This is also considered Wei syndrome (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome). If the patient has been bedridden for a long time and become disabled, it is due to excessive internal fire boiling away the Kidney water. If one does not tonify the Kidney but only seeks to clear the fire, there will be no hope of recovery. Although the principle for treating Wei syndrome is to "solely take Yangming" (focus on the Stomach channel), meaning Stomach fire must be lowered, yet Kidney water must especially be replenished. Now, I transmit a miraculous formula: replenishing water amidst fire, and lowering fire within water, treating both the Stomach and the Kidney simultaneously. Naturally, the bone marrow will increase, and the blazing heat will dissipate; without specifically treating Wei syndrome, the syndrome will heal itself. The formula is named Jiangbu Dan (Descend and Tonify Pill). Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), and Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) each weigh one tael; Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua), Raw Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Glehniae Radix (Shashen), and Lycii Cortex (Digupi) each weigh five qian; Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) weighs two qian; Codonopsis Radix (Taidang) weighs one qian. Decoct with water and take orally. This formula descends while tonifying, and tonifies while descending, which is why it is exquisite. When Stomach fire does not arise, it naturally will not consume the Yin in the Kidney; once Kidney water is sufficient, it can naturally control the heat in the Stomach. The two mutually assist and complete each other. Who could surpass this formula in its efficacy for restoring weakness?
Another formula: Sheep Kidney Wine (see Women's Department, Seed-Generating Section) is most miraculous.
Yet another formula: Use two chestnuts (also known as板栗, select two that are both flat; if one is round and one is flat, eating them will be ineffective). [Text fragment appears corrupted or incomplete here regarding preparation method]. Regarding feet so weak they cannot walk, people attribute it to a deficiency of Kidney water, unaware that it is not the Kidney, but rather Qi deficiency failing to function. Use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) (see Internal and External Prepared Formulas) with added Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi) three qian, Honey-processed Polygonati Rhizoma (Huangjing) one tael, and Codonopsis Radix (Taidang) three qian. Decoct with water and take orally. After four doses, walking becomes possible. This formula originally contained Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), which was removed by famous physicians, resulting in even greater efficacy.
Yet another formula: Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong) one tael, decocted with half wine and half water. Take continuously for several doses. Walking is possible in three days, and full recovery in five days. For those with Kidney deficiency causing extreme pain and weakness in the feet, this formula is most effective.
Hong Kong foot (Tinea pedis/Charcot joint) swelling and pain, leg and foot weakness, and Jiu Feng Jiao (Alcoholic Foot) all manifest in the legs.
A piece of Cinnamomum camphora wood (Zhangmu), crushed into powder and decocted in soup. One tael of sediment from an old urine bucket (Yuantongsha), ground into powder, mixed with Chen Xiaofen (a type of starch/flour), and applied as a poultice to the hot, painful area. It possesses life-saving efficacy.
