In the spring of the Ji Xu year, I went to a certain hospital in Shanghai to treat a patient with fourth-stage syphilis affecting the collaterals. Due to his heart weakness, which the hospital could not manage, the patient's relative requested my acupuncture treatment, so I visited every other day. One day, I heard a woman with a Northern accent weeping softly in the women's ward. When I asked about the cause, the relative told me she was the wife of Captain Dong from the police station, who was scheduled for leg amputation, hence her grief. Upon inquiring about her condition, she reported redness, swelling, and pain on the dorsum of the foot, having been hospitalized for six months without improvement. The relative urged me to find a solution. Pitying this woman that life without feet would be akin to death, I went to inquire in detail. It turned out that due to stagnant heat combined with external contraction, pathogenic factors remained in the meridians. Mixed Chinese and Western treatments were applied indiscriminately. Prescribed warming and tonifying agents prevented the expulsion of pathogens, causing them to sink downward into the foot, resulting in severe redness, swelling, and pain. Qi rushed upward to the heart, causing restlessness day and night, disrupting sleep and appetite for months. I stated that amputation was unnecessary and that other methods could save her. A doctor at the hospital questioned, "Can you cure this disease?" I replied, "Both Chinese and Western medicine can cure it; only you fail to recognize this syndrome." First, an external treatment method to extract toxins and dissipate blood stasis was used. Bloodletting was performed at Weizhong (BL40), releasing a full sheng of toxic blood. Acupuncture points Zusanli (ST36), Xuanzhong (GB39), and Sanyinjiao (SP6) were needled. The next day, she felt stable, and within ten days, she largely recovered. During the Dragon Boat Festival, she presented zongzi and golden pills, and the couple came together to kowtow, thanking us for their rebirth.
An elderly surnamed Ye, aged sixty-three, suffered from shoulder and back pain extending from the neck down along the Du Meridian for seven or eight cun. She could not turn her body, and consequently, both arms were painful and unable to lift. She cried out day and night, a scene too miserable to bear. Her pulse was deep and slow, and her tongue was crimson and slippery. The *Ling Shu* states, "Excess of Qi leads to shoulder and back pain." Since the pain was located on the Du Meridian, it indicated excess Lung Qi. The Feishu (BL13) point was first reduced (sedated). That very night, she slept peacefully. Subsequently, Jianjing (GB21), Jianliao (TE14), and Quchi (LI11) were needled, leading to recovery.
Zhu You, aged forty-two, had always been physically weak. He had experienced dull pain in the Zhongwan area for over ten years, which came and went. In the recent month, the pain became continuous, even leading to syncope. Initially, pressing with the hand temporarily relieved the pain, but later he rejected pressure. He felt a mass of Qi moving upward from below; if it reached the Jiwei area, severe pain occurred, and if it ascended further to the throat, syncope ensued. His pulse was large and rapid, and his tongue coating was yellow, black, and greasy. This was diagnosed as turbid Yin Qi knotting and failing to disperse in the stomach region. Needling Zhongwan (CV12) and Zusanli (ST36) gradually stopped the pain. Subsequent needling of Guanyuan (CV4) and Zhaohai (KI6) resulted in the passage of several bean-sized, black fecal pellets, leading to recovery.
