For cases of Lung deficiency with heat in the chest, coughing with rapid breathing, irritability and oppression, dryness and thirst in the throat, desire to drink cold water, physical fatigue and emaciation, fever with reduced appetite, hoarseness or loss of voice: Melt pure beeswax (Laricae Cera) until extremely clean. Use over eight taels of sour rice water (Suanjiangshui), place in a copper vessel, melt together, and form into 120 pills. Coat these pills with four taels of Ariciae Pulvis (Clam Shell Powder). Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly with half a walnut kernel, and swallow with warm water. Lie quietly afterwards, keep the mouth closed and do not speak. Take two pills daily; the condition will gradually improve and recover. Avoid eating chicken for half a year. Method for making sour rice water: Add a small amount of cooked rice to clear water, soak for four to five days until it becomes sour. Alternatively, rice washing water left for one or two days can be used as a substitute.
When wind-cold pathogens are contracted and remain in the Lungs, or when internal injury results from overexertion, leading to heavy-sounding cough, dull pain in the chest and diaphragm, stiffness of the neck and nape preventing turning or bending, this is Lung Abscess (Fei Yong). If prolonged, clear fluid runs from the nose, and purulent sputum with a yellow, foul, fishy odor is coughed up. In severe cases, there is distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, difficulty in breathing, reduced food intake, a surging pulse, spontaneous sweating, progressing to hemoptysis, alternating chills and fever, emaciation, hoarseness, and throat sores, transforming into Lung Withering (Fei Wei), which is a critical condition. Take one large Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), make an opening, and insert Almondae Semen (Xingren) [peeled and de-husked] according to the number of seeds inside the Gualou. Seal the opening, wrap externally with yellow mud, and roast until red. Roast until no smoke emerges, then remove and cover with a cloth to cool before removing the mud. Then add Fritillariae Bulbus (Chuanbeimu) in a quantity matching the number of Gualou seeds. Grind both into a fine powder. Take before retiring.
If saliva contains scattered traces of blood, this is bleeding caused by Ministerial Fire flaring upward from the Kidney channel. If blood appears like red threads coughed up from phlegm, this is bleeding due to heat damaging the collaterals. If white blood with a light red hue, resembling flesh or lung tissue, is coughed up, death is certain. Furthermore, blood streaks in expectorated phlegm belong to the Kidney channel; hemoptysis belongs to the Lung channel; vomiting blood in basins or bowls belongs to the Stomach channel; blood vomited rising counterflow from the hypochondrium belongs to the Liver channel; hematuria belongs to the Small Intestine channel; hematochezia belongs to the Large Intestine channel; gingival bleeding (Yaxuan) belongs to Deficient Fire of the Stomach and Kidney.
Take equal parts of Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), Trichosanthis Semen (Gualou Ren) [oil removed], Spongiosa (Haishi) [stir-fried black], Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) [stir-fried black], and Terminalia Chebula Retocarpa (Hezi Rou). Form into pills with honey, and dissolve slowly in the mouth to treat coughing.
Another prescription: Equal parts of Dendrobii Flos (Kuandonghua) and Lilii Bulbus (Baihe) [steamed and dried], ground into powder. Form into pills the size of a longan fruit. Chew one pill before sleep, taken down with ginger decoction.
Another prescription: One large dried persimmon (Shibing), remove seeds, insert one qian of Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), tie tightly with cotton thread, steam on rice until cooked. Consume before sleep, taken down with mint decoction. Extremely effective.
Dusheng San: Treats chronic cough, Lung Withering with hemoptysis, and red sputum. Use three taels of Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji) ground into powder. Take two qian per dose, swallowed with glutinous rice decoction before retiring.
A jailer in Taizhou pitied a heavy prisoner, who expressed gratitude saying, "I have committed capital offenses seven times and endured torture, causing damage to my lungs. I obtained a prescription using Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji) powder mixed with rice water, which was miraculously effective." Later, when he was sentenced to lingchi (death by a thousand cuts), his chest was opened, revealing dozens of cavities in the lungs filled with Baiji, the color unchanged.
