Using a fire lens (a crystal convex lens) to reflect sunlight and catch moxa at the focal point to ignite it is the superior method. Secondly, striking flint on stone steps can also produce sparks, but it is inferior to lighting a sesame oil lamp.
Chest binding syndrome due to cold damage: Take seven cun of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), grind it into powder. Take seven seeds of Crotonis Fructus (Badou), without removing the oil. Mix them together, blend with water, place the mixture into the umbilicus, and apply moxibustion to the Zhongwan (CV12) or relevant abdominal acupoints. First, apply garlic-moxibustion using a slice of single-clove garlic; after symptoms manifest, moxa the mother bulb of the garlic. Frequent application yields efficacy.
Treating root masses: Locate the point below the twelfth thoracic vertebra, 3.5 cun lateral to the posterior midline, and apply moxibustion.
Hernia, cold qi pain, and periumbilical/abdominal pain: Moxa both sides of the Dadun (LR1) acupoint, two sessions each side.
Nocturnal emission in men and women: Locate 3 cun lateral to both sides below the fourteenth thoracic vertebra; applying seven moxa cones (zhuang) at these points is effective. This point is named Jing Xue (Essence Point). Another prescription: Apply Sesame Oil (Tongyou) to the male genitalia or female vulva; this prevents the pathogenic factor from returning and effectively treats nocturnal emission.
The Qi of Heaven and Earth remains stable under normal conditions, leading to health; when it changes abnormally, disease arises. Sages treat it like a precious treasure, while ordinary people act recklessly and damage the Supreme Harmony (Taihe). All diseases arise from disturbances in Qi. Specifically:
- Qi disorder manifests as incessant laughter.
- Grief consumes Qi, manifesting as sourness in the nose.
- Fear causes Qi to sink, manifesting as sudden diarrhea of clear fluid.
- Cold causes Qi to contract, manifesting as coldness.
- Heat causes Qi to leak outward, manifesting as sudden sweating.
- Shock causes Qi to become chaotic, with the Spirit having no refuge, manifesting as dementia or epilepsy.
- Overexertion depletes Qi, causing reduced essence in men, amenorrhea in women, panting, and sweating.
- Pensive worry causes Qi to knot, where the Heart holds onto thoughts and the Spirit has nowhere to settle.
Grief can treat anger by moving the person with words of sorrow and bitterness. Joy can treat grief by entertaining the person with playful and licentious words. Fear can treat joy by terrifying the person with words of imminent death. Anger can treat pensive worry by provoking the person with words of insult and deception. Worry can treat fear by diverting attention with words that make one think of other things and forget the source of fear. These five methods must be cunning and varied, leaving nothing undone, to move the senses; only those with talent can employ these methods. Heat can treat cold, cold can treat heat, rest can treat fatigue, fatigue can treat rest, and habituation can treat shock. The Classics state: For someone who is shocked, if they are suddenly exposed to the frightening situation repeatedly until they see and hear it often, they will no longer be shocked.
