(There are ten acupoints in total on both sides)
1. Yangbai (GB14, White Sun): There are two points, located one cun above the eyebrow, directly vertical to the pupil. It is the meeting point of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and the Yang Linking Vessel.
It treats headache and eye pain, excessive eye discharge, chills and shivering due to cold in the back's intermuscular spaces, which cannot be warmed even by wearing heavy clothes. Moxibustion: three moxa cones. Acupuncture: insert 0.2 cun.
2. Chengqi (ST1, Receiving Tears): There are two points, located seven fen below the eye, in the depression directly vertical to the pupil. It is the meeting point of the Chong Vessels, the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
It treats facial paralysis with deviation of the mouth and eyes, squinting or inability to open the eyes, twitching of facial muscles pulling at the mouth and eyes, involuntary eye movements, spontaneous cold tears, and redness and pain in the eyes. Acupuncture is contraindicated; needling may cause darkening of the eyes. Moxibustion: three moxa cones, with cone size similar to a large barley grain. Contraindications follow standard methods.
3. Sibai (ST2, Four Whites): There are two points, located one cun below the eye, where the Qi of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian emerges.
It treats headache and vertigo, formation of white opacities in the eyes, and continuous twitching of the eye muscles after exposure to slight wind. When using acupuncture, one must be steady and cautious before inserting the needle. If inserted too deeply, it may cause darkening of the eyes. Moxibustion: seven moxa cones. Acupuncture: insert 0.3 cun.
4. Dicang (ST4, Earth Storehouse): There are two points, located four fen lateral to the corner of the mouth. If there is a slight pulse movement nearby below, it is the intersection of the Chong Vessels and the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. In cases of long-standing wind-stroke, the pulse may not move.
It treats hemifacial paralysis with inability to close the eye, aphonia, inability to retain food or fluids, drooling, and continuous twitching of the eye muscles. Treatment follows the principle of treating the left side for right-sided disease, and the right side for left-sided disease. Acupuncture: insert 0.3 cun, retain for five breaths, and apply reducing method upon arrival of Qi. Moxibustion is also effective: fourteen moxa cones daily, or forty-nine cones for severe cases. The moxa cone should be the size of a thick hairpin leg. If the mouth deviates further after moxibustion, treat Chengjiang (CV24) with forty-nine cones to cure. Avoid pork, fish, hot noodles, and sexual intercourse.
5. Daying (ST5, Great Meeting): There are two points, located one cun two fen anterior to the angle of the mandible, in the bony depression where the artery pulses. It can also be located by aligning vertically below the mouth towards the shoulders. It is where the Qi of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian emerges.
It treats alternating chills and fever, neck pain, scrofula, dental caries pain, frequent yawning and shortness of breath, lockjaw due to wind-spasm, toothache, swelling of the cheek and mandible, aversion to cold, and tongue stiffness with inability to speak. Acupuncture: insert 0.3 cun, retain for seven breaths. Moxibustion: three moxa cones. Supplementary note: For facial edema due to wind-stroke, inability to close the eyes, and continuous twitching of the lips and corners of the mouth, needling this point can lead to immediate recovery.
