When Yin Qi condenses on the exterior, Yang Qi becomes depressed within. Consequently, the people suffer from various symptoms such as heat distension and red urine. Swelling of the face and eyes, along with excessive sleepiness, are caused by the pathogenic influence of Damp Earth (Shi Tu). Nasal discharge, epistaxis, sneezing, yawning, and vomiting are caused by the pathogenic influence of Wind Wood (Feng Mu).
During the Second Qi phase, Yang Qi begins to disperse, the people feel comfortable, and all things grow and flourish. However, if pestilence arrives in full force, the people may die suddenly. The master guest Qi of this phase involves the Ministerial Fire and Sovereign Fire; Yang Qi is thus disseminated, leading to comfort for the people and flourishing growth for all things. If pestilence strikes severely, sudden death occurs because the two Fires interact, with the Ministerial Fire (Chen Wei) encroaching upon the Sovereign position.
During the Third Qi phase, the celestial administration spreads, coolness prevails, and dryness combines with heat. When dryness reaches its extreme, moisture appears. The people suffer from alternating chills and fever. The Metal Qi of the ruling Heaven adds pressure, causing the celestial administration to spread and coolness to prevail. The main Qi of the Third Phase is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, hence dryness and heat intermingle. As the Third Qi ends and transitions to the Fourth Qi's Cold Water and Wet Earth, extreme dryness yields to moisture. The interaction of Dryness, Dampness, Water, and Fire causes the people to suffer from alternating chills and fever.
During the Fourth Qi phase, cold rain descends. Diseases manifest as sudden collapse, trembling, delirium, shortness of breath, dry throat, thirst, heart pain, carbuncles, sores, malaria chills, bone atrophy, and bloody stools. The added guest Qi is Taiyang Cold Water, while the main Qi is Taiyin Wet Earth, hence cold rain descends. After the midpoint of the year, although Shaoyin Sovereign Fire is the main Qi, it is counteracted by cold and dampness. Thus, symptoms like trembling, delirium, dry throat, and bloody stools arise because cold congeals on the outside while fire is depressed inside. The Classic states: "All cases of inhibition, drumming, and shivering, resembling a loss of spiritual control, belong to Fire." Heart pain occurs because cold evil invades the interior and harasses the Sovereign Fire. The Classic states: "Evil in the Heart causes heart pain and frequent dizziness/collapse." It also says: "All carbuncles, swelling, tendon contraction, and bone pain are swellings caused by Cold Qi."
During the Fifth Qi phase, spring-like conditions return abnormally, grass and plants flourish, and the people's Qi is harmonious. Jueyin Wind Wood is added to the Fifth Qi, causing spring conditions to appear prematurely. Grass receives the generating Qi and flourishes. The depression of Shaoyin is relieved by Wood Qi, bringing harmony to the people.
In the Final Qi phase, Yang Qi disperses, the climate becomes unusually warm, hibernating insects emerge, flowing water does not freeze, and the people remain healthy and peaceful. The disease tends to be Warmth (Wen). Shao Yin Sovereign Fire Qi is added to the Final Qi, allowing the Yang Qi of the Earthly Abode to disperse, making winter unusually warm. Because winter is warm, hibernating insects do not hide, and water does not freeze. The Earth Qi is smooth, so the people are healthy. If disaster strikes, it will primarily manifest as Warmth disease (Dong Wen). Dong Wen is vastly different from Shang Han (Cold Damage). Master Yu stated: "Winter injury by Cold, followed by current infection by Warmth/Heat, differs significantly from Shang Han." Therefore, one should eat grains of the year (Sui Gu) to stabilize Zheng Qi (Righteous Qi), and eat interstitial grains (Jian Gu) to eliminate Evil. Sui Gu refers to white or red grains generated by Heaven and Earth Qi (Yuan Zhen Qi). Jian Gu is generated by interstitial Qi. For example, eat white grain in the First Qi, white/red in the Second, red/yellow in the Fourth, and red/green in the Fifth. Evil here refers to the pathogen that overcomes the interstitial Qi.
For this year, treatment should utilize Salty, Bitter, and Pungent flavors, employing sweating, clearing, and dispersing methods. Salty clears Sovereign Fire heat; Pungent moistens Yangming Dryness; Bitter drains internal depressed Fire; Sweating resolves external Cold; Clearing eliminates internal Evil; Dispersing resolves Winter Warmth Qi. Stabilize the Yun Qi (Luck/Qi movement) to prevent Evil invasion. Since Yun Qi is insufficient, it must be stabilized to prevent Evil dominance. Break up depressed Qi and nourish its source by adjusting the Tian Quan (Heaven/Earth) Qi to support the Five Yun sources. Adjust dosage based on the severity of Cold and Heat. If similar to Heat, use more Heavenly transformation (Cooling); if similar to Coolness, use more Earthly transformation (Warming). Use Cold to clear Earthly Fire/Heat; use Heat to restrain Heavenly Dry Metal. Similarities require more intervention; differences require less. For instance, in years of weak Fire (Shao Zheng) or weak Wood (Shao Jiao) similar to Shaoyin Heat, use more Heavenly Cooling. In years of weak Metal (Shao Shang), Earth (Shao Gong), or Water (Shao Yu) similar to Yangming Coolness, use more Earthly Warming. Heavenly transformation refers to Dry Metal's cooling; Earthly transformation refers to the Fire/Heat of the Di Qiu (Earthly Abode). As per *Zhi Zhen Yao Da Lun*: "When Wind dominates, pacify with Cool/Clear." This aligns Wind with Heat transformation, requiring Cooling.
Avoid using Cool medicines during Cool seasons, Hot medicines during Hot seasons, Cold medicines during Cold seasons, and Warm medicines during Warm seasons. Diet should follow the same rules. If there are false manifestations, reverse the approach. This is the correct principle. Violating this disrupts Heaven and Earth's order and confuses Yin and Yang. For example, when Yangming Cool Metal governs Heaven, Warm/Hot medicines are appropriate. However, if the Second Qi involves Sovereign and Ministerial Fire, avoid these for 60 days before using them. When Shaoyin Sovereign Fire governs Earth, Cold/Cool medicines are appropriate. But if the Fourth Qi involves Cold Water and Wet Earth, delay Cold/Cool medicines for 60 days. "False manifestations" refer to seasonal temperatures not matching the governing Tian Quan or interstitial Qi; in such cases, treat contrary to the norm. This harmonizes Heaven and Earth Yin/Yang. Violating this disrupts the constants of Tian Quan and the rhythms of interstitial Qi.
The Emperor said: Excellent. What is the administration of Shaoyang?
Qibo replied: This refers to the cycles of Yin-Shen years.
Shaoyang governs Heaven, Tai Jiao (Excessive Wood) governs Yun, Jueyin governs Earth. Ren-Yin and Ren-Shen years.
The Yun is Wind Drumming; Transformation is rustling, chaotic, opening, and splitting; Change is shaking, tearing, destroying, and uprooting. Disease involves tremors, vertigo, rib/flank pain, and fright. Ren represents Excessive Wood Yun. Yin-Shen have Shaoyang governing Heaven and Jueyin governing Earth. The Yun matches Taiyang Tai Jiao, but diseases differ slightly due to Wood combining with Earth/Water (Blood level) or Wind/Fire (Qi level). The Classic states: "All wind, vertigo, and tremors belong to Liver." And: "Eastern Liver Wood, its disease manifests as fright."
Sequence: Tai Jiao (Start/Mid), Shao Zheng, Tai Gong, Shao Shang, Tai Yu (End).
Shaoyang governs Heaven, Tai Zheng (Excessive Fire) governs Yun, Jueyin governs Earth. Wu-Yin and Wu-Shen are Tian Fu (Heavenly Matches).
Wu represents Excessive Fire Yun. When Fire Yun meets Shaoyang Heaven, it is a Tian Fu.
The Yun is Summer Heat; Transformation is warmth, noise, oppression, and mugginess; Change is intense blazing and boiling. Disease involves upper heat stagnation, blood hemorrhage/diarrhea, and heart pain. Fire Yun descending on Shaoyang causes these.
Sequence: Tai Zheng, Shao Gong, Tai Shang, Shao Yu (End), Shao Jiao (Start).
Shaoyang governs Heaven, Tai Gong (Excessive Earth) governs Yun, Jueyin governs Earth. Jia-Yin and Jia-Shen years.
The Yun is Rainy Clouds; Transformation is soft, moist, heavy, and dewy; Change is shocking, drifting, and stormy. Softness is Earth's virtue; Moisture is Dampness transformation. Taiyin arrival brings thunder and fierce winds. Disease involves heavy body, edema, fullness, and fluid retention. This follows Tai Gong Yun affecting the Spleen. Variations in disease among excessive Yun occur due to slight differences in Tian Quan transformations.
Sequence: Tai Gong, Shao Shang, Tai Yu (End), Tai Jiao (Start), Shao Zheng.
Shaoyang governs Heaven, Tai Shang (Excessive Metal) governs Yun, Jueyin governs Earth. Geng-Yin and Geng-Shen years, equivalent to Zheng Shang.
Yearly Metal is excessive, but restrained by Shaoyang Fire, making Metal balanced, similar to Zheng Shang.
The Yun is Coolness; Transformation is mist, dew, clarity, and sharpness. Disease involves shoulder, back, and chest. Lung meridian emerges from the chest; Shu points are on the back.
Sequence: Tai Shang, Shao Yu (End), Shao Jiao (Start), Tai Zheng, Shao Gong.
Shaoyang governs Heaven, Tai Yu (Excessive Water) governs Yun, Jueyin governs Earth. Bing-Yin and Bing-Shen years.
The Yun is Cold and Solemn; Transformation is freezing, grim, and biting; Change is ice, snow, frost, and hail. Disease involves cold-type edema.
Sequence: Tai Yu (End), Tai Jiao (Start), Shao Zheng, Tai Gong, Shao Shang.
In all Shaoyang Heaven administrations, Qi operation precedes time. Yin-Shen years are excessive, so Six Qi arrive early. Heaven Qi is upright. This explains Heaven/Earth Yin/Yang interaction. Cang/Dan/Su/Yuan Qi generate Earth's Five Elements; Earth's Five Elements present Heaven's Six Qi (Cold/Heat/Dry/Damp/Wind/Fire). These are Heaven's Yin/Yang, served by Three Yin/Three Yang. Shaoyang above is governed by Fire, revealing Jueyin. Jueyin above is governed by Wind, revealing Shaoyang. "Heaven Qi is upright" means Shaoyang governs Heaven, and Qi operates in the intersection. With Three Yin/Yang below, Qi descends into the middle. Similarly, Jueyin Earth Qi operates in the middle because Shaoyang is Jueyin's revealed partner. Understanding Tian Quan and interstitial Qi allows one to grasp the subtleties of Yun transformation. Earth Qi disturbs because Jueyin governs Earth. Wind rises violently, trees fall, sand flies (Fire/Wind Qi). Yin moves, Yang transforms, rain falls on time. Jueyin ascends following Shaoyang's transformation. Fire and Wood share virtue, corresponding to Yinghuo (Mars) and Suixing (Jupiter). Grains are Red and Green. Administration is strict; command is disturbing. Wind and Heat mix, clouds boil. Taiyin flows horizontally, cold arrives, cool rain rises. Wind/Heat mixing is Shaoyang/Jueyin interaction. Cloud boiling is Earth Qi rising. Taiyin horizontal flow is vaporization into rain. Jueyin Wind follows Shaoyang Heaven, so Taiyin Damp follows, yielding to control. People suffer from interior Cold, external sores, interior diarrhea/fullness. Sages harmonize without fighting. Reciprocating movements cause cold/heat malaria, diarrhea, deafness, blindness, vomiting, upper oppression/swelling/color change. Wind/Heat outside leads to Cold/Damp inside. Sages harmonize Cold/Heat to prevent internal/external conflict. If they clash, malaria/diarrhea/deafness/vomiting result from Wind/Heat invading interior; upper swelling/color change results from Cold/Damp invading exterior.
First Qi: Earth Qi shifts, Wind wins and shakes, Cold leaves, climate warms greatly, grass/trees bloom early. Cold comes but cannot kill, Warm disease arises. Disease: Qi oppression above, blood overflow, red eyes, cough/wheeze, headache, uterine bleeding, flank fullness, skin sores. Intergitial Qi is Shaoyin Sovereign Fire; Main Qi is Jueyin Wind Wood. Wind warms climate, grass blooms. Shaoyang Heaven + Shaoyin Main Qi prevents Cold from suppressing Fire/Heat. Blood overflow/red eyes/cough/sores are Wind/Fire diseases.
Second Qi: Fire is depressed, white dust rises, clouds gather at rain depot, Wind cannot overcome Damp, rain falls, people recover. Disease: Heat depression above, cough/vomit, sores in middle, chest/flank stiffness, headache, fever, confusion, pus-sores. Guest Qi is Taiyin Wet Earth, depressing Heaven Fire. White dust/clouds are Earth Qi. Jueyin Wind follows Shaoyang but cannot overcome Rain/Damp. Fire/Wind盛 gets Yin/Damp balance, so people recover. Disaster causes heat depression/vomit/confusion/pus-sores due to Yin/Damp outside and Fire inside.
Third Qi: Heaven administration spreads, scorching heat arrives, Shaoyang oversees above, rain stops. Disease: Heat in middle, deafness/blindness, blood overflow, pus-sores, cough/vomit, nasal discharge/bleeding, thirst, sneezing/yawning, throat obstruction, red eyes, sudden death. Heaven Qi oversees Third Phase. Main Qi is also Shaoyang, so heat arrives. Rain stopping is Taiyin horizontal flow. Symptoms result from Wind/Fire Qi. Two Fires intersect, Wind/Heat combine, causing sudden death.
Fourth Qi: Coolness arrives, heat alternates, white dew falls, people are peaceful. Disease: Fullness, heavy body. Interstitial Qi is Yangming Cool Air. Coolness/dew arrive. Shaoyang Fire mixes with Wind/Heat in air intersection, so heat alternates. Wind/Heat year meets Coolness, so people are peaceful. Heavy body/fullness results from Main Time Wet Earth Qi.
Fifth Qi: Yang departs, Cold arrives, rain falls, pores close, hard wood withers early. People avoid Cold, gentlemen are careful. Interstitial Qi is Taiyang Cold Water. Heat leaves, Cold arrives. Autumn/Winter transition brings storage. Pores close. Gentlemen/sages adjust to avoid Cold, preventing severe/exotic diseases.
Final Qi: Earth Qi is upright, Wind arrives, all things regenerate, frost/mist occur. Disease: Incontinence, heart pain, cough due to unhidden Yang. Jueyin Wind Wood governs Final Qi. Earth Qi upright means Jueyin reveals Shaoyang. All things regenerate via generating Qi; Earth Qi rises, frost/mist occur. Storage season acts as generation season. Incontinence/heart pain result from Kidney Qi attacking Heart. Lung governs Qi, Kidney is source. Kidney is root, Lung is branch. Yang stores in Kidney in Winter; now attacks Lung, causing cough.
Suppress Yun Qi, assist the unconquered. Must break depressed Qi, first take the source of transformation. Severe excesses won't arise, exotic diseases won't start. Excessive Yun must be suppressed. Unconquered elements need assistance (e.g., Wood excess suppresses Earth; Fire excess suppresses Metal). Suppress excess, assist deficient. Break depressed Qi (e.g., Geng years: Metal depressed by Shaoyang; Jia years: Earth depressed by Jueyin). Take sources of these Yun. Suppress excess, assist deficient, preventing severe/exotic diseases. "Baokuo" refers to excessive Gong/Shang Yun being depressed, causing severe illness ("Ke").
Therefore, this year favors Salty, Pungent, and Sour flavors. Use draining, purging, soaking, and sweating methods. Salty restrains Shaoyang Fire; Pungent overcomes Wind Wood. Jueyin reveals Shaoyang Fire (Child drains Mother), so Sour tonifies. Soaking uses ancient decoctions for sweating. Draining/purging clears internal Fire/Heat. Soaking/sweating disperses external Wind. Observe Qi temperature to adjust excess. Similar to Wind/Heat, use more Cold transformation; different, use less. Food/drugs follow same rules. Avoid Hot in Hot seasons, Warm in Warm, Cold in Cold, Cool in Cool. Reverse if false. Violating this is the ladder to disease. Master Zhang Yu noted: Taiyang Heaven/Taiyin Earth starts with avoiding Cold/Cool. Shaoyang Heaven/Jueyin Earth starts with avoiding Hot/Warm. Yearly Yun medicine/food should avoid Tian Quan influences. "Avoid" means do not violate.
The Emperor said: Excellent. What is the administration of Taiyin?
Qibo replied: This refers to the cycles of Chou-Wei years.
Taiyin governs Heaven, Shao Jiao (Deficient Wood) governs Yun, Taiyang governs Earth. Qing-Re Sheng-Fu same. Shao Jiao is Deficient Wood, so Clear Qi wins, then Heat復 (revenge). Qing/Re match Yun transformation. Equivalent to Zheng Gong. Ding-Chou and Ding-Wei years. Yun is Wind, Clear, Heat. Wind is Yun, Clear is Winning Qi, Heat is Revenge Qi. Excessive Yun discusses disease; Deficient Yun does not, as Excessive is violent, Deficient is slow.
Sequence: Shao Jiao (Start/Mid), Tai Zheng, Shao Gong, Tai Shang, Shao Yu (End).
Taiyin governs Heaven, Shao Zheng (Deficient Fire) governs Yun, Taiyang governs Earth. Han-Yu Sheng-Fu same. Fire deficiency, Cold wins, Earth Rain復. Gui-Chou and Gui-Wei years. Yun is Heat, Cold, Rain.
Sequence: Shao Zheng, Tai Gong, Shao Shang, Tai Yu (End), Tai Jiao (Start).
Taiyin governs Heaven, Shao Gong (Deficient Earth) governs Yun, Taiyang governs Earth. Feng-Qing Sheng-Fu same. Equivalent to Zheng Gong. Ji-Chou and Ji-Wei are Tai Yi Tian Fu. Earth Yun meets Four Seasons (Sui Hui). Earth Yun meets Taiyin Heaven (Tian Fu). Tian Fu + Sui Hui = Tai Yi Tian Fu. Yun is Rain, Wind, Clear.
Sequence: Shao Gong, Tai Shang, Tai Yu (End), Shao Jiao (Start), Shao Zheng.
Taiyin governs Heaven, Shao Shang (Deficient Metal) governs Yun, Taiyang governs Earth. Re-Han Sheng-Fu same. Yi-Chou and Yi-Wei years. Yun is Cool, Heat, Cold.
Sequence: Shao Shang, Tai Yu (End), Tai Jiao (Start), Shao Zheng, Tai Gong.
Taiyin governs Heaven, Shao Yu (Deficient Water) governs Yun, Taiyang governs Earth. Yu-Feng Sheng-Fu same. Equivalent to Zheng Gong. Xin-Chou and Xin-Wei years. Yun is Cold, Rain, Wind.
Sequence: Shao Yu (End), Shao Jiao (Start), Tai Zheng, Shao Gong, Tai Shang.
In all Taiyin Heaven administrations, Qi operation lags behind time. Yin dominates, Yang retreats. Great winds rise. Heaven Qi descends, Earth Qi ascends. Fields are dim, white dust rises, clouds rush south. Cold rains frequent, crops mature late. People suffer Cold-Damp, abdominal fullness, body swelling,痞逆 (stagnant reversal), cold tetany/tightness. Cold-Damp combine, yellow-black dust dims, circulating in Qi intersection.
