Treats symptoms such as plague toxic qi, stench toxin, sand distension, and abdominal pain. Use Borneol (Bingpian), Musk (Shexiang), refined realgar (Feiguo Mingxiong), and refined cinnabar (Feiguo Zhusha) each 0.5 fen, and Niter (Yaxiao) 1 qian. Grind them together into a fine powder, store tightly in a porcelain bottle to prevent leakage of air. For males, apply a small amount to the left eye; for females, to the right eye. Using this powder when entering households affected by seasonal epidemics prevents infection. This powder also treats livestock plague and can be applied to the eyes of livestock.
This condition arises on both sides of the throat, resembling silkworm moths. When it appears on one side only, it is called single moth (Dan'e); when on both sides, double moth (Shuang'e). It may also resemble dates, chestnuts, or nipples, hence also known as nipple moth (Rume). In severe cases, initial symptoms include aversion to cold and fever. One must absolutely avoid using exterior-releasing drugs; if mistakenly used, the swelling will worsen. Redness and swelling without distinct form constitute Bi syndrome (impediment syndrome); with distinct form, it is Moth syndrome. Symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, phlegm-saliva obstruction, and difficulty swallowing, all caused by accumulated heat. There are degrees of severity. For severe cases, applying old garlic to Jingqu (LU8) acupoint is most effective. Refer to external treatments in Volume I. Frequently blow Yuanshu Dan (Pearl Pill) onto the affected area, then treat primarily with Chuwen Huadu San (Plague-Dispelling and Toxin-Resolving Powder). Decoctions should be taken until redness subsides, swelling disappears, and pain ceases. Recently, bad customs involve reckless use of knives and needles, leading to rotting and slow healing. Even if temporarily cured, relapse occurs later, causing significant harm. The throat strictly forbids knife and needle procedures; accidental injury to the uvula (Diding, commonly called "little tongue") is often incurable. Exercise utmost caution.
Medication for sore throat during pregnancy differs greatly from others. Even for healthy individuals taking medicine, contraindications must be known, especially distinguishing between pre-partum and post-partum stages. Drugs such as Mirabilite (Mangxiao), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Pangolin Scales (Chuanshanjia), Gleditsia Sinensis Thorns (Zaojiaoci), Aconite (Fuzi), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Xionghuang Jiedu Wan (Realgar-Resolving Pill), and Kaiguan San (Opening the Switch Powder) are strictly prohibited. In clearing and resolving methods, protecting the fetus is essential. For mild or chronic cases, modify and take Chuwen Huadu San or Liaoqiao San (Forsythia Powder). For severe or acute cases, prick Shaoshang (LU11) acupoint to squeeze out evil blood, scrape the posterior neck fossa and have someone suck out toxic blood, or apply a paste of old garlic and Calomel (Qingfen) to Jingqu (LU8). If the jaw is locked, fumigate the mouth and nose with paper twists soaked in Croton Seed Oil (Badou You). Refer to external treatments for throat conditions in Volume I for best results and safety; this is an expedient method for emergencies. If phlegm-saliva obstructs the throat, use the previously mentioned Swallow-Meizi (Swallow and Plum), prepared Grass Carp Gallbladder, Olive Pit, or Melon Stalk (Xianggudi) decoction to induce vomiting of phlegm-saliva. All these formulas are applicable. They are not contraindicated for pregnant women and are highly effective. After vomiting clears the airway, frequently blow Yuanshu Dan onto the painful areas of the throat. Following this method leads to natural recovery.
Treatment for post-partum sore throat differs from pre-partum. Post-partum aversion to cold, fever, body pain, and sore throat occur due to emptiness of all vessels after childbirth. Qi deficiency causes aversion to cold; blood deficiency causes fever; lack of nourishment to Ying, Wei, muscles, and bones causes body pain; floating deficient fire causes sore throat. Do not mistake this for an exterior syndrome; mistakenly using exterior-releasing diaphoretic methods leads to myriad complications and unpredictable disasters. Not only exterior-releasing methods but also all extremely bitter and cold agents are forbidden. This reflects the principle: "Pre-partum should avoid heat; post-partum should avoid cold." Medication post-partum is more difficult than pre-partum and requires extreme caution. For mild sore throat, medication may be unnecessary; simply blow Yuanshu Dan frequently onto the painful throat area for natural recovery. For slightly severe cases, refer to simple and experienced formulas from Volume I's throat section or earlier in this volume, adjusting as needed for miraculous effects. These are mild throat conditions. Fearing that medication errors post-partum cause other diseases, it is better not to medicate. For acute throat conditions, phlegm obstruction, or locked jaw, treat urgently with external methods. Use Alum (Shengfan) and Egg White to induce vomiting of phlegm, followed by blowing Yuanshu Dan. For young women with strong constitution or several days post-partum, do not rigidly adhere to previous advice; adjust throat formulas as necessary for efficacy. If accompanied by other symptoms, treat according to specific signs. If lochia stagnates with lower abdominal distension and pain resisting pressure, add Motherwort (Yimucao) 4-5 qian (preferably fresh, green, with flowers and leaves, avoiding old yellow stems), or add refined Polygonum multiflorum powder (Puhuang) and processed Cyathula Root (Wulingzhi) fried in vinegar, 2-3 qian each. In summary, post-partum primordial Qi is greatly deficient, and new blood has not yet formed. Headache, fever, cough, dry throat, and sore throat are mostly manifestations of deficiency. Avoid reckless use of draining/attacking agents. Distinguish carefully between pre-partum and post-partum medication; caution is paramount.
