Ping An (Commentary): The section from the annotation "lacking two segments, thus able to conceive a child" upwards is incomplete and fragmented, and the chapter title cannot be ascertained. Therefore, from "Huangdi asked Bo Gao" to "embracing the human form," it has been carefully supplemented from Volume 10, Chapter 71, "Xie Ke" (Invading Evil) of the *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot). From "Heaven possesses Yin and Yang" down to "correspondence between Heaven and Earth," it appears in the *Ling Shu · Xie Ke* chapter.
Huangdi asked Bo Gao: I wish to understand how the limbs and joints of humans correspond to Heaven and Earth; why is this so? Bo Gao replied: Heaven is round and Earth is square; the human head is round and the feet are square, thereby corresponding to them. Heaven has the Sun and Moon; humans have two eyes. Earth has the Nine Provinces; humans have nine orifices. Heaven has wind and rain; humans have joy and anger. Heaven has thunder and lightning; humans have voice and sound. Heaven has the Four Seasons; humans have four limbs. Heaven has the Five Tones; humans have the Five Zang Organs. Heaven has the Six Lv (pitch pipes); humans have the Six Fu Organs. Heaven has Winter and Summer; humans have cold and heat conditions. Heaven has the Ten Heavenly Stems; humans have ten fingers on the hands. The Earthly Branches number twelve; humans have ten toes on the feet, plus the penis and scrotum to correspond to them, while women lack these two segments to accommodate the form for bearing children. (Supplemented above from the *Ling Shu · Xie Ke* chapter. Lacking these two segments allows for conception.) Heaven has Yin and Yang; humans have husbands and wives. A year has three hundred and sixty-five days; humans have three hundred and sixty-five joints. (Ping An: In the *Ling Shu*, there is a character "you" [have] after "ren" [human].) Earth has high mountains; humans have shoulders and knees. Earth has deep valleys; humans have axillae. (Gemo fan, meaning bent legs, here referring to axillae.) Earth has twelve great rivers; humans have twelve primary meridians. Earth has cloud vapor; humans have Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). Earth has grasses; humans have fine hair. Heaven has day and night; humans have sleeping and rising. Heaven has constellations; humans have teeth. Earth has small hills; humans have small joints. Earth has rocks and stones; humans have prominent bones. Earth has forests and trees; humans have tendons and fascia. Earth has gathered cities; humans have muscles. A year has twelve months; humans have twelve major joints. There are times in the year when grass does not grow on Earth; humans have mother-child relationships. This is why humans correspond with Heaven and Earth. ("Mu" should be interpreted as membrane, also meaning covering. Mo Jin refers to the membranes wrapping the Twelve Sinew Meridians and the flesh between the sinews. The human body has twenty-six forms, corresponding to the forms of Heaven and Earth. Ping An: In the *Ling Shu*, "chi ya" is written as "ya chi," and there are four characters before "shi.")
