Seven Acupoints on the Midline of the Ying Shu Region
Tiantu (CV22) is located in the depression below the laryngeal prominence. Needle 5 fen. Retain for three breaths. Disperse immediately upon obtaining Qi. Moxibustion is also permissible, though it is less effective than needling. The needle should be inserted vertically or horizontally downwards. Do not lower your hand (i.e., do not insert too deeply to avoid injuring internal organs). If the Qi of the five Zang organs is injured, it will shorten one's lifespan; the contraindications are the same as mentioned above. *Ming Tang* states: In the central depression 5 fen below the laryngeal prominence of the neck. Moxa 5 zhuang. Commentary on *Su Wen: Qi Xue Lun* states: In the central depression 4 cun below the laryngeal prominence of the neck. Needle 1 cun. Moxa 3 zhuang. *Jia Yi Jing* states: 5 cun below the laryngeal prominence. *Ming Tang* and *Jiu Xiao Er* state: Between the two bones 3 cun below the laryngeal prominence. (*Qian Jin Fang* names this point Tian Qu; current collation confirms that the point 5 cun below the laryngeal prominence is correct.)
Xuanji (CV21) is located in the depression 1 cun below Tiantu. Take the point with the head raised. Moxa 5 zhuang. Needle 3 fen.
Huagai (CV20) is located in the depression 1 cun below Xuanji. Take the point with the head raised. Needle 3 fen. Moxa 5 zhuang. *Ming Tang* states: Moxa 3 zhuang. Another version states: Moxa 5 zhuang.
Zigong (CV19) is located in the depression 1.6 cun below Huagai. Take the point with the head raised. Moxa 5 zhuang. Needle 3 fen. *Ming Tang* states: 1 cun below Huagai. Moxa 7 zhuang. (The small edition agrees.)
Yutang (CV18), also known as Yuying, is located in the depression 1.6 cun below Zigong. Moxa 5 zhuang. Needle 3 fen.
Danzhong (CV17), alternatively written as “”, also known as Yuan'er, is located 1.6 cun below Yutang, in the depression directly between the two nipples horizontally. Take the point in a supine position. Moxa 49 zhuang (7x7). If needled, it may unfortunately cause premature death. *Ming Tang* states: Moxa 7 zhuang daily, up to 49 zhuang. Needling is prohibited; if violated, it may unfortunately cause death. *Jia Yi Jing* states: Needle 3 fen. *Xia Jing* states: Moxa 3 zhuang. *Qian Jin Fang* states: 1 cun above Jiutui.
*Ling Lan Mi Dian Lun* states: Danzhong is the official of the minister envoy, from which joy and pleasure arise. Explainers say: Danzhong is the sea of Qi. However, the Heart Master is the sovereign, responsible for disseminating and transmitting orders; Danzhong governs Qi and distributes Yin and Yang through Qi. When Qi is harmonious and emotions are appropriate, joy arises naturally, distributing Yin and Yang. Thus, it is called the minister envoy. Since then, Danzhong is one of the twelve Zang organs, serving as the minister envoy, being the sea of Qi, and distributing Yin and Yang; it is not comparable to other acupoints. For diseases such as Qi obstruction, diaphragmatic Qi stagnation, lung Qi rebellion with wheezing, inability to swallow food, and sensations of blockage in the chest, moxibustion on this point is suitable. (Commentary on *Nan Jing*: Qi converges at the San Jiao; externally, the tendons align between the two nipples; for Qi disorders, treat this point.)
Zhongting (CV16) is located in the depression 1.6 cun below Danzhong. Moxa 5 zhuang. Needle 3 fen. *Ming Tang* states: 2 fen. *Xia Jing* states: 1 cun below Danzhong. Moxa 3 zhuang.
