(Also known as Wind Epilepsy)
Wind Epilepsy is caused by deficiency of Qi and Blood, allowing pathogenic factors to invade the Yin meridians. Additionally, if a mother suffers a sudden great fright during pregnancy, the essence and Qi may congregate, causing the child to develop epilepsy after birth.
Upon onset, the patient falls to the ground, vomits saliva and foam, loses consciousness, and is unaware of their surroundings.
Generally, mania (Kuang Bing) is mostly due to Fire. This may result from frustration in planning or excessive rumination leading to stagnation, where grievances cannot be expressed and anger cannot be vented, causing the Qi of the Liver and Gallbladder to rebel upwards.
Wood and Fire combining as pathogens constitute a true excess syndrome of the East (Liver). When this pathogen invades the Heart, it causes the Spirit (Shen) to lose its residence; when it invades the Stomach, it manifests as violent, domineering, and stubborn behavior. Therefore, clearing and treating Fire should be prioritized, while simultaneously addressing Phlegm or Qi based on their severity.
Dementia-like epilepsy (Dian Bing) is mostly caused by Phlegm and Qi stagnation. Whenever Qi rebels and Phlegm stagnates, they can obstruct the meridians and block the orifices of the Heart. Thus, upon onset, there is dizziness, sudden collapse, deviation of the mouth and eyes, upward rolling of the eyeballs, convulsions of the hands and feet, and rigidity of the waist and spine. The patient recovers after about the time it takes to eat a meal. The variation in these symptoms is precisely due to whether the Qi is disordered or smooth. Therefore, one must distinguish between Phlegm and Qi and treat the more severe factor first.
Those who normally have no Phlegm but gradually develop dementia due to emotional depression, excessive worry, doubt, fear, or shock, may exhibit inverted speech, inappropriate actions, excessive sweating, or chronic sorrow. Their symptoms are bizarre and varied. The pulse will be wiry, rapid, large, or small, changing unpredictably. This indicates rebellious Qi invading the Heart. Some cases are curable, others are not, depending on the strength of Stomach Qi and Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Recovery requires waiting for the right time and cannot be rushed.
Children do not suffer from Mania, but Epilepsy is common. Children's diseases may stem from prenatal Qi or postnatal fright.
Since children's Spirit Qi is still weak, fright depletes the Qi of the Liver and Gallbladder, causing the Spirit to lose its residence. With an empty residence, Righteous Qi cannot govern, allowing Phlegm and Pathogens to cause chaos. Therefore, when treating childhood fright-induced epilepsy, one must first examine the Righteous Qi and then investigate the pathogenic factors, treating them appropriately.
When Evil Heat attacks the Heart causing spontaneous laughter, use Zhi Xiao San (Stop Laughing Powder).
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Cinnabaris (Dansha), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), decocted in water, taken with infant urine (Tongbian).
Unremitting laughter indicates excessive Heart Fire. Use Jin Hua Tang (Golden Flower Decoction).
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, stir-fried), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Zhi Banxia), decocted in water, taken with Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi).
