At the time when the smallpox pustules erupt, the body feels intensely hot. Red measles spots cover the entire body. This is caused by wandering fire in the Spleen and Lung meridians accompanying the eruption of smallpox; once the measles are pushed out, the treatment of smallpox can succeed.
Initially, only dozens of smallpox spots appear, with fine and dense red dots all over the body. This is a case of largepox accompanied by measles, resulting from wind-heat in the Spleen and Lung exteriorizing.
Measles sometimes erupt simultaneously with smallpox. During the phase of smallpox eruption, the patient experiences steaming fever. Just as dozens of smallpox seeds appear, the whole body turns red, with fragmented and dense spots resembling measles, making it seem not like smallpox at first glance. In reality, this is largepox erupting with accompanying measles. The smallpox is erupting normally, while the measles are merely wind-heat wandering fire from the Spleen and Lung, appearing alongside the smallpox. This condition is not critical or life-threatening. Upon encountering such cases, there is no need for panic. Use Yuanshen Shengma Tang (Decoction of Scrophularia and Cimicifugae) by removing Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), adding Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and administering for one to two doses. This will promote the eruption and resolution of the measles. The primary smallpox will naturally proceed to distension and suppuration according to schedule, achieving therapeutic success. In such cases of smallpox with accompanying measles, the smallpox spots tend to be sparse.
Yuanshen Shengma Tang: Treats conditions where smallpox is accompanied by measles, macules, or carbuncles.
Ingredients: Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 qian), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Perillae Folium), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus, fried and ground, 0.7 qian each), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, peeled, 0.3 qian). Decoct in water and take warm.
When the smallpox lesions regress and scabs form, the body develops fever again, surprising the physician. Suddenly, the entire body becomes red, revealing measles that cover the smallpox to resolve toxicity.
At the stage when smallpox lesions regress and scab, fever recurs, and the whole body turns red. Careful examination shows that the pustules are full of pus. This is measles erupting to cover the smallpox and resolve its toxicity. Why is it named so? "Covering smallpox" refers to a layer of measles covering the smallpox lesions; "resolving toxicity" means that the eruption of these measles can resolve the smallpox toxin. It is appropriate to use Dalianqiao Yin (Infusion of Large Forsythia) by removing Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and adding Shu Shigao (Prepared Gypsum Fibrosum), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Dan Zhuye (Lophatheri Herba), and Digupi (Phellodendri Cortex) each at 1 qian, to clear residual heat. These symptoms likely arise because during the distension and suppuration phase of smallpox, the lesions were already dense, and the physician excessively used tonic agents to hasten pus formation, causing heat stagnation in the Spleen and Lung.
Dalianqiao Yin: Treats damp-toxin and promotes urination.
Ingredients: Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, de-seeded, 1 qian), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Perillae Folium), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 0.7 qian each), Zhiren (Gardeniae Semen, wine-fried), Huashi (Talcum, ground, 0.5 qian each), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, fried), Qumai (Dianthi Herba), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, de-rhizome, 0.8 qian each), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, head and feet removed, cleaned of soil, 12 pieces), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, peeled, 0.3 qian). If heat is severe and constipation occurs, add Jiuhuang Da (Wine-processed Rheum Palmatum) 1 qian, with Ginger slice (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) as a guiding herb.
Removing Zhiren (Gardeniae Semen) from the previous formula and adding Zicao (Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma) creates the name Lianqiao Xingfeng Tang (Wind-Dispersing Infusion of Forsythia). It treats smallpox and measles complicated by heat-toxin obstruction and urinary retention.
