Nie Jiuwu stated: The manifestations of acute convulsive disease (Ji Jing Feng) include body heat, flushed face, spasms and convulsions, upward deviation of the eyes, tightness and stiffness of the jaw, hot breath from the mouth and nose, and profuse salivation resembling a tide. It occurs suddenly, and after the episode subsides, the facial color returns to normal. Some cases are triggered by sudden fright, while others are not; however, most involve prior fever followed by convulsions, and there are no cases where convulsions occur with a cool body. This belongs to Yang syndrome (Yang Zheng). Generally, heat generates phlegm; when phlegm is excessive, it gives rise to fright and wind. It is appropriate to use cooling formulas to clear heat and resolve phlegm, thereby eliminating the convulsions and wind. One must absolutely avoid using acrid, warm, and drying wind-dispelling herbs, as this would instead exacerbate Heart fire and cause harm. When severe spasms occur, one should only support the patient gently and avoid grasping or restraining forcefully, lest wind-phlegm enter the meridians causing rigidity or contracture of the limbs. Furthermore, one must not panic or resort to moxibustion with moxa cones or burning lamps. Since this is a Yang syndrome, fire therapy is highly contraindicated; I have witnessed cases where fire therapy worsened the condition. Be vigilant! Although this condition is urgent, if managed calmly with cooling agents, peace can be restored. Do not heed contemporary quacks who use drastic purgatives such as Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆) or Calomelas (Qingfen, 轻粉) for quick results, as this causes significant harm. An old proverb says, "For acute convulsions, treat slowly." This is a practical and applicable maxim.
When infants are about to erupt smallpox (or chickenpox/rash), they may have a fever for two or three days without any visible rash spots, yet suddenly experience convulsions identical to acute convulsive disease. If physicians do not recognize this and mistakenly treat it as acute convulsive disease, administering cold-natured formulas or harsh phlegm-resolving purgatives will inevitably lead to untreatable conditions. In such cases, careful differentiation is required to avoid errors.

Decoct in one bowl of water until reduced to five or six parts, and instill into the mouth. If the child suddenly shivers, they will survive. This common prescription acts quickly; even if death has occurred, it can revive the child. It is named Kaiguan Fu (Open Coffin Axe).
Another Prescription: Fresh Plantaginis Herba et Semen (Cheqiancao, 车前草) and seeds, crushed to extract juice, mixed with white honey and boiling water for administration. The wind symptoms stop immediately; this has been tested repeatedly with miraculous results. If fresh Plantaginis Herba is unavailable, decoct Plantaginis Semen (Cheqiansi, 车前子) with honey water.
Another Prescription: Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 生石膏) 1 liang, Cinnabar (Chensha, 辰砂) 1 qian. Grind separately and mix evenly. Adults take 1 qian per dose; children aged 1-3 years take 5 fen, increasing gradually. Administer with raw honey.
Another Prescription: Realgar (Xionghuang, 明雄黄) 5 qian, Amomi Fructus (Sharen, 砂仁) 6 fen, Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子) 5 pieces [stir-fried], Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian, 冰片) 5 li. Grind into fine powder. Mix with egg white and apply around the umbilicus in a circle the size of a bowl opening. Place 5 li of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) into the umbilicus. Cover with cotton paper and tie securely with soft silk. After 24 hours, wash with warm water. Miraculous effect.
Another Prescription: Sweet Almond (Tian Xingren, 甜杏仁) 6 grains, Peach Kernel (Taoren, 桃仁) 6 grains, Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 黄栀子) 7 pieces. Crush these herbs, add rice wine, egg white, and dry flour. Form pills the size of Yuanxiao (glutinous rice balls) according to the child's age. Apply to the palms and soles, tying tightly with cloth strips. After one week, the palms and soles turn blue-green, indicating the disease is gone. Crucially, apply to the left side for males and the right side for females. This is essential, universally effective, and truly capable of reviving the dying.
Another Prescription: Take tender leaves of Hibiscus mutabilis (Furong, 芙蓉) [odd number for males, even for females], crush them, mix with egg, cook into a cake, and apply to the infant's umbilicus. Replace when cool. Immediate cure.
Another Prescription: Also treats slow convulsive disease. Use a white silky-feathered chicken (Black-boned green-eared, also known as Downy Chicken or White Phoenix, often from Taihe County, Jiangxi). Press the chicken's vent against the child's umbilicus. A chicken without wind will move away; one affected by wind will stick tightly, absorbing the wind toxin. Recovery occurs shortly. This is extremely effective. After recovery, pour sesame oil into the chicken's mouth to detoxify it.
Another Prescription: Also treats slow convulsions. Burn Junci Medulla (Dengxin, 灯心) at the center of the palms and soles [left for males, right for females] to stimulate the Triple Burner (Sanjiao, 三焦). Cure follows.
Another Prescription: A child of several years suffered from convulsions, arching backward into opisthotonos (Jiaogong Fanzhang, 角弓反张), with distressing cries. All medicines failed. One pill of Huoluo Wan (Huoluo Pill, 活络丸) induced immediate sleep. A few more pills led to complete recovery. This is incredibly effective. The genuine product is from Lao Chen Li Ji Shop at Jiwei Archway, Daxin Street, Guangzhou City. Other shops sell fakes which are ineffective.
Another Prescription: Quickly use two small moxa cones on the Jiewan points (Acupoints near the wrist crease) on both dorsal hands [three burns on each]. The head and feet will cease arching.
Another Prescription: See Volume 14, Stroke Section.
