Why is cowpox referred to as "Yin Dou" (Induced Cowpox)? Because the seed of the pox originates from cattle. In foreign lands, this disease did not originally exist; it was later transmitted from other places, leading to an increase in cases. However, households that raise dairy cows for milk are uniquely immune to infection. Physicians sought to understand the reason and observed small blue-green spots near the cow's udder, resembling human smallpox lesions. They realized that if cattle contract the pox, the symptoms are mild. Therefore, transmitting it to humans would likely cause no harm. Following ancient needle-pricking methods, they took cowpox lymph and inoculated it into the Xiaoshuo (Xiaoshuo, Acupoint SI9) and Qinglengyuan (Qinglengyuan, Acpoint SI10) acupoints on the arms. Within ten days, several pustules indeed appeared at the pricked sites. Day by day, fluid accumulated, then filled with pus, followed by scabbing and falling off. There was no damage or recurrence. This is because cattle belong to the Earth element, and the human Spleen also belongs to Earth. Using Earth to attract Earth, resonating with similar Qi, and generating through similar categories leads to efficacy. Since the pox seed comes from cattle, it is called cowpox.
Why is it called "Yin" (Induction/Guiding)? The answer is: The poison of the pox is received from congenital factors (congenital toxin), influenced by seasonal epidemic Qi, and dispersed through the meridians. At the time of conception, congenital toxins vary in depth. The influence of seasonal epidemics varies in quality. Dispersal through meridians to the Zang organs varies in severity. Normal pox may show spots immediately upon fever onset. The most dangerous condition involves poison in the Kidney Meridian, transmitting from Kidney to Liver, to Heart, to Lung, to Spleen. This involves the most meridian transmissions, and symptoms decrease in order. Thus, regarding pox eruption, Kidney is heaviest, and Spleen is lightest. According to the ancient method of inserting pox material into the nostrils, all five Zang organs must be traversed before fever occurs. The nose is the external opening of the Lung. Material inserted into the nose transmits Qi first to the Lung, which governs skin and hair. Lung transmits to Heart, which governs blood vessels. Heart transmits to Spleen, which governs muscles. Spleen transmits to Liver, which governs sinews. Liver transmits to Kidney, which governs bones. Pox poison hides within bone marrow; sensing the Qi of the vaccine material, it erupts. The poison travels from bone marrow to sinews, resolving Kidney poison. From sinews to muscles, resolving Liver poison. From muscles to blood vessels, resolving Spleen poison. From blood vessels to skin and hair, resolving Heart poison. From skin and hair to granules (pustules), resolving Lung poison. The vaccine Qi must enter layer by layer through the five Zang organs, and internal poison must exit layer by layer through the five Zang organs. This is the sequence of transmission. The current cowpox inoculation method selects the Xiaoshuo and Qinglengyuan acupoints on the arms, where upper and lower parts connect. This seems different from the nasal method. However, these two acupoints belong to the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) Meridian. The Sanjiao is the most critical Fu organ in the body, akin to the Three Origins of Heaven and Earth, commanding the five Zang and six Fu organs, Ying and Wei, and meridians, connecting internal and external, left and right, upper and lower Qi. When Sanjiao is unobstructed, internal/external, left/right, and upper/lower are all unobstructed. By guiding through this key point, the poison enters directly and simultaneously from skin, blood vessels, muscles, and sinews. Even if congenital poison is deeply hidden in the Kidney, its threads are naturally drawn out simultaneously, avoiding chaos. As stated in *Jin Jian* (Medical Standard): "Guiding the poison before it erupts." This is the meaning. As Zhang Xunyu stated in *Zhong Dou Xin Shu* (New Book on Smallpox Vaccination): "Using good vaccine to guide congenital poison, so the poison does not become rampant and symptoms naturally smooth out." This is also the meaning. Therefore, all smallpox inoculations use the induction method. To guide poison out via the Sanjiao Meridian, only the cowpox method is best.
Pox is a major illness for children. During epidemics, people try to avoid it. Is it right to intentionally give infants this disease? The answer is no. It is like catching a thief: it is easy to capture them while their power is not yet established. It is like removing weeds: it is easy to cut them when they have not yet spread. When a child gets pox, especially severe cases, doctors are summoned, medicine is taken, and the family guards day and night, enduring much sorrow. They consult fortune tellers and pray, facing much fear. Even mild cases require careful care. Now, cowpox inoculation uses only four or six pustules. The child plays, laughs, eats, and drinks as usual. After ten days, success is declared. There is no disaster or harm. Not only does the child avoid suffering, but parents are spared worry and labor. The method is truly excellent.
Someone asks: Are there deaths from cowpox inoculation? The answer is: Absolutely no possibility of death. When I was young, I had not contracted smallpox. I consulted physicians in detail to inoculate me. At that time, I was thirty-two years old...
