Xing Bi (Wandering Bi Syndrome) is caused by the predominance of Wind pathogen. The nature of Wind is agile and prone to rapid changes; therefore, its symptoms wander up and down, left and right, without remaining fixed at any location. As the pathogen moves to different areas, it obstructs the flow of Blood and Qi, resulting in Bi syndrome. Although treatment involves promoting the circulation of Blood and Qi, it should primarily focus on formulas that dispel Wind. Furthermore, the chapter "Shou Yao Pian" (Chapter on Longevity and Shortness of Life) states: "Diseases located in Yang are named Feng (Wind); diseases located in Yin are named Bi; when both Yin and Yang are affected, it is named Feng Bi (Wind-Bi). 'Feng Bi' refers to the invasion of Yang pathogens into Yin." Thus, while dispersing Wind pathogens, one must also incorporate formulas that invigorate Blood. There is also Xue Bi (Blood Bi), which results from Wind attacking due to Blood deficiency, also caused by Yang pathogens invading Yin. This is essentially the same condition as Feng Bi; referred to from the perspective of Wind, it is called Feng Bi; referred to from the perspective of Blood, it is called Xue Bi. If other Wind diseases have not invaded Yin, they certainly cannot be classified as Bi syndromes.
Si Miao San (Four Marvels Powder): Treats wandering pain associated with Xing Bi.
Weilingxian (Caulis Clematidis) (soaked in wine, dried over low heat, 5 qian) Jieyangjiao Hui (Ash of Ram's Horn, 3 qian) Can'erzi (Fructus Xanthii, 1.5 qian) Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis Albae) (1 qian, stir-fried)
Grind into a fine powder. Take 1 qian bi per dose, administered with Ginger Decoction.
Ruyi Tongsheng San (Auspicious Universal Holy Powder): Treats wandering pain associated with Xing Bi.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Yumiqiao (Pericarpium Papaveris) Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli) (equal parts)
Stir-fry all ingredients together over slow fire until yellow. Take 3 qian per dose, decocted in water and taken orally.
Commentary: Mahuang is potent; combined with the astringent property of Yumiqiao (Papaver Pericarpium), its action is directed inward to the meridians rather than outward to the skin and hair, making it effective for treating Bi pain. Chuanxiong and Danggui serve to invigorate Blood; Chenpi and Dingxiang serve to promote Qi movement. When Qi and Blood circulate freely, pathogenic factors are expelled. Zhigancao is used to harmonize the formula and relieve urgency/spasm. Stir-frying them together over slow fire aims to blend their aromas and properties, ensuring they synergize rather than conflict.
Danxi’s Formula for Treating Wandering Pain in Bi Syndrome:
Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Chinensis) Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) (each stir-fried with wine, 2 qian) Jiuweilingxian (Caulis Clematidis processed with wine) Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis Albae) Lingyangjiao Hui (Ash of Antelope Horn) (each 1 qian)
Add one slice of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct in water, and take orally.
Mofeng Gao (Wind-Rubbing Ointment):
Bimazi (Semen Ricini) (1 liang, peeled and ground) Caowutou (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii) (0.5 liang, raw use) Ruxiang (Resina Frankincense) (1 qian, separately ground)
Refine Zhu Zhi (Suet Porci) to remove impurities and form an ointment base. Mix in the medicinal powders evenly. Rub between palms until hot, then apply and massage onto the area of wandering pain. This method is highly effective.
