Purple indicates heat, red indicates cold damage (Shanghan), green indicates fright syndrome (Jingfeng), white indicates gan syndrome (Ganji), black indicates evil invasion (Zhong'e), and yellow indicates spleen deficiency with accumulation. When examining, for girls observe the right hand, for boys observe the left hand; careful distinction is required in all cases.
When observing a child's facial complexion, one must clearly distinguish the five colors before proceeding with treatment.
There are seven manifestations of heat syndromes in children: reddish-red face, constipation, yellow urine, unquenchable thirst, rapid and forced breathing, red and bloodshot eyes, and dry and withered nostrils. These seven symptoms all belong to excess-heat patterns; harmonizing and cooling methods are appropriate, while warming and tonifying medicines should not be used.
There are seven manifestations of cold syndromes in children: pale white face, white and clear stools, abdominal distension due to deficiency, bluish-green eye whites, vomiting and diarrhea without fever, cold calves and shins, and sleeping with eyes partially open (sleeping with exposed pupils). These symptoms all belong to deficiency-cold patterns; warming and tonifying methods are appropriate, and cold-cooling medicines must be strictly avoided. Remember this well and study it thoroughly to avoid misprescribing and causing harm.
For both acute and chronic fright syndromes (Jingfeng), the various prescriptions listed separately in Volume 10 under "Pediatrics - Fright Syndrome" are the most appropriate. Having been repeatedly verified as effective and thoroughly explained previously, no further repetition is necessary here. Herein, additional empirical prescriptions and external treatment methods are supplemented for symptomatic treatment and reference.
Body heat, red face, profuse phlegm, sudden traction and spasms of hands and feet, inability to cry, and upward deviation of the eyeballs. Use one live clam, pry it open with the foot of a silver hairpin, drip ginger juice into it, place the clam facing upwards, and after a short while, water will flow out. Collect it in a porcelain cup, warm it by steaming in hot water, and administer orally for immediate recovery.
Another prescription: Wash fresh Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu), pound it thoroughly including the roots, and squeeze out two to thirty spoons of juice. Pound fresh old Zingiberis Rhizoma (Laojiang) to extract several spoons of juice, mix evenly, warm by steaming in hot water, and administer orally for recovery.
Furthermore, when phlegm-saliva obstructs the throat with a sound like roaring tides, it is called "phlegm-tide" (Xianchao). Calcinate Mingyanshi (Venus Flycatcher Stone/Jinxing Mengshi) until fine, mix with fresh Menthae Haplocalycis Herba juice (Shengbohe), add a little Mel (Baimi), warm by steaming in water, and take orally. It can descend phlegm-saliva; the medicine wraps the phlegm, which is then expelled via the large intestine. This has proven extremely effective in repeated trials. Contraindicated for chronic fright syndrome.
Furthermore, Heishen Wan (Black Spirit Pill): Extremely effective for acute fright syndrome; even infants on the verge of death recover after one dose. Qianban Fen (Nifan, Calomel) half qian, Jinmo (Gold Ink), Feimian (Fly Flour), Lucai each one qian, Shexiang (Musk), Naozhang (Borneol), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus, shell removed, wrapped in flour and roasted) each five fen. Grind all into fine powder, make pills with flour paste the size of paulownia seeds.
Another prescription for treating acute and chronic fright syndrome: Take five large Bufo bufo gargarizans gallbladders (Daxiatama Dan), pierce them into a bowl. Add Wujin Zhusha (Cinnabar, purified) five qian, Xiniuhuang (Rhinoceros Horn Calculus/Niuxihuang, one fen), and Shexiang (Musk, five li). Grind uniformly in the bowl and dry in the shade. Use two fen per dose, mixed with breast milk for administration.
Furthermore, Shenxiao Mifang (Divine Efficacy Secret Prescription) for fright syndrome and phlegm disorders: Sheng Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile/Raw Arisaematis Rhizoma), Zhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) each one liang, Da Zaojia (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) three pieces, Jiangziren (Crotonis Fructus/Semen Crotonis) forty-nine grains. Soak the above four ingredients in Yin-Yang Water overnight, change to fresh water, and decoct until dry. Remove Arisaematis Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma, and Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, retaining only Crotonis Fructus. Remove the membrane, coat, and heart from the Crotonis Fructus. Use seven black dates (Ziziphus Jujuba, peeled and pitted), Zhen Xininiu Huang (True Water Buffalo Calculus Bovis) one fen, Qingfen (Calomel) eight fen, Meihua Bingpian (Platycodon/Borneol, five li), Ming Xionghuang (Real Realgar) one qian, Chensha (Cinnabar) one qian. Grind the above five minerals/drugs into powder, mix with the prepared Crotonis Fructus, make pills the size of paulownia seeds, and coat with Jinbo (Gold Foil). Administer one fen per dose; for children, use only five to six li, washed down with light ginger soup. Alternatively, it is said that Crotonis Fructus must be pressed between several layers of paper to remove the oil.
Another prescription: Xingren (Apricot Seed), Taoren (Peach Seed), Nuomi (Glutinous Rice), Hu jiao (Pepper) each seven grains, Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit) seven pieces. Pound thoroughly, mix with egg white (Danqing) and Luofei mian (Sifted Wheat Flour), apply to the sole of the child's foot. For boys, apply to the left; for girls, to the right. Leave overnight; if the sole turns very black the next day, the disease is cured.
Another prescription: Huang Zhizi (Yellow Gardenia), egg white, Luofei mian (Sifted Wheat Flour), Lianxu Congbai (Scallion White with roots), pound together hundreds of times, apply to the area below the navel and the soles/palms of hands and feet.
Another prescription: Zhusha (Cinnabar), grind with newly drawn water, and apply to the top of the head (Baihui), anterior and posterior chest, and palms/soles. All are extremely effective.
Furthermore, for pediatric acute fright syndrome where phlegm confounds the heart orifices leading to unconsciousness: Use Wenbidan (Inhalation Powder) or Xingjun San (Military March Powder), apply a small amount to the nose to induce sneezing, thereby opening the qi pathways, resulting in revival.
