Li Jie Feng (Lime Disease / Polyarthralgia) is caused by the decline of blood and qi, where wind-cold pathogens invade the joints, preventing smooth circulation. The righteous qi and pathogenic factors clash, causing pain in all joints traversed by the pathogen; hence it is called Li Jie (passing through joints).
Li Jie swelling and pain are precisely dampness diseases. They are caused by drinking alcohol while exposed to wind, or entering water while sweating. The Classics state: "Dampness flows into the joints."
If accompanied by cold pathogens, the pain is severe; treat with Moyao San (Myrrh Powder).
Moyao San Prescription:
Myrrha (ground, half tael) Hu Jing Gu (Tiger Tibia Bone, roasted with butter, three taels)
Grind these two ingredients into powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with warm wine, three times a day.
Dazao Tang (Jujube Decoction):
Zaoren (Jujube Fruit, fifteen pieces) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, one piece) Gancao (Licorice Root, one chi) Huangqi (Astragalus Root, four taels) Mahuang (Ephedra Herb, five taels) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, two taels)
Boil in seven sheng of water until three sheng remain. Take one sheng per dose, three times a day.
Baitouweng Jiu (Peony Root Wine): Treats various wind pathogens attacking the limbs and hundreds of joints.
Take a handful of Baitouweng Cao (Pulsatilla Herb), crush it, steep it in strong wine, and take it in one dose.
Another Prescription:
Heidou (Black Soybean, stir-fried, half sheng) Weilingxian (Clematis Root, two taels) Sanggen Baipi (Mulberry Root Bark, one tael)
Decoct these three ingredients in one and a half sheng of strong wine until eight he remain. Strain and take in one dose. Replacing Sanggen Baipi with Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig) is better. Zhang Gao once suffered from arm pain and was ineffective with various medicines. A physician advised him to take a small sheng of Sangzhi, cut finely, stir-fry until fragrant, decoct in three large sheng of water until two sheng remain, and drink it all within one day at any time. After several doses, he recovered.
Xijiao Tang (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction): Treats heat-toxin flowing into the four limbs, causing Li Jie swelling and pain. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, two taels) Lingyangjiao (Saiga Antelope Horn, one tael) Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome) (each three taels) Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) (each four taels) Chidouchi (Fermented Soybean, one tael)
Boil in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain. Strain and divide into three doses. Another version includes Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root, one and a half taels), Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Fresh Rehmannia Root, each one tael), and Niubang Gen (Arctium Root, half tael). Regarding wind pathogens attacking the bone joints, Duhuo and Niubang Gen have particular expertise.
Baihua She San (White-Flowered Snake Powder):
Baihua She (White-Flowered Snake, soaked in wine, skin and bones removed, two taels) Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root, remove black skin) Manjingzi (Vittex Seed), Nixi (Achyranthes Root, soaked in wine, each four taels) Weilingxian (Clematis Root), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike, each two taels) Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower, two taels)
Grind the above seven ingredients into powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with warm wine, taken on an empty stomach and before sleep.
Nixi Tang (Achyranthes Decoction):
Nixi (Achyranthes Root, soaked in wine) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) Chishao (Red Peony Root) (each one tael) Hugutou (Tiger Bone, roasted with butter until yellow, two taels) Mangxiao (Mirabilite, separately ground fine) Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) (each half tael) Taoren (Peach Kernel, skin and tip removed, non-double kernels only, two taels)
Make the above seven ingredients into a powder. Take one to two qian per dose on an empty stomach, mixed with warm wine.
Diseng San (Sage-Resisting Powder):
Hu Jing Gu (Tiger Tibia Bone, quantity unspecified, broken, soaked in wine, roasted with wine rotationally until yellow and brittle)
Grind this single ingredient into powder. Take half a qian per dose, add one qian of Bohe Mo (Mint Powder) and half a qian of Renshen Mo (Ginseng Powder), and mix with decocted Rushen Jiu (Frankincense Wine).
Ren Zhai stated: Roast Tiger Bone with butter until yellow, crush it like rice grains. For every sheng of bone, soak in three sheng of wine for five days. Take one zhan on an empty stomach; if cold, warm it up.
Shexiang Wan (Musk Pill): Treats Bai Hu Li Jie (White Tiger Li Jie), various wind pains that wander without fixed location, feeling like insect bites, quiet during the day and severe at night, as well as all hand and foot pains.
Da Chuanwu (Large Sichuan Aconite, octagonal shape, three pieces, raw use) Quanxie (Whole Scorpion, thirty-one pieces, raw use) Heidou (Black Soybean, twenty-one grains, raw use) Dilong (Earthworm, appropriate amount)
Grind the above into fine powder, add Ban Zi (half zi, approx. three fen) of Shexiang (Musk), grind uniformly together. Use Nuomi Yin (Rice Porridge Drink) paste to make pills the size of mung beans. Take seven pills per dose, ten for severe cases. Ensure the epigastrium is empty before sleep, take with warm wine. Recovery occurs when slight cold sweat covers the body.
Xu Shumi said: I obtained this prescription. For any Li Jie or unexplained pain, one or two doses bring recovery. While in Shizhou, there was a noblewoman who suffered from wandering pain all over her body, which flared up at night, feeling like insects biting her muscles. People mostly treated it as ghostly evil. I said: This is exactly Li Jie pain; three doses cured it.
