Dental Abscess (see also) Also known as dental gangrene. At the initial stage of wind-pathogen invasion, small nodules appear on the gingival tissue, located either superiorly or inferiorly, internally or externally. The lesions are elevated and hard; apply oral gangrene powder via insufflation.
Penetrating Dental Carbuncle / Penetrating Dental Toxin Two days prior to onset, toothache is accompanied by chills and fever, followed by intensified pain. A purple nodule appears on the gingiva, with the surrounding gingival tissue turning dark purple or black. This condition is termed "Penetrating Dental Carbuncle/Toxin." If ulcerated, it is called "Penetrating Dental Toxin"; cases with red coloration are treatable, while those with cyanotic or black discoloration are intractable. Apply *Jindan* combined with *Bidan* via insufflation, and administer internal decoctions for cooling blood, clearing heat, and detoxifying. For ulcerated cases, adding *Niuhuang* (Calculus Bovis) to the oral gangrene powder yields excellent results.
Gingival Recession (Yaxuan) Itching gums with bleeding from all teeth, reddened gingival tissue, and bleeding from interdental spaces with a sour taste indicate excess fire attacking upward. Use *Qingwei San* (Stomach-Clearing Powder) supplemented with *Cebaiye* (Platycladi Cacumen). If pale blood oozes continuously, it indicates deficiency-fire stirring due to stomach deficiency; use formulas that dispel wind, clear heat, nourish yin, and cool blood. Externally apply *Zhenzhu San* (Pearl Powder). Formula: *Haipiaoxiao* (Sepiae Endoconcha) 1 qian, *Longgu* (Fossilized Bones) 2 qian, *Zhenzhu* (Margarita) 3 li, *Chensha* (Cinnabar), *Xiangpi* (Elephant Skin), *Ruxiang* (Boswelliae Resina), *Moyao* (Myrrhae Resina), and *Bingpian* (Borneolum Syntheticum) each 5 fen. Grind into fine powder. Take a cotton ball size of a finger, moisten with water, dip in powder, wipe the affected area, and press firmly with a finger one or two times until healed. If gum itching occurs, it is due to blood deficiency; add *Baizhi* (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) to blood-nourishing formulas. For persistent gingival recession, burn silk floss to ash (preserving its nature), mix with a small amount of *Bingpeng San*, and apply to the site for immediate effect. For bleeding from all teeth, grind *Gouqi* (Lycii Fructus) into powder, decoct in water for rinsing, then swallow for immediate hemostasis.
Interdental Swelling Inability to masticate indicates deficiency of primordial qi. Selectively use *Buzhong Yiqi Tang* (Decoction for Boosting the Middle and Augmenting Qi) or *Shiquan Dabu Tang* (Decoction for Perfect Great Tonification).
Teeth Yellow as Gold Burn rice husk from glutinous rice to ash and rub onto teeth to make them white as jade.
Gums Exuding Foul Sweat Accumulation of wind-heat in the Yangming channel. Use 15 *Taoren* (Persicae Semen), *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 qian, *Mangxiao* (Natrii Sulfas) 1 qian, and *Zhigancao* (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, *Dahuang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally.
Infant's Horse Teeth White, brittle-bone-like structures on the gums indicate impending eruption of this toxin, often accompanied by sneezing. Puncture daily with a needle and frequently insufflate oral gangrene powder for spontaneous recovery.
Wind-Fire Toothache Mix small amounts of *Qingfen* (Calomelas) and garlic, grind into a paste. Males press the left hand, females press the right hand at the Cun and Guan pulse positions, and bind tightly with blue cloth for immediate relief. Small blisters may form but are harmless.
Dental Caries Bite a grain-sized piece of *Wulingzhi* (Trogopterori Faeces) on the painful spot. After a moment, rinse with warm water; parasites may be visible. Combine equal parts of *Xionghuang* (Realgar), *Chuanjiao* (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), and *Binglang* (Arecae Semen). Add small amounts of *Zhenchansu* (Bufo Venenum) and *Shexiang* (Moschus). Form pills with jujube pulp and insert into carious cavities. Parasites dissolve into fluid, and pain stops immediately (a variant without Binglang is also highly effective).
Marrow Overflow Rare Disease Teeth gradually elongate daily, making eating difficult. This is called "Marow Overflow." Use only *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), decoct in water, rinse the mouth, and swallow. Source: *Xia Zi Yi Qiji Fang* (Formulas for Rare Diseases by Xia Zi Yi).
