pathological changes often manifest at the root of the tongue. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (Zu Shao Yin Shen Jing) passes through the kidney and connects to the root of the tongue. The Heart governs the tongue, with its external orifice being the tongue. In years characterized by the ascending fire phase (Sheng Ming Zhi Ji), the tongue is the primary organ. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian (Zu Tai Yin Pi Jing) connects to the root of the tongue and spreads beneath it. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian flanks the root of the tongue. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian penetrates the middle of the tongue. The straight branch of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian ties to the root of the tongue, and the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian also penetrates below the tongue. The marked points (Biao) of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian are located at [missing character in original text, typically referring to Back-Shu points] and the two vessels under the tongue. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian ascends and ties to the tongue. The divergent vessel of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian (Shou Shao Yin Xin Jing) ties to the root of the tongue. The sinew branch of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian (Shou Shao Yang San Jiao Jing) enters and ties to the root of the tongue. The sinew branch of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian separates and knots at the root of the tongue. The Upper Jiao (Shang Jiao) qi ascends to the tongue. The Jueyin Meridian is the Liver Meridian (Gan Mai); the Liver governs sinews, which gather at the genitalia and network to the root of the tongue. Turbid qi from the stomach travels to the lips and tongue to produce taste. Heart Qi communicates with the tongue; when Heart Qi is harmonious, the tongue can discern the five flavors.
Teeth and Gums: The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Shou Yangming Da Chang Jing) enters the lower teeth. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian (Zu Yangming Wei Jing) descends along the lateral side of the nose and enters the upper teeth. The divergent vessel of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian covers all teeth. The sinew branch of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian ascends to the vicinity of the Jiache acupoint (Jiache, ST6). The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian follows the mandible (Yache). The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Zu Tai Yang Pang Guang Jing) has a branch entering the teeth, named Jiaosun; for caries of the upper teeth, this point should be selected. Teeth are the surplus of bone essence.
Mouth: The central color is yellow, internally connecting to the Spleen, and opening into the mouth. The Spleen governs the mouth, with its external orifice being the mouth. In years characterized by the earth phase (Bei Hua Zhi Ji), the mouth is the primary organ. The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian flanks the mouth. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian ascends and flanks the mouth. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian emerges from the mouth. Spleen Qi communicates with the mouth; when Spleen Qi is harmonious, the mouth can discern the flavors of the five grains. The Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) networks the lips and mouth.
Lips: The Spleen combines with muscles, and its luster manifests in the lips. The Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Sanjiao, and Bladder are the foundation of the granary; their luster manifests in the four white areas around the lips. The Du Mai (Conception Vessel of the back) circles the lips. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian circles the lips. The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian (Zu Jue Yin Gan Jing) circles inside the lips. The lips are the external manifestation of the Spleen. The lips and tongue are the root of the muscles.
Neck and Nape: The divergent vessel of the Du Mai ascends to the nape. The Du Mai returns and branches down to the nape. The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian descends to the nape. The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian follows the nape. The Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian (Shou Tai Yang Xiao Chang Jing) follows the nape. The Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian ascends to the nape. The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian follows behind the throat and ascends into the Hangsang (nasopharynx). The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian ascends from the back muscles and emerges at the nape. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian ties to the root of the tongue and re-emerges at the nape. The divergent vessel of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian ascends to the head and nape. The sinew of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian flanks the spine and ascends to the vertex. The sinew branch of the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian follows the neck, emerging anterior to the Foot-Taiyang Meridian. The straight branch of the sinew of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian ascends from the shoulder to the neck. The central meridian is the Du Mai. The ascending branch of the Chong Mai emerges from the Hangsang. The essence of muscles forms the constraints (eyelids/ligaments), wrapping the essence of sinews, bones, blood, and qi, connecting posteriorly to emerge at the nape.
Yu Chang (Yu Shi) stated: "If one does not understand the Twelve Meridians, any manual intervention will be erroneous. How much more so for the throat and pharynx, which are the pivotal gates of the body; thus, clarity regarding them is essential." Herein, the meridians related to the throat, pharynx, teeth, lips, nape, neck, mouth, and tongue, as collected in *Lei Jing* (Classified Classic), are appended above for reference, so that during clinical practice, one may avoid confusion and helplessness.
