Why does the fingerprint suddenly float? This is because the pathogenic factor is in the skin layer, which is not yet a cause for concern.
Obstruction of the couli (interstices) is termed Exterior Syndrome (Biao Zheng). One should immediately employ methods to disperse the exterior and induce sweating.
(This fingerprint connects with the Taiyuan pulse. Whenever an external pathogen is present, the Taiyuan pulse floats, and this fingerprint also floats. Since the pathogen resides between the hair follicles and couli, the fingerprint becomes visible externally, which is called Exterior Syndrome. It is urgent to disperse it, open the hair follicles, and unblock the couli, allowing the pathogen to resolve through slight sweating. One dose can achieve success; why hesitate to administer it?)
Suddenly, the fingerprint at the Guan position gradually sinks, indicating that the pathogen has entered the interior and the disease is just beginning to deepen.
Do not rashly try wind-dispelling drugs; one must seek treatment targeting Interior Syndromes of the Yangming channel.
(A sinking fingerprint indicates the pathogen has entered the interior, though there are differences in depth. If there is alternating fever and chills and the fingerprint is half-sunken, the pathogen remains in the Yangming Stomach Channel; treatment should focus on releasing the muscle layer. If external symptoms show persistent high fever and the fingerprint is extremely sunk, the pathogen has entered the Yangming Stomach Organ; rapid purgation is required. Quack doctors, seeing body heat, still use wind-dispelling drugs. Treating an internal disease by addressing the exterior is incorrect; not only will the pathogen not be resolved, but it will also dry up yin blood, worsening the patient's condition.)
When the body is stable and red-yellow colors are seen, bright red often arises from cold syndromes.
Faint redness hidden within originally indicates deficiency-cold; do not wait until deep red transforms into heat.
(The spirit is tranquil, and Ying and Wei Qi are calm, signifying a state of peace. Yellow represents the harmonious qi, and red is the color of ceremonial attire. Faint red and yellow together suggest a harmonious scene, so why would there be instability? When cold pathogens first invade the skin and hair, meridians temporarily stagnate, causing the fingerprint to appear bright red due to blood stasis. Whether internal or external cold, whether early or late stage, seeing this fingerprint always indicates a cold syndrome. People with weak Middle Qi have insufficient Ying and Wei Qi, so their fingerprints appear faint and luminous. Faintness combined with red reflects deficiency-cold. As for the idea that deep red transforms into heat, what is the logic? Red originates from cold; how can it be heat? It is because cold closes the skin and blocks the couli... [text gap] ...the Guan fingerprint showing purple is a sign of heat, while cyan indicates wind, as stated in ancient texts.
Food stagnation, purple and cyan colors, and rebellious phlegm-qi; cyan and black across the three sections signify an incurable disaster.
(Ying Qi circulates within the vessels, while Wei Qi circulates outside. Heat obstructing the meridians blocks the pathway of Yin and Ying, causing the fingerprint to turn purple; purple signifies blazing heat, an established verdict throughout history. Shaoyang Jia Wood naturally has a green/cyan color. When the Liver and Gallbladder are affected by pathogens, the fingerprint shows cyan, indicating Wind-Cold injury. Cyan is the color of Wood; as the *Neijing* states, "In heaven it is Wind, on earth it is Wood." Thus, Wind and Wood share the same resonance. When the Liver is attacked by Wind pathogens, the fingerprint appears purple mixed with cyan. Regarding food injury: tangible food items obstruct the Middle Jiao, blocking Spleen Qi and preventing its dissemination. Consequently, Wind-Wood takes advantage of this distress to insult it, leading to rebellious phlegm-qi. One should clear the obstruction and allow free flow. If depression persists, Spleen Qi fails to transform further, and Ying and Wei become more stagnant. Then Wind, Phlegm, Food, and Heat consolidate in the Middle Jiao, appearing cyan mixed with black, representing extreme depression. Urgent purgation is needed to preserve life. Misdiagnosing this as Convulsive Disorder (Jing Feng) leaves less than one in a hundred chances of survival.)
