A person suffering from sores that do not heal after a year or more is commonly referred to as having "stubborn sores" (Wan Chuang), describing their intractable and difficult-to-treat nature. However, if treated with the correct method, efficacy can be achieved.
Generally, when a person's Qi and Blood are harmonious, sores will definitely not arise; even if they do, they are easy to treat. Therefore, the cause of sores lies in the disharmony of Qi and Blood. This may result from dampness infiltration, heat pathogen invasion, or cold pathogen interaction, leading to Qi stagnation without free flow and Blood stasis without dispersion. When Qi knots in the skin, skin sores arise; when it knots in the muscle, muscle sores arise. If left untreated for a long time, pus and blood remain unclean, giving rise to "worms" (pathological products of rotting flesh and blood or secondary infections).
When the sore opening fails to close, people assume it is caused by worms and administer anti-worm agents. This, however, damages the skin and muscles and depletes Qi and Blood, making them increasingly deficient and unable to cover the whole body. Neglecting the skin and muscles on the exterior makes the sore difficult to heal, thus becoming stubborn. Therefore, treatment should focus on promoting Qi circulation and harmonizing Blood, disregarding the so-called "worms" and toxins. However, since Blood is hard to harmonize and Qi is hard to move, nourishment and tonification are required for success. Essentially, Qi moves freely when tonified, and Blood flows naturally when nourished. The formula used is Jiu Wan Tang (Rescue Stubborn Sores Decoction):
Forsythiae Fructum (Lianqiao) 1 qian, Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) 1 qian, Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) 1 qian, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) 1 liang, Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu) 1 liang, Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi) 1 liang, Astragali Radix (Huangqi) 1 liang, Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) 1 liang, Corni Fructus (Shanyuzi) 5 qian, Poria (Fuling) 5 qian, Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Zhi Banxia) 2 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 3 qian, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) 2 qian.
Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, the sore opening will inevitably swell; do not fear this, as it indicates the medicinal power driving Qi and Blood battling the sore pathogen, which is a sign of rapid healing. After another two doses, pain will cease and itching will begin. After another two doses, itching stops and new flesh grows. After another two doses, scabs form and healing occurs. After another two doses, recurrence will never happen. This formula specifically promotes Blood circulation and Qi movement through tonification. When Qi moves and Blood circulates, where can these "worms" exist? Thus, there is no need to kill worms; the stubborn sores will remove themselves.
Rhyme:
For stubborn sores, use Lianqiao, Chaihu, Fangfeng [1 qian each]; Danggui, Baizhu, Shudi, Maidong [1 liang each]; Shanyuzi, Fuling [5 qian each], Zhi Banxia [2 qian], Gancao [3 qian], Fuzi [2 qian] assist; Two doses cause swelling, four more doses reduce severe itching, continuing for four doses yields extraordinary effects.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Zhuan Shen Tang (Transform Spirit Decoction):
Ginseng Radix (Renshen) 5 qian, Astragali Radix (Huangqi) 5 qian, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) 5 qian, Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) 5 qian, Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi) 5 qian, Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen) 3 qian, Asparagi Radix (Tian dong) 3 qian, Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) 3 qian, Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu) 4 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 2 qian, Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie) 1 qian, Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji) 5 fen, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) 3 fen, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) 3 fen.
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, sensations of pain and itching change; after two doses, severe pain occurs; after several more doses, the sore ulcerates. At this point, remove Fuzi, Fangji, and Cheqianzi, add Corni Fructus (Shanyuzi) 4 qian and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) 2 qian, then take for another four doses to achieve healing.
Rhyme:
Zhuan Shen Tang's efficacy is calculable: Danggui, Renshen, Maidong, Shudi [5 qian each]; Tianhuafen, Tian dong, Cheqianzi [3 qian each], Baizhu [4 qian], Gancao [2 qian], Jingjie [1 qian], Fangji [5 fen]; Fuzi, Chenpi [3 fen each], several doses lead to ulceration; remove Fuzi, Fangji, Cheqianzi, add Shanyuzi, Wuweizi.
Some people develop sores on the inner thigh, closing like a bean but protruding a piece of flesh resembling a mushroom. People think it is caused by worms eating outwardly. Who knows that this is due to Wind-Heat in the Liver Meridian and dry Blood?
Liver Heat generates Wind, which is Internal Wind, not External Wind. However, External Wind feels cool, while Internal Wind seems to harbor Heat. Therefore, External Wind should be dispersed, while Internal Wind should be cleared. But if one clears Wind without nourishing Blood, Heat cannot be resolved, and Wind cannot be pacified. The treatment method must nourish Blood and clear Heat so that Fire does not become dry; once Heat retreats, Wind naturally calms down. How could any sore fail to heal? The formula used is Qing Feng Tang (Clear Wind Decoction):
Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) 1 liang, Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) 2 qian, Ginseng Radix (Renshen) 5 qian, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) 5 qian, Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu) 3 qian, Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) 3 qian, Moutan Cortex (Danpi) 3 qian, Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen) 3 qian, Glehniae Radix (Shashen) 3 qian, Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) 1 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 1 qian, Forsythiae Fructum (Lianqiao) 1 qian.
Decoct in water and take orally for several consecutive doses, and the sore opening will naturally close. This formula nourishes Blood to support the Liver, rather than eliminating flesh to resolve toxins. Why does the sore close and heal? Because sores form due to the exuberance of Liver Wood. Calming the Liver prevents Blood from becoming overly dry; naturally, Wind dissipates and Heat retreats, avoiding spreading disasters. If the Liver is not calmed, and internal Fire-draining herbs and external corrosive methods are used, the "worms" will instead erode the sore flesh internally. The more the flesh is damaged, the weaker the Yuan Qi becomes, leading to unexpected changes that are difficult to rescue.
Rhyme:
Qing Feng Tang uses Baishao 1 liang, Chuanxiong 2 qian, Renshen, Danggui [5 qian each]; Baizhu, Zhizi, Danpi, Tianhuafen, Shashen [3 qian each], Chaihu, Gancao, Lianqiao [1 qian each].
This condition can also be effectively treated with Lian Nei Tang (Contract Interior Decoction):
Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jinyinhua) 1 liang, Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) 1 liang, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) 1 liang, Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu) 5 qian, Poria (Fuling) 5 qian, Raw Gardeniae Fructus (Sheng Zhizi) 3 qian, Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) 1 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 3 qian.
Decoct in water and take for several consecutive doses.
Rhyme:
Lian Nei Tang contains Jinyinhua, Baishao, Danggui [1 liang each], Baizhu, Fuling [5 qian each], Sheng Zhizi [3 qian], Chaihu [1 qian], Gancao [3 qian]; take for three doses, clearing Heat and nourishing Blood to treat stubborn sores miraculously.
