Acupuncture and moxibustion for the initial stage of Shanghan (Cold Damage), one to two days after onset, presenting with headache, aversion to cold, and fever, is suitable for moxibustion at Jueque (CV14, Pericardium Mu-Point), Shangwan (CV13, Upper Abdomen), and Zhongwan (CV12, Middle Abdomen), each fifty moxa cones (from *Defang Fang*). ○ For persistent high fever in Shanghan, reduce Quchi (LI11, Pool at the Crook); tonify Jiegu (GB39, Bone Gap); puncture Xangu (ST41, Valley of Depression) to bleed (from *Defang Fang*); deeply puncture Baxie (EX-UE8, Eight Holes) to bleed (from *Shibian Liangfang*, i.e., Yi Lao's method). ○ For headache due to Shanghan, needle Hegu (LI4, Union Valley) and Canzhu (BL2, Bamboo Gatherer) (from *Gangmu*). ○ For inability to sweat in Shanghan, select Hegu (LI4, Union Valley) (needle depth five fen; when sweating covers the whole body, withdraw the needle; this point is excellent for inducing sweating); reduce Fuliou (KI7, Returning Stream), Shangqiu (SP5, Market Edge), Wanggu (SI4, Yang Valley), Xiaxi (GB43, Between the Streams), Lidui (ST45, Corner of the Mouth), Laogong (PC8, Palms Palace), Fengchi (GB20, Wind Pool), Yuji (LU10, Fish Border), Jingqu (LU8, Jing-River), and Neiting (ST44, Within the Court); all Ying-Spring points of the twelve meridians can be punctured (from *Gangmu*). ○ For excessive sweating in Shanghan accompanied by inability to open the eyes, reduce Neiting (ST44, Within the Court), Hegu (LI4, Union Valley), and Fuliou (KI7, Returning Stream) (from *Gangmu*). ○ For headache due to Shanghan: Taiyang syndrome, puncture Wangu (GB12, Complete Bone) and Jinggu (BL64, Jing-Bone); Yangming syndrome, puncture Hegu (LI4, Union Valley) and Chongyang (ST42, Restoring Yang); Shaoyang syndrome, puncture Yangchi (TE4, Yang Pool), Qiuxu (GB40, Gaping Void), Fengfu (GV16, Wind Mansion), and Fengchi (GB20, Wind Pool) (from *Yunqi Zi*). ○ For chest binding (Jie Xiong) due to Shanghan, first have the patient rub the left side of the exact painful spot below the heart cartilage. Then, use a fine needle to puncture the left ZhiGou (TE6, Branching Trough) acupoint, followed by the left JianShi (PC5, Intercourse Guard) acupoint, named "Double Guan Puncture". Next, puncture the left Xingjian (LR2, Moving Between) acupoint; left-sided chest binding will be immediately effective. Apply the same method to the right side. Instruct the patient to breathe slowly, retain the needle for a moment, and it will heal instantly (from *Gangmu*). ○ For chest pain due to Shanghan, select Qimen (LR14, Chest Gate) and Daling (PC7, Great Palace) (from *Gangmu*). ○ For hypochondriac pain due to Shanghan, select ZhiGou (TE6, Branching Trough) and Yanglingquan (GB34, Yang Mound Spring) (from *Gangmu*). ○ For abdominal pain due to Yin syndrome in Shanghan, moxa the tip of the outer edge of the little toe, three cones on each side; males on the left, females on the right (from *Huichun Ji*). ○ For critical Yin poison in Shanghan where medicinal herbs are ineffective, quickly moxa the umbilicus (Shenzhong, CV8) three hundred cones, and also moxa Qihai (CV6, Sea of Qi) and Guanyuan (CV4, Gate of Origin) two to three hundred cones each, until the hands and feet become warm (from *Benshi Fang*). ○ Another method: When Yin syndrome is extreme and the penis retracts, hold it firmly, place a moxa cone the size of a mung bean directly on the urethral orifice, and moxa three cones; the penis will extend (from *Huichun Ji*). ○ For cold extremities due to Shanghan, select Dadu (SP2, Great Metropolis) (needle depth one fen). ○ For absence of pulse in all six positions due to Shanghan, select Fuliou (KI7, Returning Stream) (tonification greatly restores the pulse); Hegu (LI4, Union Valley), Zhongji (CV3, Central Pole), ZhiGou (TE6, Branching Trough) (needle depth one cun half; this point harmonizes pulse arrest), Jueque (CV14, Pericardium Mu-Point) (needle depth two cun three fen), and Qichong (ST30, Qi Rush) (moxa seven cones, from *Gangmu*). ○ For recurrent fever after heat subsides in Shanghan, select Fengmen (BL12, Wind Gate), Hegu (LI4, Union Valley), Xingjian (LR2, Moving Between), and Jiegu (GB39, Bone Gap) (from *Yunqi Zi*). ○ The Fifty-Nine Acupoints for treating heat diseases: Five rows of five points on the head are used to dissipate rebellious heat from all Yang meridians. The central row refers to Shangxing (GV23, Upper Star), Xinhui (GV22, Confluence of Fontanelles), Qiding (GV21, Frontal Vertex), Baihui (GV20, Hundred Convergences), and Houding (GV19, Posterior Vertex). The lateral sides refer to Chengguang (BL9, Receiving Light), Tongtian (BL7, Communicating Heaven), Luoque (BL8, Connecting Back), Yuzhen (BL9, Jade Pillow), and Tianzhu (BL10, Heavenly Pillar). The further lateral sides refer to Linqidao (GB15, Approaching Light), Mucuang (GB16, Eye Window), Zhengying (GB17, Correctly Nourishing), Chengling (GB18, Supporting Spirit), and Naokong (GB19, Brain Hollow). ○ Dashu (BL11, Greater Thigh), Ying Shu (Zhongfu LU1, Lung Front-Mu), Quepen (ST12, Missing Basin), and Bei Shu (Fengmen BL12, Wind Gate)—these eight points are used to drain heat from the chest. ○ Qijie (ST13, Qi Street), Sanli (ST36, Three Li), Shangjuxu (ST37, Upper Great Deficiency), and Xiaguxu (ST39, Lower Great Deficiency)—these eight points are used to drain heat from the stomach. ○ Yunmen (LU2, Cloud Gate), Goubu (shoulder joint area, likely referring to Jianyu LI15 or similar), Weizhong (BL40, Center of the Crease), and Suikong (Yaoshu GV2, Spine Hollow)—these eight points are used to drain heat from the four limbs. ○ The five points beside the Five Zang Back-Shu points—these ten points are used to drain heat from the Five Zang organs (Ying Shu refers to Zhongfu LU1; Bei Shu refers to Fengmen BL12; Goubu refers to Jianyu LI15; Suikong refers to Yaoshu GV2; from *Neijing*). ○ There are nine conditions of Heat Disease where acupuncture is contraindicated: 1. No sweating, redness of the cheekbones, and hiccups indicate death. 2. Diarrhea with severe abdominal fullness indicates death. 3. Unclear vision with unceasing heat indicates death. 4. Fever with abdominal fullness in the elderly and infants indicates death. 5. No sweating, vomiting, and hematochezia indicate death. 6. Ulceration of the tongue root with unceasing heat indicates death. 7. Cough with epistaxis, no sweating, or sweating that does not reach the feet indicates death. 8. Marrow heat indicates death. 9. Fever with spasms indicates death. Spasms involve opisthotonos, convulsions, and trismus (from *Lingshu*).
