That is the previous formula. Divide the three herbs in equal parts, pound and sieve into powder. Soak with juice of *Rehmanniae Radix* (Dihuang, 地黄), mix with steamed bread dough to make pills, size of *Cotini Fructus* (Wutongzi, 梧桐子). Take ten pills at any time, washed down with rice gruel.
During pregnancy, if there is difficulty in urination but diet remains normal, *Danggui Beimu Kushen Wan* (Angelica, Fritillaria and Sophora Pill) is indicated.
[You] Difficulty in urination with normal diet indicates that the pathogen does not originate from the Middle Jiao. Furthermore, without symptoms such as abdominal fullness and heaviness, it is certainly not due to failure of water metabolism. It can be known that this is blood deficiency with heat stagnation, leading to scanty and astringent body fluids. Materia Medica states: *Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui, 当归) tonifies various deficiencies in women; *Radix Sophorae Flavescentis* (Kushen, 苦参) enters the Yin to benefit orifices and removes latent heat; *Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae* (Beimu, 贝母) treats stagnation and clears the source of fluids.
**Danggui Beimu Kushen Wan Formula** ([Original Note]: For men, add *Talcum* (Huashi, 滑石) half liang. ○ Most annotated versions delete these seven characters; only the Wei version retains them.)
*Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui, 当归), *Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae* (Beimu, 贝母), *Radix Sophorae Flavescentis* (Kushen, 苦参) (each four liang).
Pound the above three herbs into powder, refine honey to make pills, size of *Phaseoli Semen* (Xiaodou, 小豆). Take three pills with water, gradually increasing to ten pills.
*Zhangshi Yitong* states: In cases of difficult urination, it is due to heat stagnation in the Bladder, where qi condenses into dryness. The disease is in the Lower Jiao, hence diet is normal. Use *Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui, 当归) to harmonize blood and moisten dryness; *Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae* (Beimu, 贝母) to clear Lung and open stagnation; *Radix Sophorae Flavescentis* (Kushen, 苦参) to benefit orifices and drive out water, entering the Bladder to remove heat accumulation.
Note: *Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae* (Beimu, 贝母), according to *Shennong Bencao Jing* and Zhen Quan, treats difficult labor. *Waitai Miyao* under the Epilepsy section, after the Ge Gen Tang formula, states: "Beimu facilitates easy delivery." If not near term, substitute with *Rhizoma Cimicifugae* (Shengma, 升麻). Although this claim is unreliable, it shows its efficacy in benefiting orifices. The use of this herb in the present formula likely aims at this property. *Yizong Jinjian* states: The formula and syndrome do not match; there must be missing text. No explanation is given, likely due to lack of investigation into herb properties.
*Shishi Chanjing* lists the indications for Kushen Wan identical to the original text.
*Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui, 当归), *Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae* (Beimu, 贝母), *Radix Sophorae Flavescentis* (Kushen, 苦参) (each three liang); *Talcum* (Huashi, 滑石) (half liang).
Pound into powder, make honey pills size of *Phaseoli Semen*. Take twenty pills with rice drink.
During pregnancy, if there is water retention, body heaviness, difficulty in urination, aversion to cold like wind blowing, and dizziness upon rising, *Kuizi Fuling San* (Abelmoschus and Poria Powder) is indicated.
[Shen] This is caused by the fetus compressing the Wei Qi, leading to impaired water metabolism.
[*Yizong Jinjian*] External water retention causes edema and aversion to cold like wind blowing; excess water stored in skin and muscles causes body heaviness. Internal water retention causes difficulty in urination; excess water obstructs the ascent of Yang Qi, causing dizziness upon rising. Using *Fructus Abelmoschi Esculenti* (Kuizi, 葵子) and *Poria* (Fuling, 茯苓) focuses primarily on benefiting orifices and promoting diuresis.
*Funren Liangfang* states: *Chanbaolun* says: Pregnancy edema results from weak organ qi, exacerbated by pregnancy-induced deficiency. Earth fails to control Water, blood scatters into limbs, causing abdominal distension, edema of hands, feet, and face, and scanty, difficult urination. Chen Wuze states: Women with pre-existing wind-cold-dampness often experience foot swelling during pregnancy, commonly called "wrinkled feet." Some have whole-body edema and urgent abdominal distension, named "fetal water" (*Chaoyuanfang* calls it "Ziman Tizhong").
**Kuizi Fuling San Formula**
*Fructus Abelmoschi Esculenti* (Kuizi, 葵子) (one jin); *Poria* (Fuling, 茯苓) (three liang).
Pound the above two herbs into powder. Take one cun bi with water, three times daily. Recovery occurs when urination becomes smooth.
*Zhangshi Yitong* states: The Bladder stores body fluids and excretes urine through Qi transformation. It extends outward to meridians and upward to the head, serving as the exterior of all Yang meridians. Now, Bladder Qi fails to transform, urine cannot exit, and meridians are not benefited externally. Hence, body heaviness, aversion to cold like wind blowing, and dizziness upon rising. Only by promoting diuresis can water be removed, meridian Qi circulate, and exterior symptoms resolve. *Fructus Abelmoschi Esculenti* (Kuizi, 葵子) enters the Bladder directly to treat urinary retention, assisted by *Poria* (Fuling, 茯苓) to seep water pathways.
*Qianjin Fang*: Formula for treating difficulty in urination during pregnancy. (This is the same formula; *Waitai Miyao* cites *Qianjin Yi Fang*, indications are also identical. *Qianjin Fang* commentary cites the original text.)
*Funren Liangfang*: Kuizi San, treats difficulty in urination during pregnancy, body heaviness, aversion to cold, dizziness upon rising, and edema. Wang Ziheng states: For urinary retention during pregnancy, avoid cold herbs specifically. (Also named Fuling Tang.)
*Fructus Abelmoschi Esculenti* (Kuizi, 葵子) (five liang); *Poria* (Fuling, 茯苓) (three liang).
Pound into powder. Take two qian each time, mixed with rice drink. Recovery occurs when urination becomes smooth.
*Shishi Chanjing* states: If not relieved, suspect "Zhuanbao" (displacement of the bladder), add a small amount of burnt hair, mixed and taken. Very effective. (Use yellow *Fructus Abelmoschi Esculenti*).
*Shenghui Fang*: Kuizi San, treats body edema during pregnancy, difficulty in urination, aversion to cold like wind blowing.
This is the same formula, adding *Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae* (Han Fangji, 汉防己). Total three herbs, each two liang.
For pregnant women, *Danggui San* (Angelica Powder) should be taken regularly. (*Maijing* has six additional characters here: "leads to easy delivery and freedom from illness.")
[You] After pregnancy, damp-heat damaging fetal Qi is most feared. Therefore, within the blood-nourishing formula of Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Shaoyao, Baizhu is used to remove dampness, and Huangqin to clear heat. Danxi calls Huangqin and Baizhu the sacred herbs for calming the fetus. However, Huangqin and Baizhu do not directly calm the fetus; they remove damp-heat, and the fetus naturally stabilizes.
[*Yizong Jinjian*] If there is no disease during pregnancy, medication is unnecessary. If the person is thin and has heat, fearing consumption of blood and damage to the fetus, this formula should be taken regularly to stabilize the fetus.
**Danggui San Formula**
*Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui, 当归), *Radix Scutellariae* (Huangqin, 黄芩), *Radix Paeoniae Alba* (Shaoyao, 芍药), *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (each one jin); *Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae* (Baizhu, 白术) (half jin).
Pound the above five herbs into powder. Take one cun bi with wine, twice daily. Regular intake during pregnancy leads to easy delivery and fetal health. It also treats various postpartum diseases. (Wang's *Yixue Yuanli* includes *Ginseng Radix* (Renshen, 人参)).
Fang's *Danxi Xinfa Fuyu* states: This is a formula for nourishing blood and clearing heat. Thin individuals with blood deficiency and heat, restless fetus, or history of miscarriage, should take it to clear the source and prevent complications.
Wang's *Mingyi Zazhuo* states: Regulating pregnancy lies in clearing heat and nourishing blood. High-quality *Radix Scutellariae* (Huangqin, 黄芩) is the sacred herb for calming the fetus because it clears heat. It is suitable to add in summer months. Nourishing the fetus relies entirely on the Spleen and Stomach, like a bell hanging from a beam; if the beam is soft, the bell falls; if broken, it drops. Thus, *Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae* (Baizhu, 白术) tonifies the Spleen and serves as the sovereign herb for calming the fetus.
*Waitai Miyao* cites *Gujin Luyian*: Shu Tang, treats sudden heart pain wanting death during pregnancy. *Qianjin Fang* treats abdominal fullness and pain during pregnancy, crossing hands over the heart, unable to eat.
This is the same formula, removing *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong, 川芎) and *Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui, 当归). Chop the above three herbs, boil in six sheng of water to obtain two and a half sheng. Divide into three doses. Finish within half a day. Mild diarrhea allows for easier birth.
*Yijian Fang*: Treats amenorrhea for three or four months, or menstruation occurring twice a month.
This is the same formula, adding *Fructus Corni* (Shanzhuyu, 山茱萸).
For nourishing the fetus during pregnancy, *Baizhu San* (Atractylodes Powder) is indicated.
[You] Fetal damage during pregnancy can be due to damp-heat or damp-cold, varying according to the Yin-Yang of individual organ qi. *Danggui San* is the correct formula for damp-heat. *Baizhu San* uses *Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae* (Baizhu, 白术) and *Concha Ostreae* (Muli, 牡蛎) to dry dampness, *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong, 川芎) to warm blood, and *Semen Zanthoxyli* (Shujiao, 蜀椒) to remove cold; thus, it is the correct formula for damp-cold. Zhang Zhongjing lists them together here, deeply instructing future generations.
**Baizhu San Formula** ([Original Note]: See *Waitai*. ○ *Waitai* cites *Gujin Luyian*: Pei Fu's Zhang Zhongjing formula.)
*Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae* (Baizhu, 白术), *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong, 川芎), *Semen Zanthoxyli* (Shujiao, 蜀椒) (three fen, remove sweat/sweat content), *Concha Ostreae* (Muli, 牡蛎) (*Waitai*: Baizhu and Chuanxiong each four fen, Muli two fen).
Pound the above four herbs into powder. Take one qian bi with wine, three times daily, once at night. If only pain is present, add *Radix Paeoniae Alba* (Shaoyao, 芍药). If severe pain in the epigastrium, double *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong, 川芎). If irritability, vomiting, pain, and inability to eat/drink occur, add *Radix Asari* (Xixin, 细辛) one liang, and twenty large *Rhizoma Pinelliae* (Banxia, 半夏). After taking, administer vinegar grain water. If vomiting occurs, administer vinegar grain water. If still not relieved, take wheat juice. If thirsty later, take barley porridge. Continue taking even after recovery, do not stop. ("Kutong": Xu notes a missing character "Fu" (abdomen). Shen version reads "Kutong Fu". "Tutong": *Waitai* reads "Tu Tuo" (vomiting saliva), considered correct.)
[Cheng] *Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae* (Baizhu, 白术) calms the fetus as Sovereign. *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong, 川芎) nourishes the fetus as Minister. *Semen Zanthoxyli* (Shujiao, 蜀椒) warms the fetus as Assistant. *Concha Ostreae* (Muli, 牡蛎) secures the fetus as Envoy. Note: Thin individuals with fire should use *Danggui San*. Obese individuals with cold should use *Baizhu San*; do not mix them. *Radix Paeoniae Alba* (Shaoyao, 芍药) relaxes the interior, so add it for painful conditions. *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong, 川芎) warms the interior, so double it for severe pain. Phlegm-fluid in the chest/diaphragm causes irritability, vomiting, pain, and inability to eat/drink. Add *Radix Asari* (Xixin, 细辛) to break phlegm and drain water; *Rhizoma Pinelliae* (Banxia, 半夏) to eliminate phlegm and drain water. Administer grain water to regulate the middle. If vomiting, reuse grain water to stop vomiting. If vomiting persists, switch to wheat juice to harmonize the Stomach. If vomiting stops but thirst occurs due to lack of stomach fluids, eat barley porridge to generate fluids. Continuing to take it after recovery is because barley porridge regulates the middle and tonifies the Spleen, making it suitable for regular use; it does not mean the above herbs can be taken regularly.
Xu notes: I treated my brother-in-law's wife who had phlegm-cough and hemoptysis before conception, and remained thin during pregnancy. I treated her with this formula. Due to abdominal pain, I added two large doses of *Radix Paeoniae Alba* (Shaoyao, 芍药). Phlegm decreased, cough stopped, she felt refreshed, and the fetus was stabilized.
*Heji Jufang* Baizhu San: Regulates and tonifies Chong and Ren meridians, nurtures fetal Qi. Treats pre-existing wind-cold during pregnancy, fetal atrophy, or mishandling damaging fetal Qi, often leading to miscarriage. Regular intake strengthens Qi and benefits blood, protecting the fetal store. (This is the same formula; *San Yin Fang* is identical.)
*Funren Liangfang*: Baizhu Wan. (Indications same as *Jufang* Baizhu San.)
This is the same formula, adding *Corium Corii Asini* (Ejiao, 阿胶), *Radix Rehmanniae Preparata* (Dihuang, 地黄), and *Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui, 当归). Pound into powder, make honey pills size of *Cotini Fructus*. Swallow thirty to forty pills with rice drink; wine or vinegar soup is also acceptable.
If a woman suffers fetal injury during pregnancy, experiencing abdominal fullness and inability to urinate, heaviness from the waist down resembling water retention. At seven months of pregnancy, the Taiyin should nourish but fails to do so; this is excess Heart Qi. One should puncture and drain Laogong and Guanyuan points. Mild relief of urination indicates recovery. ([Original Note]: See *Yukan*. ○ *Yukan*: "Shangtai" reads "Shanghan"; "Guanyuan" reads "Mu point of Small Intestine"; lacks the character "Wei" (slight/mild) in "Weili".)
[Cheng] At seven months, the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian nourishes the fetus. Metal is attacked by Fire, injuring Lung Metal, causing loss of fetal nourishment and failure to regulate water passages. Hence, abdominal fullness, inability to urinate, and water-retention-like sensation below the waist. Laogong point is on the palm, the Master Point of the Pericardium (Hand-Jueyin). Draining it prevents Fire from attacking Metal. Guanyuan point is below the navel, the Mu point of the Small Intestine. Draining it promotes smooth urination. This point must not be used recklessly; puncturing it can cause abortion.
Note: *Yizong Jinjian* states: The text meaning is unclear; puncturing this point causes abortion, surely due to misplaced text. No explanation is given. While this view has merit, according to *Yukan*, reading "Shangtai" as "Shanghan" makes the meaning slightly coherent. Xu Zicai's *Zhu Yue Yangtai Fang* states: During the seventh month of pregnancy, the Hand-Taiyin Meridian nourishes; one must not acupuncture or moxibustion this meridian.
