Methods for moxibustion treating cold-heat disorders: First, moxa the Dazhui (GV14) acupoint, with the number of moxa cones (zhuang) corresponding to the patient's age in years. Next, moxa the Jugu (end of the coccyx) point, with the number of moxa cones also corresponding to the age in years. Moxa the depressed areas of the Back-Shu points on the back; moxa the depressed areas of the arms and shoulders; moxa between the two hypochondriac regions; moxa the end of the Juegu (GB39) at the upper aspect of the lateral malleolus; moxa between the little toe and the second toe; moxa the vessels that appear depressed; moxa the posterior aspect of the lateral malleolus; moxa the area above the Collarbone (Quepen) bone where palpation reveals hardness and pulsation resembling a tendon; moxa the depressed areas in the chest (Yingzhong) and interosseous spaces; moxa three cun below the umbilicus at the Guanyuan (CV4) acupoint; moxa the arterial pulse at the pubic hairline; moxa the space between muscles three cun below the knee; moxa the arterial pulse on the dorsum of the foot belonging to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Moxa one acupoint on the vertex of the head.
The *Zisheng Jing* states: Whenever moxibustion induces a sore (moxa sore), the disease will be cured; if no sore develops, the disease will not heal. The *Jiayi Jing* states: For moxa sores that do not develop, apply a heated old shoe sole to the area by ironing it; the sore will develop within three days. Currently, people use three to five stalks of red-skin scallions, removing the green parts, roasting them until cooked over fire, crushing them, and applying them hot to the moxa sore for more than ten times, causing the sore to develop within three days. Alternatively, soaking the area in raw sesame oil can induce development; some use decoctions of Gleditsia sinensis (Zaojiao), cooling it and frequently dabbing it to induce development. Some fear that declining Qi and Blood prevent development and take Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish Qi and Blood; this cannot be generalized. Some develop sores after additional one or two cones of moxa; some develop sores after consuming hot foods suitable for post-moxibustion care, such as roasted fish, fried tofu, mutton, etc. One must flexibly assist according to circumstances and not leave it to nature, otherwise the sore may never develop.
In ancient times, moxa sores were dressed without plasters, aiming for abundant pus discharge to ensure disease elimination. The *Zisheng Jing* states: Use willow catkins in spring, bamboo membrane in summer, new cotton in autumn, and white fine wool from rabbit bellies or cat bellies in winter. Nowadays, people mostly use medicated plasters, changing them two to three times daily. Seeking rapid healing is contrary to the original intent of treating the disease. However, modern use of plasters is for convenience; one should not seek speed. If the plaster remains intact, long-term application is sufficient. Frequent changes lead to rapid healing, which may prevent the complete removal of the disease root.
Use Angelica dahurica (Baizhi), Venus grass (Jinxingcao), Lophatherum gracile (Dan Zhuye), Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin), Coptis chinensis (Lian), Frankincense (Ruxiang), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Mentha haplocalyx (Bohe), and scallion whites, stir-fried with calcined lead powder and sesame oil to prepare a plaster for application. If other plasters are used that do not match the syndrome, and the sore mouth heals easily while pathogenic Qi cannot exit, it is problematic. If other substances are used, they cause dryness and pain, and are inconvenient.
