A-E-Jiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) tastes sweet and salty, is slightly warm in nature, non-toxic, and enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians. It primarily treats wind-pathogen hyperactivity causing flaccidity and pain in limbs and joints; excessive fire leading to deficiency of Metal (Lung), manifesting as wheezing, coughing, and hemoptysis; it tonifies consumptive diseases, treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, nourishes the Kidney and calms the fetus, benefits Qi, and stops dysentery. The genuine product is clear as water and brittle, breaking easily. Shen Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) serves as a guiding drug; it is incompatible with Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). It should be stir-fried with Ge Fen (Calcitum) until it forms beads for use.
Note: A-E-Jiao is made from the skin of black donkeys. Black corresponds to Water and specifically enters the Kidney meridian, where it can subdue Fire. This aligns with the principle that restraining heat prevents the generation of wind, thus making it suitable for entering the Liver meridian. Furthermore, when Fire is restrained, Metal (Lung) is not invaded, so it is also suitable for entering the Lung meridian. The well at Dong-E County originates from the Ji River; its nature is swift and downward-flowing, clear and heavy. When used for decoction... [text cuts off]
Xiong Dan (Bear Bile) tastes bitter, is cold in nature, non-toxic, and enters the Gallbladder meridian. It primarily treats epidemic febrile diseases with intense heat transforming into jaundice; pediatric conditions involving phlegm-heat obstruction, chills, convulsions, epilepsy, and infantile malnutrition; it kills parasites and disperses toxicity, and can be applied externally to treat malignant sores and hemorrhoids. The genuine product, when stirred into water, remains intact like white silk; it is incompatible with Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) and Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix).
Note: Xiong Dan enters the Gallbladder meridian, following the principle of similarity. Its efficacy in clearing fire and calming convulsions surpasses that of other animal bile.
Lei Gong stated: After collection, place it in a refining vessel. For every jin (approx. 500g) of Xiong Dan, add fourteen raw Sichuan peppercorns (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), refine to remove dregs, and store together with the peppercorns in a bottle for future use.
Wa Na Qi (Otter Testis/Gonad) tastes salty, is extremely hot in nature, non-toxic, and enters the Spleen and Mingmen (Gate of Life) meridians. It primarily assists the Kidney in replenishing essence, tonifies the Middle Jiao and benefits Qi, treats "ghost qi" and corpse transmission (highly contagious tuberculosis-like diseases), nocturnal emissions with dream intercourse, blood stasis accumulation, and abdominal pain. The genuine product causes a sleeping dog to jump and run in fright when placed nearby, and does not freeze when put in water. Soak in wine for one night, wrap in paper, roast over gentle heat until crisp, then finely chop and pound for use.
Note: Wa Na Qi is a salty and hot substance, originally entering the Mingmen to tonify Fire. The warmth preferred by the Spleen is precisely the heat of Wa Na Qi, so it also enters the Spleen. Its function of assisting Yang ranks supreme among various preparations. It is currently produced in Dengzhou and Laizhou, which is the testis of the sea dog (sea lion/otter). Its head resembles a pig, its tail resembles a fish, and it has only two feet. Its price is exceptionally high. There are many fakes on the market, requiring careful discrimination.
Lei Gong stated: Before use, one must carefully identify fakes. There is an aquatic beast in the sea called Shui Wu Long (Water Black Dragon); fishermen collect its kidneys to pass them off as Wa Na Qi. Mixing this into medicinal preparations may cause errors during compounding. This substance is unique: there is a pair, consisting of two thin layers of skin wrapping a丸-shaped core, with yellowish fleshy hair on the skin. One orifice produces three stalks. Stored in a container, it remains moist and fresh year-round. Placed on a dog's head, if the dog jumps in fright as if mad, it is genuine. It must be soaked in wine for one day, then wrapped in paper and roasted over slight heat until fragrant, then finely chopped and pounded separately.
