Lei Gong said: The Heihu (Bufo melanostictus, black tiger toad) has a small black body with small spots on its beak and feet.
If one wishes to use the Heihu, combine the head, tail, skin, and claws, dry them in the shade, soak them in wine for three days, strain them out, bake them until dry, and then use them.
Lei Gong said: In general usage, do not use those that are green, yellow, or grayish; only use those that are white like silver.
To prepare it, first dig a pit about one chi and two cun deep under the eaves of a house, place snake skin at the bottom, leave it overnight, and retrieve it at Mao hour (5-7 AM). Soak it in vinegar for one shi (two hours), roast it over fire until dry, and then use it.
Lei Gong said: In general usage, do not use those that are multicolored, nor those that are large with bristles growing on their bodies, nor those that are thin and small. None of these above are suitable for use. To identify the true specimen, look for those found near nets on the west side of the house, with a small body, large hindquarters, and containing grayish-yellow pus inside the abdomen.
When using, remove the head and feet, grind into a paste, and add to the medicinal mixture.
Lei Gong said: After harvesting, soak the earthworms (Qiu Yin) in rice water overnight. Strain them out the next morning, soak them in non-ashy wine for one day, strain them out at night, bake until dry, and cut finely. Take Sichuan pepper (Shu Jiao), glutinous rice, and the cut earthworms, and simmer them together. When the glutinous rice is cooked, remove the rice and pepper, select the clean worms, and use them. For every two liang of preparation, use one part rice and one part pepper as the standard.
Lei Gong said: Do not use the thousand-legged worm (Peripatus, mahu chong), which resembles the centipede but has white flesh on its head and a pointed face and beak. If mistakenly used and held, its foul odor entering the top of the head can cause death.
To process the centipede (Wu Gong), stir-fry it with wood dust or willow powder in an earthenware vessel until the wood dust turns charred black. Remove the wood dust, scrape off the legs and claws with a bamboo knife, and then use it.
Lei Gong said: One must distinguish between male and female. The male is called "Ge," characterized by rough skin, a large mouth, a small body, and a thick tail. The female is called "Jie," characterized by a pointed mouth, a large body, and a small tail. Men should consume the female, and women should consume the male.
After processing, remove the fleshy hairs from the shell, tail, and abdomen. The toxicity resides in the eyes. After such processing, soak in wine, dry, wrap in two layers of paper, and slowly roast over fire through the paper. When the two layers of paper are dry and thoroughly scorched, remove the paper, store the Gejie in a porcelain vessel, hang it in the corner of the eastern room overnight, and when used, its efficacy will be ten times greater.
Do not damage the tail, as the efficacy lies in the tail.
