Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy acts more swiftly than medication, a fact known to all. In the field of medicine, *Zhenjiu Daquan* (Complete Collection of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) are widely circulated in the world. The methods of rubbing (Cuo), following along the meridians (Xun), and moving against or with the flow (Ni Shun), as well as the so-called scraping (Gua), trembling (Zhan), shaking (Yao), pressing (An), grasping (She), flicking (Dan), rubbing (Cuo), and searching (Sou) techniques, are all explained clearly and distinctly, allowing practitioners to understand them at a glance. Once these are understood, one can then learn that qi rising belongs to Yang, qi descending belongs to Yin; cooling within heat, warming within cold; taking more cold for excessive warmth, and more warmth for excessive cold; left-side tonification and right-side sedation; the distance between acupoints; the number of breaths; and the degrees of depth and shallowness, studying them in sequence. I wish that those who treat diseases in the world would select this book to study it. By applying the methods of floating, sinking, slow, and rapid needle manipulation, and by carefully considering the subtleties of treating the right side for left-sided disease, the left for the right, the upper for the lower, and the lower for the upper, one may perhaps not deviate from the aspiration to save lives. This is the hope for those who practice acupuncture in the world. This is the preface.
The time is the auspicious day of the latter ten days of the third month in the Bing Shen year of the Daoguang reign (1836).
Written under the lamp by Zhan Jingyan, aged eighty-two, from Guji.
When discussing doctors performing acupuncture and moxibustion, if they do not recognize which meridian is diseased, arbitrarily select acupoints, and do not know the method of restraining guiding ascending Yang, nor the method of descending Qi into Yin, causing patients to suffer painfully without recovery, why is this?
The answer is: First, missing the acupoint and not understanding Qi movement. Second, not understanding left-side tonification and right-side sedation, and even less knowing the degrees of depth. Third, not understanding the methods of descending Qi, spitting, and the three lower methods. Sixth, not understanding the abdominal coiling needle method, exclusively using tonification and sedation, causing Qi and Blood to scatter. Seventh, not understanding shifting pain and focusing soreness, nor understanding cooling within heat, warming within cold, taking more cold for excess warmth, and more warmth for excess cold; nor understanding treating the right side for left hemiplegia, the left for the right; nor understanding treating the lower part for upper diseases, and the upper for lower diseases. Eighth, not clarifying the floating, sinking, slow, rapid, tight, and choppy sensations in the needle, not knowing the origin of the patient's illness, nor understanding the breath counts for tonification generating and sedation completing, how can left-side tonification and right-side sedation cure it? One must first examine these eight hand techniques to treat, clarify the contraindications of needling, distinguish the distances of meridians and acupoints, the breath counts of each individual, and the degrees of depth and shallowness; using them will result in no failure to heal. One must not withdraw the needle when tonification or sedation is required, nor apply a uniform approach indiscriminately; the key lies in harmonization. My master understands the true secret formulas of his genuine teacher, and the secret essentials of hand techniques were transmitted personally; errors must not occur.
