(Attached: Pain in the Mandible and Neck)
The Yellow Emperor asked, saying: "One suffers from headache that persists for many years without resolution. What disease is this?"
Qibo replied, saying: "This should be due to exposure to severe cold, which penetrates inward to the bone marrow. The bone marrow is governed by the brain. When Yang Qi rebels upward [to the brain], it causes headache, and the teeth also hurt."
For headache caused by rebellion of Yang Qi, accompanied by chest fullness and inability to breathe freely, Renying (ST 9) should be selected.
For headache caused by Jue Qi rebellion, with the face appearing swollen and mental restlessness, the Foot-Yangming and Foot-Taiyang meridians should be selected (one version says Foot-Shaoyin).
For headache caused by Jue Qi rebellion, with pain in the vessels, sadness, or spontaneous weeping, observe the arteries on the head where there is abnormal fullness; puncture them, drain all the blood, and subsequently regulate the Foot-Jueyin meridian.
For headache caused by Jue Qi rebellion, with belching (Jiuxu reads as 'yi') and forgetfulness, where palpation cannot locate a specific tender point, select the arteries on the left and right sides of the head and face, and subsequently select the Foot-Taiyang meridian (one version says Foot-Shaoyin).
For headache caused by Jue Qi rebellion, with dizziness and corresponding sensation in the waist and spine, first select Tianzhu (BL 10), and subsequently select the Foot-Taiyang meridian.
For headache caused by Jue Qi rebellion, with severe pain and heat in the bones anterior and posterior to the ears, first bleed the vessels, and subsequently select the Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Shaoyin meridians (another version also reads Foot-Taiyang).
For headache caused by Jue Qi rebellion, with severe pain and pulsating blood in the vessels anterior and posterior to the ears, bleed the vessels, and subsequently select the Foot-Shaoyang meridian.
In True Headache, with severe pain throughout the brain and cold hands and feet extending to the joints, it is a death case and untreatable.
Headache should not be treated at the Back-Shu points. If there is internal evil blood due to being struck or fallen, or if internal injury pain has not yet ceased, one may puncture immediately at the site; do not select distant points.
Headache that cannot be needled refers to cases where severe Bi syndrome worsens, or where wind pathogens cause daily recurrence; symptoms may slightly improve but cannot be cured.
For headache caused by cold in the head, first select the Hand-Shaoyang and Hand-Yangming meridians, and subsequently select the Foot-Shaoyang and Foot-Yangming meridians.
For mandibular pain, puncture the Hand-Yangming meridian and the full vessels in the mandible to bleed.
For inability to flex or extend the head and neck, puncture the Foot-Taiyang meridian; for inability to look back, puncture the Hand-Taiyang meridian (one theory says Hand-Yangming).
For mandibular pain, puncture the arterial pulse at Quzhou of the Foot-Yangming meridian until blood appears; pain stops immediately. If it does not stop, puncture Renying along the meridian; pain stops immediately.
Headache is primarily treated by Mucuang (GB 15), Tianchong (GB 16), and Fengchi (GB 20).
Headache caused by Jue Qi rebellion is primarily treated by Kongzui (LU 6).
Facial swelling associated with Jue Qi rebellion is primarily treated by Shangqiu (SP 5).
