The meridian of the Pericardium of Hand-Jueyin has nine acupoints in total. It begins with Tianchi (PC9) and Tianquan (PC10), passes through Quze (PC3) and Ximen (PC4) along its curved path, and connects to Jianshi (PC5) which is located above Neiguan (PC6). Daling (PC7) is near Laogong (PC8), and having mastered these points, one reaches Zhongchong (PC9) at the tip of the middle finger.
The Pericardium meridian originates from Tianchi (PC9), located one cun behind the nipple and three cun below the axillary fold. Tianquan (PC10) is two cun below the anterior axillary fold. Quze (PC3) is found in the center of the transverse cubital crease when the elbow is flexed. Ximen (PC4) is five cun proximal to the wrist crease.
Jianshi (PC5) is measured three cun proximal to the wrist crease. Neiguan (PC6) is only two cun proximal to the wrist crease. Daling (PC7) lies between the two tendons posterior to the palm. Laogong (PC8) is located between the tips of the flexed middle and ring fingers. Zhongchong (PC9) is situated at the tip of the middle finger.
The meridian of the Sanjiao of Hand-Shaoyang originates at the end of the fourth finger (ring finger). It ascends out between the fourth and fifth fingers, follows the dorsal aspect of the hand and wrist, emerges between the two bones of the forearm, ascends through the elbow, and follows the lateral upper arm to the shoulder. It then crosses posterior to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian, enters the supraclavicular fossa (Quepen), distributes in the chest region (Shanzhong), and scatters to connect with the Pericardium. It descends through the diaphragm and belongs to the Sanjiao. Its branch arises from Shanzhong, ascends out of the supraclavicular fossa, goes up the neck, and connects behind the ear. It goes straight up to emerge above the ear apex, then curves down to the cheek and reaches the outer canthus. Another branch enters the ear from behind it, exits in front of the ear, passes through Shangguan (GB2/Keguzhuren), crosses anteriorly on the cheek, and arrives at the outer canthus. When this meridian is disturbed, symptoms include deafness, tinnitus described as a roaring sound ("hunhun"), swollen throat, and pharyngeal obstruction. This meridian governs diseases related to Qi, manifesting as sweating, pain in the outer canthus, facial swelling, and pain in the area anterior to the ear, shoulder, upper arm, elbow, and lateral forearm, with dysfunction of the fourth and fifth fingers. For these conditions, excess patterns are treated by reducing, deficiency patterns by tonifying, heat patterns by rapid needle withdrawal, cold patterns by retaining the needle, sinking Qi by moxibustion, and mixed excess-deficiency patterns by selecting points from the affected meridian itself. Excess is indicated when the Renying pulse is more than double that of the Cunkou pulse; deficiency is indicated when the Renying pulse is smaller than the Cunkou pulse. ("Hunhun" is pronounced "tun").
The end of the arm bone is the wrist, the end of the elbow bone is the elbow, the lower part of the humerus opposite the armpit is the upper arm (Nao), and below the eye is the zygomatic area. The Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao meridian originates at Guanchong (TE1) at the tip of the fourth finger. It ascends out between the fourth and fifth fingers through Liqiu (TE2), Zhongzhu (TE3), and Yangchi (TE4). It emerges between the two bones of the forearm, reaches Tianjing (TE10), and ascends from there along the lateral aspect of the upper arm, passing Qinglengyuan (SI11) and Xiaoshuo (SI12). It runs deep to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine meridian and superficial to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian. It ascends to the shoulder, meeting Jianliao (TE14) and Tianliao (TE15). Crossing posterior to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian, it passes Bingfeng (GB12) and Jianjing (GB21), descending into the supraclavicular fossa. From there, lateral to the Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian, it meets at the upper Jiao of Shanzhong. It scatters and connects around the Pericardium, then descends through the diaphragm to connect with the Bladder to regulate the lower Jiao. It attaches to the right kidney for its generation. Its branch ascends from Shanzhong out of the supraclavicular fossa, goes up the neck over Dazhui (GV14), follows Tianyou (TE16) to behind the ear, passes Yifeng (TE17) and Maichuang, goes straight up to emerge above the ear apex at Jiaosun (SJ20). It passes Xuanli (GB37) and Hanyan (GB13), and also passes Yangbai (GB14) and Jingming (BL1), curving through the ear and cheek to meet at the zygomatic region.
Another branch enters the ear from Yifeng (TE17), passes Tinggong (SI19), Ermen (TE21), and Tinghui (GB2), exits to the outer canthus, joins Tongziliao (GB1), follows Sizhukong (TE23), and intersects with the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian. Above the Shaoyang, Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) dominates. Therefore, disturbance of this meridian causes deafness, roaring tinnitus, swollen throat, and pharyngeal obstruction, indicating an excess of Xianghuo above. Since Shaoyang represents the initial growth of Yang Qi, diseases governed by Qi include sweating, as Yang added to Yin causes sweating. Pain in the outer canthus, facial swelling, and disorders in the areas behind the ear, shoulder, upper arm, elbow, forearm, and fourth/fifth fingers occur because these are parts traversed by the meridian. If the Renying pulse is larger and restless, the disease is in the Hand-Shaoyang meridian. Thus, excess is marked by the Renying pulse being double the Cunkou pulse, and deficiency by the Renying pulse being smaller than the Cunkou pulse.
