Spinach is cold in nature and slightly toxic. It promotes the free flow of the five Zang organs, unblocks heat in the intestines and stomach, and resolves alcohol toxicity. It is beneficial for those taking Dan Shi (cinnabar and other mineral drugs). For northerners who consume meat and wheat noodles, its effect is neutral; for southerners who consume fish, turtle, water, and rice, it appears cold. It should not be consumed in excess, as it can chill the large and small intestines. Long-term consumption causes weakness in the legs, making walking difficult. It may induce lower back pain and should not be eaten together with "quyu" (a type of fish prone to causing disease or rotten meat). It can induce Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with vomiting and diarrhea. [Jiayou Bencao Supplement]
Spinach is cold in nature and non-toxic. It treats yellowing of the face and eyes, strengthens physical power, relieves fatigue, and when applied externally, treats snake and insect bites. Additionally, applying spinach juice to Ding Zhong (carbuncle swelling) helps expel the root of the toxin. When silkworm moths are hatching, one must absolutely not pick or break spinach, lest the moth larvae turn blue and rot. Women raising silkworms should also avoid eating it. Wild bitter vegetables, after being picked five or six times, become sweeter and smoother than domestic varieties, which is very good. [Jiayou Bencao Supplement]
Spinach is extremely cold in nature, non-toxic, but slightly toxic. It descends hot wind-qi and treats Xiao'er Gu Zheng Re Lao (pediatric bone-steaming consumptive fever). Men should not consume it for a long time, as it may trigger chronic diseases, damage the meridians, blood, and qi, cause coldness and numbness in the feet, injure the waist and kidneys, and diminish facial luster. Those taking Dan Shi (mineral drugs) eat it to reduce the heating power of the stones. It is produced in Haizhou, and also found in Dengzhou, Laizhou, Yizhou, and Mizhou, growing near the sea. It can also resolve heat in the face. [Jiayou Bencao Supplement]
Spinach is neutral in nature and slightly toxic. It tonifies the middle Jiao, directs rebellious Qi downward, regulates Spleen Qi, removes Tou Feng (head wind), and benefits the five Zang organs. Those with Cold Qi should not eat much, as it moves Qi. Those who previously suffered from abdominal coldness will definitely experience abdominal rupture/pain if they eat it. Ash from spinach stems mixed with water can be used to wash clothes, making them white as jade. [Jiayou Bencao Supplement]

"Nourishes Essence and Qi, treats E Chuang Jie Xuan (malignant sores, scabies, tinea), Feng Chuang Bai Dian (wind sores, vitiligo), and Da Feng (leprosy-like disease). Stir-fry until cooked, take with wine. Although beneficial, excessive consumption may reduce medicinal efficacy. Meng Shen." [Ben Cao Gang Mu]
