(For the explanation of the song, refer to *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.) It is used to treat women with difficult or obstructed menstruation.
Hirudo (Leech), Ophiorrhiza (Mebugong), Prunus persica seed (Taoren), Rheum palmatum rhizome (Dahuang)
Nan Yuanxi notes: For women with difficult menstruation, if both the pulse and symptoms indicate excess patterns, this formula is appropriate; otherwise, one should nourish the source of the Chong and Ren meridians and must not use purgative methods.
It is used to treat women with amenorrhea, persistent firm masses in the viscera, presence of dried blood (old blood stasis), and leukorrhea (white vaginal discharge).
Alumen (Fanshi, 3 fen, calcined), Apricot seed (Xingren, 1 fen)
Powder the above two ingredients. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of a jujube pit. Take four pills per dose; for severe cases, take another dose.
The song states: Menstrual stagnation forms masses that are hard and fixed; the frequent flow of white discharge is not accidental. (When accumulation and discharge are irregular, dampness arises in the uterus; dampness transforms into heat, corrupting accumulated blood, leading to the spontaneous discharge of white matter.) Use three fen of Alumen and one fen of Apricot seed. Upon administration, the disease resolves without lingering.
You Zaijing comments: "Persistent firm masses in the viscera" refers to dried blood in the uterus solidifying into masses that do not resolve. If dried blood does not resolve, new blood cannot nourish, resulting in amenorrhea and irregular menstruation. Consequently, accumulation and discharge become irregular, dampness arises in the uterus, and dampness transforms into heat. The accumulated blood becomes corrupted by damp-heat, forming white discharge that flows spontaneously. In such cases, one should first eliminate the damp-heat in the uterus. Alumen drains water and clears heat, combined with Apricot seed to break stagnation and moisten dried blood.
It is used to treat women affected by sixty-two types of wind pathogens, suffering from stabbing pain in the abdomen due to qi and blood stagnation.
Carthamus tinctorius flower (Honglanhua, 1 liang)
Take one ingredient. Decoct in one sheng of wine until reduced by half. Drink half at once. If symptoms persist, take another dose.
The song states: The meaning of sixty-two types of wind is unclear; stabbing abdominal pain causes hesitation. To treat wind, one must first move the blood; decoct one liang of Carthamus in wine and consume it.
The shallow annotation cites Zhang Yinan's *Lushantang Leibian*, which offers excellent insights; further explanation is omitted.
(See the chapter on Diseases of Pregnant Women.) It is used to treat various abdominal pains in women.
Note: Various abdominal pains in women generally stem from qi stagnation, blood coagulation, or leukorrhea. The reason for using Danggui Shaoyao San (Angelica and Paeonia Powder) is that the Liver is the Sea of Blood; thus, one follows its nature to promote smooth flow. In the formula, Angelica enters the Liver to relieve stagnation and soothe Wood energy; Paeonia and Alisma dissipate stasis and promote water metabolism; Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome strengthens Earth to nurture Wood. The brilliance lies in preparing it as a powder to disperse, and taking it with wine to harmonize. This coordinates the herbs to unblock qi and blood, harmonize Ying and Wei nutrients, and follow the flexible nature of Wood, ensuring qi and blood harmony and dispersion of stagnation. How could abdominal pains fail to be resolved?
