On May 26, 2001, the patient was admitted to Jiaxing Maternal and Child Health Hospital due to "amenorrhea for 3 months, lower abdominal distension and pain for 3 months," with hospitalization number 0044831. Color Doppler ultrasound examination showed: multiple uterine fibroids, heterogeneous solid masses in bilateral adnexa accompanied by ascites. Cytological examination of punctured ascites found cancer cells. Diagnosis: Stage III ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps. During surgery on June 2, soybean-sized nodules were observed on the liver surface. The first course of chemotherapy was administered on June 6. On August 13, 2001, the patient underwent a second cytoreductive surgery. Among the sent lymph nodes, left obturator 0/3, left deep femoral 0/3, left external iliac 4/6, left iliac fossa 1/1, right iliac fossa 2/8, right external iliac 3/5, right deep femoral 1/4, totaling 11 metastatic lymph nodes. The fourth course of chemotherapy was performed on the 28th. After the sixth course of chemotherapy on November 14, 2001, the white blood cell count was 3.1×10^9/L, with exhaustion of both physical form and spirit; the patient firmly requested discharge. On December 5 of the same year, she came to my clinic requesting Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment.
Ovarian tumors are common gynecological neoplasms, with more than two-thirds of malignant cases occurring in women aged 40-65. Due to the deep location of ovarian tumors within the pelvic cavity, they are asymptomatic in the early stages, and there is a lack of effective early diagnostic and differential methods, leading to most patients being diagnosed at an advanced stage. The five-year survival rate is less than one-quarter, and the mortality rate exceeds the sum of cervical cancer and corpus uteri cancer, making it the most threatening disease among gynecological neoplasms. Ovarian tumors have been recorded in TCM since ancient times. The chapter "Shui Zhang" (Water Swelling) in *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot) states: "Cold initially invades outside the intestines, struggling with Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), preventing Qi from circulating properly. Due to binding and attachment, evil Qi accumulates internally, causing abnormal growths to form. Initially, they are as large as a chicken egg, gradually increasing in size until they resemble a cup. Over time, they become detached from normal tissue structure and feel firm upon palpation." This belongs to the TCM categories of "Zheng Jia" (Masses) and "Ji Ju" (Accumulations). When this patient was admitted to Jiaxing Maternal and Child Health Hospital, cancer cells had already widely metastasized. The two surgeries and chemotherapy were palliative treatments. Given her extreme physical weakness, decreased white blood cell count, and inability to tolerate further chemotherapy, she sought TCM treatment.
Symptoms presented: emaciation and fatigue, pale complexion and dull spirit, palpitations and shortness of breath, lack of physical strength, spontaneous sweating upon exertion, dry mouth without desire to drink, poor appetite, occasional nausea and vomiting, epigastric and abdominal distension and fullness, difficult urination and defecation, pale red tongue with ecchymosis on the sides, greasy coating, and deep, fine, and choppy pulse.
Treatment principle: Support healthy Qi and consolidate the root, soften hardness and eliminate tumors, strengthen Spleen and promote dampness drainage.
Prescription: Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb) 12g, Fuling (Poria) 12g, Chao Cangzhu (Stir-fried Atractylodes Rhizome) 12g, Jiang Xia (Ginger-processed Pinellia Tuber) 12g, Chao Sanxian (Stir-fried Three Digestive Herbs) 12g each, Zhike (Aurantium Fruit) 12g, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 12g, Ezhu (Curcuma Zedoary Rhizome) 10g. One live Toad (Bufo bufo gargarizans) was taken daily, cleaned, and decocted together with the herbs. Seven doses.
Second visit on December 13: After taking seven doses, the greasy coating has receded, dampness is resolved, appetite has significantly increased, epigastric and abdominal distension has disappeared, and urination and defecation are smooth. The excess pathogenic factors on the branch level have been eliminated. Treatment should continue to support healthy Qi and consolidate the root, invigorate Blood and eliminate masses. Modified Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder).
Prescription: Shengshaishen (Sun-dried Ginseng Root) 9g, Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 12g, Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry) 10g, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 12g, Ezhu (Curcuma Zedoary Rhizome) 12g, Jiaogulan (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum) 30g, Chuanlianzi (Evodia Fruit) 12g, Banzhilian (Scutellaria Barbata Herb) 30g, Sheqiecao (Hedyotis Diffusa Herb) 30g. One live Toad daily, thirty doses.
Follow-up after one month: Liver function and blood indices were all normal. All symptoms improved significantly; she could manage household chores, only occasionally feeling soreness and pain in both shoulders. Add Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig) 30g, continue taking.
Diagnosis on October 15, 2002: "After taking TCM for 10 months, complexion is lustrous, body is robust, no discomfort, weight increased by over 20 jin (approx. 10 kg)."
Admitted again on November 10 for radiotherapy.
Treatment process: Left supraclavicular area and left internal mammary area treated with 60Co + 10 MeV electron beam, DT 53Gy each. Additionally, CMF regimen chemotherapy was administered for a total of 8 courses.
Review on May 28, 2002, three and a half years post-left breast cancer surgery: CT report indicated multiple metastatic tumors in both lungs. Chest X-ray diagnosis: Post-left breast cancer surgery, nodules in both lungs, metastasis considered first. [Text fragment missing context] able to perform general labor. Ultrasound examination showed: uterus not detected in the pelvic cavity, no masses seen in the pelvic cavity, no space-occupying lesions in the pelvic cavity.
Modern research confirms that toad extracts can inhibit the respiration of human ovarian adenocarcinoma cells in vitro; they can elevate white blood cell counts, enhance the supportive function of the reticuloendothelial system, eliminate toxic and side effects of chemotherapy, and consolidate chemotherapy efficacy; they can also promote diuresis and reduce tumors, resolving various conditions of stasis, congestion, and obstruction, such as accumulated toxins, masses, and distension. Using toad in prescriptions combined with TCM syndrome differentiation and treatment is effective for treating ovarian cancer after chemotherapy.
Live Toad decoction for treating lung metastasis after breast cancer surgery and chemoradiotherapy.
Lin Xianguai, Female, 45 years old, residing in Houyangchen Village, Haiyou Town, Sanmen County. Hospitalization No.: 95620. Outpatient No.: 2026446.
The patient was admitted to Zhejiang Cancer Hospital for surgical treatment on October 16, 1998, and discharged on November 9 with the diagnosis: Left simple breast carcinoma.
Treatment process: Preoperative chemotherapy with CMF regimen 8 days prior (CTX × 0.6g/d, MTX × 30mg/d, 5-FU 0.75g/d). On October 29, radical left mastectomy was performed under general anesthesia, with clearance of axillary upper, middle, and lower groups of lymphatic fatty tissue. On the fifth day post-operation, CMF regimen chemotherapy was administered again. Post-operative pathology report: Small amount of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma tissue (3/11) residual in left breast scar tissue, foreign body giant cell reaction to suture material. Pathological staging: Stage IIa.
Admitted again on June 3. Discharged on June 25 with diagnosis: Lung metastasis after left breast cancer surgery and chemoradiotherapy.
Treatment process: After admission, NP regimen was administered once every 4 days. Post-operatively, there were discomforts such as nausea and muscle soreness. Re-examination of blood routine showed: White blood cells 1700/mm³, neutrophils 23.4%.
X-ray report on June 24: Pulmonary nodule foci, metastasis considered first.
The attending physician wrote in the discharge summary under discharge condition: Patient has low white blood cell count, highly susceptible to infection, severe cases may endanger life.
Repeatedly told the patient's family: Do not discharge. The patient and family still firmly requested discharge.
The patient had unspoken hardships: Breast cancer had metastasized to both lungs. Each chemotherapy injection cost 1200 yuan. Hospitalization for half a month cost another 15,000+ yuan. Since falling ill, treatment expenses alone exceeded 70,000 yuan. As a farmer in a mountain village, she could no longer gather money for continued treatment. Chemotherapy caused such low white blood cell counts, nausea, vomiting, inability to eat even rice grains for half a month, insomnia all night, unbearable whole-body pain, truly living worse than death. At this point, the patient was pessimistic and desperate, ignoring the resident physician's advice, and left the ward. That day, her husband found a relative working as a doctor at Zhejiang First Hospital to discuss solutions. The relative told them: Waiting for death is not a solution; you had better find Dr. Chen in the TCM Department of the Provincial Cancer Hospital; perhaps there is hope.
On June 26, 2002, the patient came to my clinic: Extremely emaciated and weak, painful expression, pale complexion, poor sleep, dull pain in the anterior chest, worse at night, occasional cough, poor appetite with nausea, pale red tongue with greasy coating, fine and rapid pulse.
Treatment plan: Strengthen Spleen, calm Spirit, support healthy Qi and eliminate tumors. Modified Ershen Yixian Tang (Two Ginsengs and One Immortal Decoction).
Prescription: Ershen (Two Ginsengs) 30g, Peilan (Eupatorium Fortunei Herb) 12g, Zhu Ling (Polyporus) and Fuling (Poria) 12g each, Tiandong (Asparagus Tuber) 12g, Muli (Oyster Shell) 30g (decocted first), Xiangbei (Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb) 12g, Gualoupi (Trichosanthes Peel) 12g. One live Toad daily, cleaned of entrails, decocted together.
Diagnosis on October 15, 2002: After taking the previous prescription for over three months, all symptoms alleviated; she could do housework and occasionally work in the fields, but could not sustain it for long. The patient stated: The toad is really hard to eat; when drinking, the fishy smell rushes up, causing nausea and difficulty swallowing, and even diarrhea. For the sake of survival, I had to force myself down. After taking it for a while, I gradually adapted, and physical strength gradually increased. Coming to the hospital this time for a re-examination to see if the lung metastasis foci had enlarged or shrunk.
On October 16, the patient received the X-ray film (No. 125805) report. X-ray findings: Both lungs basically clear, no definite space-occupying lesions, heart and diaphragm unremarkable. X-ray diagnosis: No definite space-occupying lesions in both lungs.
The couple looked at the report, seeing that the metastatic tumors in both lungs had disappeared after TCM treatment, hardly believing their eyes. They asked the doctors and nurses nearby, who confirmed that the lung masses had disappeared. They immediately ran back to ask me: Dr. Chen, the X-ray report says the lung metastasis foci have disappeared, is this true?
Continue prescription to consolidate efficacy.
Prescription: Ershen (Two Ginsengs) 30g, Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris Spike) 30g, Muli (Oyster Shell) 30g (decocted first), Zhu Ling (Polyporus) and Fuling (Poria) 12g each (boiled), Xiangbei (Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb) 12g, Tiandong (Asparagus Tuber) 12g, Gualoupi (Trichosanthes Peel) 12g. One live Toad daily, decocted together.
Patients suffering from serious illnesses often hope for a miraculous cure to save their lives when in despair. Blessed by the Toad Immortal, another patient with lung metastasis after breast cancer surgery and chemoradiotherapy had her lung metastasis foci disappear after treatment with live Toad decoction.

Single herb Live Toad for treating lung cancer.
Zhang XX, Male, 50 years old. On October 20, 1997, due to cough with excessive phlegm, cancer cells were found via biopsy at Zhejiang First Hospital. Because the patient did not accept treatment, by October 1998, when coming to our hospital (Outpatient No. 167703), chest X-ray report showed: Peripheral carcinoma of the right lung.
Symptoms presented: Emaciated body, gray-black lusterless complexion, thin red tongue with thin yellow coating. Syndrome belongs to heat toxin and blood stasis binding in the Lung. Treatment principle: Clear heat and resolve toxins, reduce swelling and relieve pain. Prescription:
One live Toad daily, cleaned of entrails, add a little yellow wine, stew for juice, divide into three servings.
In the first few days, mild abdominal pain and diarrhea occurred after ingestion. Later, strange itching all over the body, sensation of foreign objects burrowing and crawling outwards through the skin. Mental state gradually improved, appetite greatly increased, all symptoms cured. Upon re-examination at the hospital in May 1999, she looked like a different person, ruddy complexion, weight increased by 20 jin (approx. 10 kg), chest X-ray re-examination showed tumor mass shrank from 8×6 cm to 4×3 cm. Follow-up to date, she has lived peacefully with the tumor for nearly four years.
Commentary: The patient was a 'Five Guarantees' household member, diagnosed with lung cancer but without funds for treatment, resigned to fate. Delayed for a year until the disease reached a critical stage. At the brink of death, the single herb live Toad had the power to revive the dying.

Commentary: The average survival period for liver cancer patients is very short, only a few months. Live Toad decoction for treating liver cancer extended the survival period and improved quality of life.
Live Toad decoction for treating liver cancer with renal metastasis.
Jiang XX, Male, 45 years old. In August 1997, due to pain under the right hypochondrium, examination at Zhejiang Second Hospital showed Alpha-fetoprotein radioimmunoassay >1000 ng/ml. CT report: "Low-density mass shadow seen in the right lobe of the liver, involving the right kidney, diameter approx. 11×10 cm." Diagnosis: "Primary liver cancer with renal metastasis." After ineffective local treatment, came to our hospital for treatment (Outpatient No. 0021921). Symptoms presented: Dry and bitter mouth, epigastric and hypochondriac distension and pain, body fatigue and weakness, poor appetite, yellow-red urine and constipation, palpation revealed mass under right hypochondrium approx. 10×12 cm, hard, fixed, uneven surface. Wiry and fine pulse, red tongue, purplish spots on edges, thin yellow coating. Syndrome belongs to Liver Qi stagnation and abundant heat toxin.

Resumed full-time work after 3 months, thereafter adhered to the original formula. After 5 CT re-examinations, the mass did not enlarge, Alpha-fetoprotein radioimmunoassay >1000 ng/ml, lived well with the tumor for 21 months.
Commentary: Primary massive liver cancer with renal metastasis, treated with live Toad decoction, extended the survival period. Won a Santana car in a lottery, paid off medical expenses with plenty left over, yet failed to change old habits, drinking and playing mahjong. "Wealth harms the body, joy begets sorrow," excessive fatigue and alcohol damage to the liver caused disease deterioration and death.
The effective dose of Toad is close to the toxic dose. Generally, those with good efficacy experience toxic reactions, after which most symptoms improve, and body and mind feel relaxed. Long decoction of Toad significantly reduces toxicity; daily dose stewed into juice and taken in divided doses can also alleviate toxic reactions; initial responders react severely, but long-term users gradually adapt. Individual adaptation to Toad dosage varies greatly; some vomit and feel uncomfortable with just one small Toad daily, while others can accept five daily; larger Toads have greater adverse reactions, smaller ones less; Toads from mountain areas have greater toxic reactions than those from ponds, pond environments greater than dry land; darker black Toads have greater toxic reactions than lighter ones; Toads with larger granules on the head and back have greater toxic side effects than those with smaller granules; summer Toads have greater toxic reactions than winter Toads. Clinical application requires continuous exploration and rigorous control of the effective dose.
