Formula for Tonifying the Lung and Expelling Wind: Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Fuling (Poria), Shanyao (Chinese Yam), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Baibu (Stemona Root), Baiziren (Biota Seed), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Danshen (Salvia Root), Duzhong (Eucommia Bark). The above herbs are ground into a fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills. Each liang of herbal powder yields twenty-four pills. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, and swallow with rice water after meals.
For treating wind-toxin in the Lung organ causing skin sores resembling Leprosy (Da Feng): Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shashen (Glehnia Root) (each 1 liang), Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root) (0.5 liang), Kushen (Sophora Root), Danshen (Salvia Root), Chijian (Aralia Rhizome/Actaea Rhizome, here referring to Duohuo/Singaporan Ginseng equivalent or specific local herb, often identified as Angelica Dahurica or similar in ancient texts, but literally "Red Arrow") (each 1 liang), Wushe (Zaocys Snake) (3 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (0.5 liang). The above nine herbs are ground into a fine powder. Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark), Baiyangpi (White Poplar Bark), Digupi (Lycium Bark), Huaibaipi (Locust Tree Bark) (Revised: these four bark ingredients have no specified dosage in this formula; they are also recorded in *Taiping Shenghui Fang*). These four barks are finely chopped, boiled in ginger juice for 20-30 boils, then removed, dried by baking, pounded, and sieved into a fine powder. Mix evenly with the previous herbal powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine.
For treating chronic deficiency of Lung Qi with panting, urgency in breathing, and frequent fatigue: Kuaodonghua (Coltsfoot Flower), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Bai Fuling (Poria), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Ziwan (Aster Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig). The above herbs are divided equally and made into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, remove dregs, and take warm after meals.
For treating Lung Lao Heat (consumptive fever due to lung damage), lung injury with parasites resembling silkworms residing in the lungs, causing coughing, rebellious Qi, panting, or leading to You Ge (Worry Diaphragm), Qi Ge (Qi Stagnation Diaphragm), Hui Ge (Anger Diaphragm), Han Ge (Cold Diaphragm), Re Ge (Heat Diaphragm). All these Ge syndromes arise from this type of Lao Qi (Consumptive Qi), named Maidong Tang Syndrome: Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 10 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Jiangtang (Dried Ginger), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Baibu (Stemona Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (each 5 fen). The above herbs are ground into a fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly.
For treating Lung deficiency with exogenous heat, coughing, urgent breathing, chest irritability and palpitations, limb fatigue and pain, dry throat and mouth, excessive salivation and phlegm foam, expulsion of foul matter, emaciation, fever, decreased appetite, and lethargy: Renshen (Ginseng Root), Ziwan (Aster Root), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Baibu (Stemona Root), Kuaodonghua (Coltsfoot Flower), Shanyao (Chinese Yam), Tiandongmen (Asparagus Tuber), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (4 liang). The above herbs are ground into a fine powder, mixed with melted beeswax to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 7 fen, take hot together with the dregs after meals.
