Treating jaundice, where the face, eyes, and nails are all yellow, accompanied by restlessness and oppression in the heart and diaphragm.
Gentianae Rhizoma et Radix (Genti), Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou), Glutinous Millet (Shumi), and Clove (Dingxiang) (each 27 units).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take an amount the size of a bean and insufflate it into the nose. Pain and sneezing should occur; within a moment, yellow sweat or saliva should be discharged, and vomiting of approximately one sheng [unit of volume] from the mouth indicates cure. If the disease is severe, add one unit; if not cured, repeat.
Empirical formula for resolving jaundice:
Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Shanyinch'en), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) (each 1 liang), Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium (Zhiqiao) (7 units).
Finely cut the above as one dose. Add 2 sheng of water and decoct to 1 sheng. Divide into three doses. Remove the dregs and take warm or cold at will. If the internal organs are excess-type with constipation, add Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) 1 liang. If not cured, prepare another dose.
Treating acute jaundice:
Clove (Dingxiang), Gentianae Rhizoma et Radix (Genti), Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou) (each 7 grains).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Mix with one egg white (Ovi Albumen). Dissolve in freshly drawn water and take in one dose. Vomiting and diarrhea should occur, which indicates efficacy. If no response, take again.
Treating patients with jaundice affecting the whole body, face, and eyes, with slight swelling of the body and limbs, chest fullness preventing lying down, and sweating resembling the color of Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai). This is caused by profuse sweating followed by sudden immersion in water, termed Huanghan (Yellow Sweat).
Astragali Radix (Huangqi) (5 liang), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) (each 3 liang).
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Each dose is 5 qian. Add 1.5 zhan of water and 0.5 zhan of vinegar. Decoct to 1 zhan. Remove dregs and take warm.
Treaching headache after eating, palpitations, and depression due to overeating after starvation, causing stomach qi stagnation and fighting with heat, termed Gudanz (Grain Jaundice).
Artemisiae Scopariae Herba cum Radice (Yinchenhao) (6 liang), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) (3 liang), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) (1 liang).
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Each dose is 5 qian. Add 2 zhan of water and decoct to 1 zhan. Remove dregs and take warm, without specific timing.
Treating discomfort and pain in the epigastrium, swelling and fullness of the calves, yellow urine, and red spots on the face, caused by heavy drinking followed by exposure to wind and cold water entering the body, where cold and heat fight and steam the spleen qi, termed Jiudanz (Wine Jaundice).
Treatment as described above.
Gentianae Rhizoma et Radix (Genti), Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou), Glutinous Millet (Shumi) (each half liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian mixed with rice water, without specific timing.
