If men or women suffer from lateral or frontal headaches, one must first examine whether the heat pathogen is severe. If heat is severe, administer Shuangjie San (Double Release Powder) for two to three doses; after bowel movements are unblocked, administer Chuanxiong Chatiao San (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Tea-Regulating Powder) with added cooling agents, and apply Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill) as an eye drop. For cold pain, use Sangpiaoxiao Jiudiao San (Mantis Egg-case Wine-Regulated Powder); after bowel movements are unblocked, treat primarily with Chuanxiong San (Ligusticum Powder) and Shenqing San (Spirit-Clearing Powder), applying Qingliang San (Cooling Powder) mixed with a little Bingpian (Borneol) and Jiangfen (Ginger powder); this method is invariably effective.
Redness and halos around the Wulun (black cornea/pupil area), accompanied by stinging pain and floating turbidity, indicate Liver Heat. The treatment method involves using Jiudiao Xigan San (Wine-Regulated Liver-Washing Powder) added with Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), or alternatively Xiegan San (Liver-Draining Powder) or Xiugan San (Liver-Mending Powder); for recovery, use Shengdihuang San (Rehmannia Root Powder); apply Qingliang San (Cooling Powder) intermittently with Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill).
Clear tears flowing from the eyes, with dry yellow discoloration surrounding the eyeballs, indicate Liver Deficiency. The treatment method uses Zhilei Bugan San (Tear-Stopping Liver-Nourishing Powder), applied with Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill); subsequently, take Bushen Wan (Kidney-Tonifying Pill). This follows the principle of "nourishing the mother to benefit the child" (tonifying Kidney Water to nourish Liver Wood).
Dilated pupils with pale white color and deviation indicate Kidney Deficiency. The prescription involves taking Bushen Wan (Kidney-Tonifying Pill), Bushen Mingmu Wan (Kidney-Tonifying Vision-Improving Pill), and Zhujing Wan (Scenery-Residing Pill), applied with Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill). Internal administration should be frequent, while external application should be sparse.
Shriveled, small pupils or those with slight yellow discoloration indicate Kidney Heat. The treatment method begins with Wuxie Tang (Five-Draining Decoction) and wind-dispersing agents; for recovery, use Bushen Mingmu Wan (Kidney-Tonifying Vision-Improving Pill), which is highly effective with long-term use.
Blue-green pupils with white eyelids, itching, clear tears, without redness or pain, is termed Fengyan (Wind Eye). The treatment method involves taking Qianghuo Chufeng Tang (Notopterygium Wind-Dispersing Decoction), applying Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill) alternating with Erba Dan (Two-Eight Pill), adding ginger powder for efficacy.
Protruding Wulun (cornea/pupil area), hard eyelids, red pupils, and purulent tearing with wet discharge, where internal heat causes pain, is termed Reyan (Heat Eye). The treatment method uses Shuangjie San (Double Release Powder) added with cooling purgatives; once pupil pain subsides, use Shengdihuang San (Rehmannia Root Powder), applying Qingliang San (Cooling Powder) intermittently with Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill), adjusted according to individual conditions.
Cloudy eyes resembling tears, swollen and soft eyelids, upper obstruction, and sour grit with slight redness is termed Qiyan (Qi Eye). Take Sangpiaoxiao Jiudiao San (Mantis Egg-case Wine-Regulated Powder), followed by Mingmu Liuqi Yin (Vision-Improving Qi-Flowing Drink) and Danggui Tang (Angelica Decoction).
If wind and heat coexist, itching and floating redness occur; if wind and qi collide, itching, astringency, and dullness ensue. Apply Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill) alternating with Erba Dan (Two-Eight Pill), and take Qianghuo Chufeng Tang (Notopterygium Wind-Dispersing Decoction).
Blood heat aggregation generates conditions such as Yinfu Sumou (excessive skin growth), Honglv (red filaments), and Touzhen (Stye). Treat internally with Xiepi Tang (Spleen-Draining Decoction) and Xixin Tang (Heart-Draining Decoction), and externally apply Qingliang San (Cooling Powder). If Yinfu Sumou exists, wash until flat, then stop washing.
Chronic eye heat compounded by wind-cold invasion results in Chi Lan (red erosion). Apply Qingliang San (Cooling Powder), take Xixin Tang (Heart-Draining Decoction) and Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder) internally, and wash with Mian Guo San (Cotton-Wrapped Powder) for rapid effect.
Redness without pain in the eyes, causing pain only when phlegm-fluids stagnate, is treated with Banxia Erchen Tang (Pinellia Two-Aged Decoction); after two to three doses, switch to Mingmu Liuqi Yin (Vision-Improving Qi-Flowing Drink), without external eye drops.
Liver Qi stagnation combined with heat causes photophobia. Take Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder) for two to three doses with Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), followed by Mimenghua San (Mimosa Flower Powder) for five to seven doses, focusing on Kidney tonification, and apply Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill) mixed with Qingliang San (Cooling Powder); heavy medications should not be used initially.
Whites of the eyes with redness or red veins indicate heat in the Lung. Take Xifei Tang (Lung-Washing Decoction), drink Chu re yin (Heat-Removing Drink) and Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder), and apply Qingliang Yao (Cooling Medicine) and Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill).
Scabs-like spots on the upper eyelid, lower lid, or corners of the eyes indicate heat in the Spleen. Treatment involves Xiepi Tang (Spleen-Draining Decoction), Xiepi Chu re yin (Spleen-Draining Heat-Removing Drink), and Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill), suitable for washing or dropping. Apply Qingliang San (Cooling Powder); for tear films, apply Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill).
For wind pathogens, disperse them: add ginger powder to Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill). For heat, apply Qingliang San (Cooling Powder). For qi stagnation, regulate it by intermittently applying the aforementioned medicines. For wind, use Fangfeng San (Saposhnikovia Powder) or Tongsheng San (which is Shuangjie San/Double Release Powder), followed by Qianghuo Chufeng Tang (Notopterygium Wind-Dispersing Decoction). For heat, use Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder) and Xiugan San (Liver-Mending Powder). For qi stagnation, take Liuqi Yin (Qi-Flowing Drink) and Huang [missing character] Tang.
Bai Xian Yulin (White Depression Fish-Scale) syndrome, often due to excess in Liver and Kidney with blood deficiency leading to depression, is treated by taking Jiudiao San (Wine-Regulated Powder) for two doses, then alternating Chan Hua San (Cicada Flower Powder) and Mimenghua San (Mimosa Flower Powder) for efficacy. Apply Erba Dan (Two-Eight Pill) mixed with milk, intermittently with Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill).
Protruding high eyes or spiral-pointed corneal protrusion are dangerous and severe conditions. Another method to flatten them involves puncturing with a Feng Zhen (Sharp Needle) to a depth of three fen, applying Feng Shi (Bird Droppings) to the puncture site to attack poison with poison, or using Yindan (Yin Pill) for application. First, take Yujin Jiudiao San (Curcuma Wine-Regulated Powder) for four to five doses before needle insertion; this is the method for flattening and can restore vision in blind cases.
Another condition involves progressive extreme itching inside the eye over years. The secret saying states: all pain indicates excess, all itching indicates deficiency. Eye diseases with swelling and orbital bone involvement are caused by phlegm-fluids. The treatment uses Mingmu Liuqi Yin (Vision-Improving Qi-Flowing Drink) added with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), decocted with two slices of ginger; take continuously for four to five doses to eliminate pain. Additionally, Erchen Dan (Two-Aged Pills) can be used for application. Treatment depends on severity and the physician's judgment.
