Lei Gong stated: When using rhinoceros horn, do not use "Nu" (servant) rhino horn, female rhino horn, rhino horn from a rhinoceros suffering from edema, horn from a rhinoceros with contracted limbs, lower part of the horn, shallow-water rhino horn, or horn lacking moisture. One should select the superior quality that is black in color, has a rough and wrinkled texture, shows cracking, yet appears glossy and moist.
During processing, first shave the horn into flakes, place them in a mortar, and pound until fine. Then transfer to a bowl and grind ten thousand times before incorporating it into medicinal preparations.
Pregnant women are forbidden to take rhinoceros horn, as it can dissipate fetal qi.
When processing all types of horns, salt is strictly prohibited.
Lei Gong stated: When using tiger eyes, one must know the source of the collector and inquire about the details: there are males and females, old and young, and those killed by poison. Only tiger eyes from tigers that died naturally from poisoning should not be used, as they pose a risk of harming humans.
To process tiger eyes, first soak them in raw sheep blood overnight. Drain them out, and dry them over a mild fire. Pound them into powder. After other herbs have been processed, take the appropriate amount for combination.
Lei Gong stated: When using Que Su (a specific part of sparrow excrement), do not use ordinary sparrow feces. If the sparrow's mouth is yellow and it has not mated, its excrement is called "Su". If the base is pointed upwards, it is termed female Que Su; if both ends are round, it is male Que Su. Women should use male Que Su, and men should use female Que Su.
Upon collection, first remove the parts at both ends where Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi) grows; these should not be used. Then, grind it in a mortar into a powder. Soak it overnight in Licorice Decoction (Gancao Tang). Pour off the clear upper layer of licorice water completely, and dry it by baking for future use.
Lei Gong stated: When using [the unspecified herb], only collect those weighing one jin.
Each time processing, first wipe off the hair on the meat; remove the claws and intestines, but keep the wings, meat, feet, and beak. Then soak it in wine overnight, drain it out, and apply the natural juice of Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing) to coat it. Roast it until dry before use.
For each processing batch, take one specimen weighing one jin as the unit, using five liang of natural Huangjing juice as the standard.
Lei Gong stated: There are four types of bee nests when used medicinally: one is Ge Feng Ke (Leather Bee Nest), two is Shi Feng Ke (Stone Bee Nest), three is Du Feng Ke (Solitary Bee Nest), and four is Cao Feng Ke (Grass Bee Nest). The large Ge Feng Ke has a circumference of one to two zhang and grows on the trunk of large trees. It contains 620 small internal compartments; larger compartments may house up to 1,240 bees. This nest adheres to the wood via Qigu Wood Juice, the cover is made of cow dung foam, and the partitions are leaf veins. The Shi Feng Ke is found only on human roofs, size like a fist, dark grey-black in color, containing 21 green bees, or sometimes only 14. Its cover is stone scurf, the adhesive is Qigu Wood Juice, and the partition is bamboo. Next is the Du Feng Ke, size like a goose egg, with thick skin, greyish-yellow in color. It contains the flesh and wings of small bees, housing only one bee inside, sized like a small stone swallow. If humans or horses are stung by it, death occurs immediately.
When processing Ge Feng Ke, first steam it mixed with Vigna angularis (Azuki Bean) and Zhen Tou Cao (Pillow Grass) from Si hour to Wei hour. Remove it, discard the beans and grass, sun-dry it, and then use.
