Refer to the formulas for head conditions and carbuncles (skin suppurative infections). Within a few months after birth or between one and two years of age, hot sores (heat-type skin lesions) suddenly appear on the head and face, even spreading over the whole body; this is fetal toxin (toxins retained by the fetus in the womb). Use two or three eggs, boiled whole, remove the white and keep the yolk. Add a clump of tangled hair the size of an egg, and dry-fry it in an iron vessel over charcoal fire. Initially it becomes very dry; after a while the hair chars and oil exudes from the egg. Wait for it to cool, collect the oil, mix with powder of Sophora flavescens Radix (Kushen), and apply to the affected area. It will heal in a few days. If the egg oil is difficult to extract, after frying until dry, add a small amount of boiling water; the oil will float on the surface and can be collected.
Another formula: One tael of purple sugarcane peel, five qian of powdered Child's Tea (Erythrinae Semen), two qian of Dragon's Blood (Sanguis Draconis), and four fen of Plum Blossom Borneol (Bingpian), all ground into powder. Mix with pig bile and apply. The effect is miraculous.
Another formula: Five qian each of aged Calcined Alum (Duanshi, best if stored for ten-plus years, the older the better), Powdered Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), and Talcum (Huashi). Mix with tung oil and apply. The effect is miraculous.
Another formula: Ji Yao Gao (Chicken Kidney Ointment, see formulas for carbuncles); very effective for early-stage cases. There are also several other formulas for the head that are effective.
This condition may occur in infants within a few months after birth, or in children at a few years of age; the timing varies. Internal and external treatment combined prevents sequelae. If only external application is used without internal medication, recurrence occurs upon consuming triggering foods (foods that may induce disease), making it difficult to treat. If an infant of only a few months suffers from this and cannot take oral medicine, the mother should take the medicine so that its effects are transmitted through breast milk, which is highly appropriate. Initially, administer Jing Fang Bai Du San (Atractylodes and Saposhnikovia Decoction) for one or two doses, then frequently administer herbs that dispel wind, cool blood, resolve toxins, and clear heat. Continue until the sores heal, then stop taking them to prevent future issues (First, wash the affected area with decoction of aged tea leaves and Artemisia argyi leaves; then dry with old cotton wool and soft paper. Mix the following powder with pure sesame oil, apply using a duck feather brush to the affected area, washing and applying twice daily morning and evening; it heals in a few days). Three qian of Child's Tea (Erythrinae Semen), two qian of Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), one qian of Realgar (Xionghuang), one qian of Yunnan Coptis Rhizome (Yunlian), one qian of Mentha Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), and two fen of Borneolum Syntheticum (Shang Si Liu Bingpian), all ground into fine powder.
Jing Feng (Convulsive Disorder) has two types: acute and chronic. Acute Jing Feng belongs to excess-heat patterns and should be treated with cooling methods. Chronic Jing Feng belongs to deficiency-cold patterns and should be treated with warming and tonifying methods. These two diseases are as far apart as heaven and earth, and their treatments are as opposite as ice and charcoal. Many texts use a single herb to treat both acute and chronic Jing Feng, which is extremely erroneous and causes endless harm; careful differentiation is essential.
