Twenty-eight Acupoints of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Left and Right)
Shangyang (LI1, Metal). Also known as Jueyang. Located on the radial side of the index finger, at the corner of the nail, approximately the width of a leek leaf. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Acupuncture: 0.1 cun deep. Retain needle for the duration of one exhalation.
Erjian (LI2, Water). Also known as Jiangu. Located in the depression medial to the proximal phalanx of the index finger, anterior to the metacarpophalangeal joint. Acupuncture: 0.3 cun deep. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones.
Sanjian (LI3, Wood). Also known as Shaogu. Located in the depression medial to the proximal phalanx of the index finger, posterior to the metacarpophalangeal joint. Acupuncture: 0.3 cun deep. Retain needle for the duration of three exhalations. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones.
Hegu (LI4). Also known as Hukou (Tiger's Mouth). Located in the depression between the first and second metacarpal bones (the岐骨 area). (Wang Ming states: In the hollow center between the two bones of the thumb and index finger.) Acupuncture: 0.3 cun deep. Retain needle for the duration of three exhalations. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Additional note: This point should not be needled during pregnancy, as it may damage fetal Qi. (Qian Jin Fang states: Between the two bones at the tiger's mouth of the hand.)
Yangxi (LI5, Fire). Also known as Zhongkui. Located in the depression between the two tendons on the radial side of the wrist. Acupuncture: 0.3 cun deep. Retain needle for the duration of seven exhalations. Moxibustion: 2 moxa cones. Taboos are the same as above.
Pianli (LI6). The Luo-Connecting point of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Located 3 cun distal to the wrist crease, diverging to connect with the Taiyin Lung Meridian. Acupuncture: 0.2 cun deep. Retain needle for the duration of seven exhalations. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Wang Ming states: Moxibustion 5 moxa cones.
Wenliu (LI7). Also known as Nizhu or Chitou. Located distal to the wrist. For tall individuals, 3 cun distal to the wrist; for short individuals, 6 cun distal to the wrist. Acupuncture: 0.3 cun deep. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Wang Ming states: Located between 5 and 6 cun distal to the wrist.
Xialian (LI8). Located below the accessory bone (radius), 1 cun distal to Shanglian (LI9), where the muscle fibers diverge obliquely outward. Acupuncture: 0.5 cun deep. Retain needle for the duration of two exhalations. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones.
Note: There is a Xialian point in the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian as well. The Xialian point on the leg corresponds to Xiajuxu (ST39).
Shanglian (LI9). Located 1 cun distal to Zusanli (ST36), where the muscle fibers diverge uniquely towards the intersection of the Yangming meridian and obliquely outward. Acupuncture: 0.5 cun deep. Moxibustion: 5 moxa cones.
Note: There is a Shanglian point in the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian as well. The Shanglian point on the leg corresponds to Shangjuxu (ST37).
Zusanli (LI10, Hand Zusanli). Located 3 cun distal to Quchi (LI11). (The Hand-Yangming Meridian chart records this as 2 cun.) When pressed, the muscle rises at the end of the thenar eminence (Duirou). Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Acupuncture: 0.2 cun deep. Wang Ming states: Also known as Shousanli (Hand Zusanli), located 2 cun distal to Quchi.
There are two points named "Zusanli": one is Hand Zusanli, and the other is Foot Zusanli. This refers to Hand Zusanli. Thus, the Ming Tang Jing states: "Also known as Hand Zusanli," which is correct. The Tong Ren Jing states: "Zusanli is 3 cun distal to Quchi." However, the Ming Tang Jing says 2 cun, and the Hand-Yangming Meridian chart also says 2 cun. It is likely that the Tong Ren Jing version contains an error, miswriting "two" as "three."
Quchi (LI11, Earth). Located in the depression at the lateral end of the cubital crease when the elbow is flexed, against the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. To locate, hug the chest with hands. Acupuncture: 0.7 cun deep. After obtaining Deqi (arrival of Qi), apply reducing method first, then reinforcing method. Moxibustion is highly effective. Can be moxa-burned 3 cones. Wang Ming states: Quchi belongs to Wood. Located in the depression at the head of the cubital crease on the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. Daily moxibustion: 7 cones, up to 200 cones total, then pause for over ten days, and resume until another 200 cones are completed. Taboos are the same as above. The text below states: Located at the head of the crease in the depression between the lateral epicondyle and the flexed elbow bone. Su Wen annotation: Between the two bones at the lateral epicondyle when the elbow is flexed. Qian Jin Fang: In the depression at the lateral bend of the elbow.
Zhou Liao (LI12). Located in the depression at the lateral margin of the large bone of the elbow. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Acupuncture: 0.3 cun deep.
Wuli (LI13). Located 3 cun proximal to the elbow, along the vessel towards the center of the major pulse. Moxibustion: 10 moxa cones. Contraindicated for acupuncture. Su Wen - Qi Xue Lun states: "Great Prohibition Twenty-Five." Five cun distal to Tianfu (LU3). The annotation clarifies: This refers to the Wuli point. It is called "Great Prohibition" because it is forbidden to needle. Furthermore, there are two Wuli points: one is in the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, distinct from this point. This point is the Hand Wuli. The "Five cun distal to Tianfu" mentioned in the Su Wen refers to this Hand Wuli. The annotation stating "five li after Chize" also refers to this Hand Wuli. Chize (LU5) is located on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Binao (LI14). Located at the tip of the muscle, 7 cun proximal to the elbow. It is the Luo-Connecting point of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Acupuncture: 0.3 cun deep. Wang Ming states: In the hollow depression between the bones, one fu-width distal to Jianyu (LI15). Locate with the arm relaxed horizontally. Do not clench the fist or tense the arm, or the acupoint will close. Moxibustion is preferred over acupuncture. Daily moxibustion: 7 cones, up to 100 cones. If needling, do not exceed 3-5 times; excessive needling may cause harm. Taboos are the same as above. Qian Jin Fang names it Toutong. (Jianyu is located on the shoulder.)
