The *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: The Qi of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) circulates through all Yang meridians. Therefore, a specific designation called "Yuan" (Original) was established. In treating any disease, one must needle according to the Master and Guest points of each respective meridian. The "Master" refers to the Yuan-Source point. The "Guest" refers to the Luo-Connecting point. For example, if there is pathology in the Lung Meridian, one may needle the Yuan-Source point Taiyuan (LU9) of this meridian, and additionally needle the Luo-Connecting point Pianli (LI6) of the Large Intestine Meridian. The remaining meridians follow this pattern.
Zhongfu (LU1, Front-Mu point of the Lung) Jueque (CV14, Front-Mu point of the Heart) Qimen (LR14, Front-Mu point of the Liver) Zhangmen (LR13, Front-Mu point of the Spleen) Jingmen (GB25, Front-Mu point of the Kidney) Riyue (GB24, Front-Mu point of the Gallbladder) Zhongwan (CV12, Front-Mu point of the Stomach) Tianshu (ST25, Front-Mu point of the Large Intestine) Guanyuan (CV4, Front-Mu point of the Small Intestine) Shimen (CV5, Front-Mu point of the Sanjiao/Triple Burner) Zhongji (CV3, Front-Mu point of the Bladder).
Li Dongyuan stated: Whenever treating the Front-Mu points on the abdomen, it is due to a deficiency of Original Qi (Yuan Qi), which constitutes drawing from Yin to guide Yang. If the condition involves pathogenic factors from the Six Excesses (Liu Yin: Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) or conditions such as upper heat and lower cold, or diseases affecting sinews, bones, skin, flesh, vessels, and blood, erroneously selecting the He-Sea point of the Stomach Meridian or various abdominal Front-Mu points will inevitably lead to danger.
Feishu (BL13, located below the 3rd thoracic vertebra) Xinshu (BL15, located below the 5th thoracic vertebra) Ganshu (BL18, located below the 9th thoracic vertebra) Pishu (BL20, located below the 11th thoracic vertebra) Shenshu (BL23, located below the 14th thoracic vertebra) Juyinsu (BL14, located below the 4th thoracic vertebra) Danshu (BL19, located below the 10th thoracic vertebra) Weishu (BL21, located below the 12th thoracic vertebra) Sanjiaoshu (BL22, located below the 13th thoracic vertebra) Dachangshu (BL25, located below the 16th thoracic vertebra) Xiaochangshu (BL27, located below the 18th thoracic vertebra) Pangguangshu (BL28, located below the 19th thoracic vertebra).
Li Dongyuan stated: Wind-cold pathogens from heaven invade the interior and enter the back organs. Regarding human susceptibility to external wind pathogens, there are two theories. If pathogens strike the Yang aspect, they flow into the meridians. Such diseases begin with external cold and ultimately manifest as external heat. Therefore, when treating wind-cold pathogens, one should treat the Back-Shu points of the respective organs. ("Mu" is interchangeable with "Mo," referring to the membranes between muscles, which are sites where Zang organ Qi gathers; thus, Mu points are on the Yin side. "Shu" is analogous to the transport function; the Qi of the six Yin and six Yang meridians is transported and transmitted through these points; thus, Shu points are on the Yang side.)
