There are twelve months in a year and twelve double-hours (Shichen) in a day. The Zi-Wu meridian serves as the longitude (Jing), and the Mao-You meridian serves as the latitude (Wei). (In celestial phenomena, those that remain fixed are termed Jing [longitude/meridian], while those in motion are termed Wei [latitude/parallel]. Zi and Wu correspond to the North and South Poles, residing in their positions without moving, thus designated as Jing. Mao and You constantly rise in the east and set in the west, with constellations revolving endlessly, thus designated as Wei.) The heavens encompass twenty-eight mansions (Xiu), with seven stars per quadrant, totaling twenty-eight stars. (The Eastern quadrant comprises Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, Ji; the Northern quadrant comprises Dou, Niu, Nu, Xu, Wei, Shi, Bi; the Western quadrant comprises Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zi, Shen; the Southern quadrant comprises Jing, Gui, Liu, Xing, Zhang, Yi, Zhen—collectively forming four sets of seven, i.e., twenty-eight stars.) Fang and Mao constitute the latitude. (Fang is located at Mao; Mao is located at You.) Xu and Zhang constitute the longitude. (Xu is located at Zi; Zhang is located at Wu.) Therefore, the segment from Fang to Bi belongs to Yang. (Its position spans Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen.) The segment from Mao to Xin belongs to Yin. (Its position spans You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin.) Yang governs the daytime, and Yin governs the nighttime. Consequently, the circulation of Weiqi (Defensive Qi) completes fifty cycles throughout the body in one day and night. During the day, it circulates in the Yang aspect twenty-five times. (From the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian; see details below.) At night, it circulates in the Yin aspect twenty-five times, cycling through the Five Zang Organs. (According to the text, the path proceeds from the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian to the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian,唯独 omitting the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian; this should be cross-referenced with other chapters. ○ The character "Sui" [Year] should be read as "Zang" [Organ], implying that Heaven's Yang governs the day, and Human Yang governs the Fu Organs, so Weiqi circulates in the Yang aspect twenty-five times during the day; Heaven's Yin governs the night, and Human Yin governs the Zang Organs, so it cycles through the Five Zang Organs at night.) Thus, at dawn, when Yin is exhausted, Yang Qi emerges from the eyes. (Jingming BL-1.) When the eyes open, Qi ascends to the head, follows the neck down along the Foot-Taiyang pathway, travels down the back, and reaches the tip of the little toe. (Zhiyin BL-67.) Its dispersed branches diverge from the outer canthus, descend to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian, and reach the lateral side of the little finger. (Shaoze SI-1.) Another dispersed branch diverges from the outer canthus. (Tongziliao GB-1.) It descends along the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and enters between the fourth and fifth toes. (Qiaoyin GB-44.) Above, following the lateral aspect of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, it descends to the space between the little and ring fingers. (Guanchong TE-1.) A separate branch ascends to the front of the ear, merging with the collateral vessels of the mandible area. (Regions of Chengqi ST-1 and Jiache ST-6.) It injects into the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, descends to the dorsum of the foot, and enters between the second and third toes. (Lidui ST-45.) Its dispersed branches descend from behind the ear, enter the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, pass between the thumb and index finger, and enter the palm. Upon reaching the foot, it enters the sole, exits at the medial malleolus, descends into the Yin aspects, and finally converges back at the eyes, thereby completing one cycle.
