For the five conditions of You Ge (Worry Obstruction), Qi Ge (Qi Obstruction), Shi Ge (Food Obstruction), Han Ge (Cold Obstruction), and Yin Ge (Drink Obstruction), the treatment is identical. These are typically caused by sorrow, worry, overthinking, and improper diet. Symptoms may be triggered by consuming cold food or raw vegetables. The condition manifests as distressing fullness in the heart region with difficulty breathing, pain radiating to the spine resembling needle pricks, hardness below the heart (epigastrium) after eating, roughly the size of cotton wool, severe pain inducing vomiting, which brings relief. Food fails to descend; in severe cases, there is coldness in the hands and feet, rebellious Qi causing cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Treat with Jiu Wu Wu Ge Wan (Nine-Ingredient Five-Obstruction Pill).
Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, remove heart) 3 liang, Shu Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, sweat out moisture) 3 liang, Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, remove heart) 3 liang, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) 5 liang, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed) 1 liang, Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 1 liang.
Pulverize and sieve the above herbs, mix with honey to form a slightly moist paste, and store in a covered container. Before meals, take one pill the size of a bullet, hold it in the throat and swallow slowly. Heat should be felt in the throat and chest. When the medicinal effect subsides, take another pill. Administer three to four times during the day and one to two times at night. Recovery occurs after seven days of medication, and full health returns within twenty days. If holding in the throat is not feasible, divide one large pill into two smaller ones and swallow completely. Only during summer preparation should Mai Men Dong, Gan Cao, and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) be added in increased amounts; the rest remains unchanged. This formula is miraculous and excellent.
Shu Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) should be roasted in a copper vessel over fire until extremely hot, then placed on the ground. Put the pepper back into the vessel and stir thoroughly. After a moment, moisture will appear (sweat out). Then grind and mix uniformly. The heat of the pepper helps remove its toxicity, not to induce heat itself. Avoid consuming Hai Zao (Sargassum Herba), Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage), Zhu Rou (Pork), cold water, Sheng Cong (Raw Scallion), and Sheng Cai (Raw Vegetables). (From *Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 8)
