[Ping An]: This chapter appears in Volume 8, Chapter 30 "Yangming Maijie" of *Suwen* (Plain Questions), and also in Volume 7, Chapter 2 of *Jiayijing* (Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion).
The Yellow Emperor asked Qibo: When the Foot-Yangming Meridian (Foot Yangming Channel) is diseased, the patient dislikes people and fire, and hears the sound of wood with a start of fear. However, the sounds of bells and drums do not disturb them. Why does hearing the sound of wood cause alarm? I wish to hear the reason.
Qibo replied: The Yangming Meridian is the meridian of the Stomach (Zang-Fu Organ: Stomach). The Stomach belongs to Earth in the Five Elements (Wu Xing). Therefore, hearing the sound of wood causes alarm because Earth fears Wood. [Special explanation for Yangming among the Twelve Primary Meridians (Twelve Jing-Mai): The Stomach receives water and grain to nourish the Zang-Fu organs. Its Qi is powerful; when harmonious, it provides great benefit; when affected by pathogenic factors, the disease is severe. Hence, it is explained separately. [Ping An]: In *Suwen* and *Jiayijing*, the phrase "to Qibo" after "The Yellow Emperor asked" is absent, and "Yangming Meridian" is written as "Foot-Yangming Meridian". Regarding "bells and drums do not disturb, hearing wood causes alarm", *Jiayijing* reads "desires to close doors and windows alone to stay inside."]
The Yellow Emperor said: Excellent. Why does he dislike fire?
Qibo said: Yangming governs the flesh (Muscles). Its blood and Qi are abundant. When pathogens invade, heat arises. When heat is excessive, one dislikes fire.
The Yellow Emperor said: Why does he dislike people?
Qibo said: When Yangming Qi rebels, there is panting and suffocation (chest oppression), leading to a dislike of people. (" ", pronounced Wu Pan fan, here means "men" or suffocation/oppression. [Ping An]: In *Jiayijing*, "governs flesh" is written as "governs muscles". "Its blood is abundant", *Suwen* writes "its channel blood and Qi are abundant", *Jiayijing* writes "its blood and Qi are abundant". "Then panting like... then dislikes people", *Suwen* writes "then panting and... then dislikes people", *Jiayijing* writes "then panting and oppressive then dislikes people". Furthermore, *Jiayijing* has sixteen characters after "dislikes people": "Yin and Yang struggle, Yang exhausts, Yin becomes excessive, thus desiring to close doors and windows alone to stay inside." The note states: From "Yin and Yang struggle" to this point, originally from *Suwen · Maijie* chapter, moved here by Yang Shangshan.]
The Yellow Emperor said: Excellent. Some die from panting, some survive from panting. What is the reason?
Qibo said: If Jue-Ni (Rebellious Qi) connects to the Zang organs, death occurs; if it connects to the Jing-Meridians, survival occurs. [Connecting to Zang organs indicates deep disease, hence death; connecting to meridians indicates superficial disease, hence survival.]
The Yellow Emperor said: Excellent. In severe Yangming disease, patients discard their clothes and run, climb high and sing. Some do not eat for several days, cross walls, and climb onto roofs. The places they climb are not what they could do normally. Why can they do this when sick?
Qibo said: The four limbs are the root of all Yang meridians. When pathogens are excessive, the four limbs become solid/excess. Solidity enables climbing high.
The Yellow Emperor said: Why discard clothes?
Qibo said: Because heat is excessive in the body, they discard clothes and run.
The Yellow Emperor said: Why curse without distinguishing relatives and strangers, and sing?
Qibo said: Excessive Yang makes people lose appetite, thus speaking wildly/nonsensically. ("Su" means "previously/originally". This person did not previously have these abilities; it is due to Yangming disease. The Foot-Yangming and Hand-Yangming meridians are excess and full, favoring climbing. Due to heat-induced oppression, they discard clothes. [Ping An]: "Places climbed", *Suwen* writes "places climbed upon", *Jiayijing* omits this sentence. "Why can they do this in reverse?", Yuan edition writes "Why can they do this in reverse?". Above "curse", *Suwen* has "speak wildly". Below "Yang excess", *Suwen* writes "makes people speak wildly, curse without distinguishing relatives and strangers, and lose appetite; losing appetite leads to running wildly", *Jiayijing* writes "thus speak wildly, curse without distinguishing relatives and strangers."]
