Chu Cheng once said: If the male semen is ejaculated first, and the female essence arrives later, then Yin wraps Yang, leading to a male pregnancy (birth of a son); if the female essence is released first, and the male semen arrives later, then Yang wraps Yin, leading to a female pregnancy (birth of a daughter). It is also stated that intercourse occurring when menstrual blood has just finished and turbid Qi has not yet cleared will result in a daughter. One must wait until two or three days after menstruation ends, at which time the woman's body is deficient and turbid Qi is exhausted. If the man preserves his energy for over a month, allowing Yang to surpass Yin, it will certainly result in a male pregnancy. Furthermore, regarding the left and right positions of the uterus: if the male semen enters the woman's left side, a son is born; if it enters the right side, a daughter is born. This is the ultimate theory concerning "male clear/female turbid" and "male left/female right," representing the peak of "Yang flourishing and Yin declining." Conception occurring during violent winds and heavy rains, or while drunk, full, or taking aphrodisiacs, often results in children who die young. Conception should only occur when the weather is clear and bright, the sun is warm and the breeze gentle, and stars and moon are shining; such children are often intelligent and wealthy. If conception occurs during improper seasons, or amidst fog/mist and anger, the children are often foolish and poor. If conception occurs during thunder and lightning, the child will surely have an abnormal appearance; one must indeed be extremely cautious.

Tiaojing Zhongzi Tang (Regulating Menstruation and Seed-Generating Decoction): Danggui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root portion), Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici, Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae) each 1 qian; Shudi Huang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae), Zhi Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi, processed) each 1.5 qian; Jiu Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, wine-processed), Fuling (Poria), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) each 0.8 qian; Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Guangpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) each 0.7 qian; Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) 3 slices. If menstruation comes early, the color will necessarily be purple; add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 0.8 qian. If menstruation is delayed, the color will necessarily be pale; add Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatum), Shu Aiyè (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, prepared) each 0.5 qian. Decoct with 1.5 bowls of water until reduced to 0.8 bowl. Take on an empty stomach on the day menstruation begins. Re-decoct the dregs and take before sleep. One dose per day. Continue taking until two or three days after menstruation stops, then intercourse will lead to pregnancy. If the menstrual cycle is regular but pregnancy does not occur, use Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci), Shashen (Radix Glehniae), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Yimucao (Herba Leonuri), Zhi Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi, processed) each 2 qian; Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici, Juhong (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Rubrum), Sharen (Fructus Amomi Rotundus, stir-fried and crushed) each 0.5 qian; Honghua (Flos Carthami) 0.3 qian. Decoct and take four doses when menstruation starts. Taking this in the next cycle will ensure pregnancy. For cases where menstruation flows freely but conception fails, take Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) dried and ground into powder, 2 qian daily, delivered with aged rice wine. Pregnancy will occur within two months without fail.

Ding Gong Xianzhen Fang (Immortal Pillow Formula of Duke Ding): Duke Ding, named Wei Qitai, was a person from the Kangxi era, having served as Commander-in-Chief of Shanxi. He had no heirs past seventy years old. After meeting an extraordinary person who taught him this formula, his vitality strengthened within two years. By age eighty-one, he had fathered twenty-one sons. The formula is: Make a pillow from thin Huaimu (Sophora tonkinensis) wood board, 3.3 cun high, 4.5 cun wide, 1.2 chi long, shaped like "round heaven and square earth." Drill 128 holes on the surface, sized like tung seeds. Fill the pillow with the following herbs. After 100 days, various illnesses will disappear, spirit will double, longevity will increase, and there will be many children; truly an immortal formula. If both husband and wife use this pillow, the effect is even more miraculous. Replace the medicinal materials every three to five months. Chijiao Daxian Yubiao Zhongzi Wan (Fish Maw Seed-Generating Pills of Barefoot Great Immortal): This formula was transmitted by an extraordinary person to an elderly Mr. Zhou from Dali Prefecture, Yunnan, who had no children. After taking it for over a month, he felt his eyesight improve and body become robust, hair turned black, beard darkened, and he fathered seven sons consecutively, living to 97 years old. This formula specifically treats physical weakness, excessive alcohol and sexual indulgence in both young and old, causing dizziness, tinnitus, blurred vision, soreness and pain in waist and knees, weakness in limbs, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, deficiency of lower Yuan, nocturnal emission, seminal leakage, and impotence. Or for men with cold sperm and kidney deficiency, inability to erect or maintain hardness, decline of primal Yang. Or for women with cold blood and weak qi, long-term cold uterus, red and white leukorrhea, irregular menstruation, and long-term infertility; taking this formula yields immediate effects. Those with children can also take it to prevent illness and preserve primal Qi. Siqi Zhongzi Wan (Four-Wonder Seed-Generating Pills): Fen Longgu (Powdered Dragon Bone, five-colored is best, baked on tile), Suoyang (Cynomorii Herba, washed in vinegar), Beixixin (Radix Asari, soaked in water overnight, sun-dried), Yangqishi (Mineral Lagenaearum, soaked in vinegar), Sharen (Fructus Amomi Rotundus, dehusked, stir-fried), Shexiang (Moschus, use Dangshenlu [Ginseng Stem] 5 qian, Bamazi [Semen Ricini]...)
