For infants suffering from watery diarrhea, scanty and painful urination, or urinary retention during the summer months: Use 1 qian of Polyporus (Zhu Ling), 1 qian each of Red Poria (Chi Ling) and Alisma (Ze Xie), 0.5 qian of Chaenomeles (Mu Gua), 0.6 qian of Atractylodes Macrocephala (Bai Zhu), 0.8 qian of Akebia (Mu Tong), 0.4 qian of Plantago Seed (Che Qian Zi) (lightly stir-fried), a small bundle of Juncus (Deng Xin), decocted in water with a pinch of salt. Administer when hungry; urination will naturally become unobstructed.
This formula is found in Volume VII, under the Dysentery section.
For newborns with significantly enlarged scrotums, this condition is called "Fetal Hernia" (Tai Shan). If left untreated until adulthood, it may transform into "Wood Hernia" (Mu Shan). For infants between one month and one year old, on the noon hour of the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu), fill a foot basin with hot water and place it in the center of the main hall. Hold the infant and immerse the scrotum in the water. Then, place the infant across the central threshold so that the moisture mark from the scrotum appears on the threshold. Burn mugwort (Ai Huo) three times at the wet mark on the threshold. The scrotum will gradually shrink back to normal size. This effect is miraculous and truly an extraordinary prescription.
Another prescription: Grind Stone Crab (Shi Xie) with good vinegar to extract juice and apply topically; also effective.
This swelling is caused by being blown upon by earthworms. Have a woman blow air onto the area using a bellows; the swelling will subside immediately.
Another prescription: Grind real Borax (Peng Sha) into powder, mix with water, and apply topically; very effective. Alternatively, use Er Wei Ba Du San (Two-Ingredient Poison-Extracting Powder) (see section on Carbuncle and Toxin formulas); also effective.
Burn old Fir wood (Lao Shan Mu) to ash while preserving its medicinal properties. Mix with Palace Powder (Gong Fen) and clear sesame oil to form a paste for topical application.
Decoct 1 liang of Cicada Slough (Chan Tui) in water to wash the affected area. Then, mash fresh Perilla Leaf (Zi Su Ye) into a paste and wrap it around the area until healed. Alternatively, grind dried Perilla Leaf into powder; if the skin is moist, apply dry powder; if dry, mix with fragrant sesame oil for application. Even if the skin is broken and pus has emerged, it yields miraculous effects.
For infants aged six to seven days whose scrotum retracts into the abdomen accompanied by incessant crying, this is caused by cold invasion. Use 5 qian each of Sulfur (Liu Huang) and Evodia (Wu Zhu Yu), grind into fine powder, and mix with mashed garlic to apply below the umbilicus. Additionally, lightly stir-fry Cnidium Seed (She Chuang Zi), wrap in cloth, and moxa/iron over the umbilicus to expel the cold.
For sudden swelling of the glans penis in infants, with severe pain during urination: Decoct Juncus Effusus (Deng Xin Cao) in water and administer at any time; the swelling will subside and pain will cease.
Puncture the thin membrane on the glans penis with pig bristle to remove it, which will restore urinary flow. This has been repeatedly verified. If there is no thin membrane on the glans, it indicates fetal heat. Take one green onion head, cut into four slices, steam with half a cup of breast milk, divide into four doses, and administer; urination will be restored.
